Blu-Ray Series / Movie worth the scratch?

I already own both the complete series and Serenity on DVD. Is there any benefit, other than better sound and audio to buying the Blu-Ray versions? I wasn't sure if there were extra features, etc.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

There is one extra commentary plus a "roundtable" discussion with Joss, Nathan, Alan and Ron on the new Firefly dvds.

As for Serenity Blu-Ray, I'll be getting it tomorrow, and I am sure there are some additional extras on it too, but I can't remember the specifics right now.

Everyone has to make the decision for themselves. If you already have an HD tv, and a Blu-Ray player or a Playstation 3, then I think the extra expense for the new dvds is worth it. If you have to buy all the new hardware then it depends on how much money you have to spend.

The way I look at it, anything I can do to let TPTB know that I still love the show and want more is to continue to support each and every release of the dvds and also buy whatever other merchandise I can afford. Our BDHs deserve it.

What type of tv do you have?

The reason I ask is this: I have a high end CRT Sony television. CRT, and standard dvd were made for each other. When I pop in Firefly the complete series(standard) on that tv, it's looks fantastic.

On the other hand, My HD LCD television makes the standard dvd look like a pile of rubbish. I don't know why but it does look shabby. When I put in the Blu-Ray of Firefly on my LCD it looks amazing.
Playing my standard dvd on the CRT up against the Blu-Ray LCD....the Blu-Ray is a noticeable improvement in the video department.

Sorry if that description is way too confusing, but it's about the best assessment I can give you.

Thanks to you both for the info. I have a fairly decent HD television and received Blu-Ray for Christmas.

The interesting thing I have learned over the years of viewing HD channels is that you stop appreciating it how good things look in 1080P/I , but sure notice how bad standard and even DVD quality looks to you when you try to switch back.

I think I will probably purchase the new Blu-Ray versions for both, but will probably hold off for a few months, so my wife doesn't think I have lost my mind.

Well my family got both a high end Samsung 46" LCD HDTV and a PS3. Firefly comes New Year's Eve. Serenity comes tomorrow at the local F.Y.E. via preorder. I am locked and loaded to watch. Damn but this is gonna be good. Maybe for my sis they'll bring Buffy to Blu-Ray someday but have heard no word on that. Out!

I'm with EC on this one. I'm all for sending TPTB a loud and clear message - WE WANT THE BDS ALREADY!

I went out and bought a 42-inch Philips 1080P and PS3 and it's amazing in both sound and picture quality. Viewing standard DVD you can tell the difference immediately. Although I have noticed a graininess (especially during indoor shots) that comes and goes with almost every frame.

I believe it is because of how FF was originally shot. It did not lend itself to a smooth transition over to Blu-Ray. Fox did just enough to get a new version out to us Browncoats investing as little as possible to make as much as possible. Can't really blame them (free market enterprise and all) but they know that we'll buy whatever to get our heroes back.

i have firefly on blu-ray and it's great ! love the commentaries and the behind the scenes footage...the picture quality is much better,even though i am viewing on a 42in. panasconic rear projection 1080i widescreen...i know that even with 1080p you can still notice ghosting when watching images in motion...if i had $1000 or $1100 i would buy the vizio 42in. 1080p 120hz or any hdtv 1080p 120hz around that price range... the higher the hertz the faster the refresh rate...most hdtv's are 60hz...well, serenity on blu-ray is out TODAY !...noticed that walmart has it online for $21.99 i believe...have no idea which stores may carry it in stock...keep flyin'

First a warning!!

EDIT: Just re-read that ShinyGoodGuy said my first paragraph a couple of posts ago. D'Oh!

If you plan on buying FF on Blu-ray it is worth noting that whilst the transfer is excellent, the original footage was deliberately shot/processed to be grainy and sometimes soft focus.
So there is more noticable grain some of the time at the higher resolution.
It's a bit like the older movies going to DVD, there's only so much quality you can get out of it. Brand new movies on DVD looked miles better than older ones and the same applies to Blu-ray.
I have T2 and it is great but there is grain. The Dark Knight on the other hand is simply superb, but then T2 is nearly 20 years old now.

Having said that the buy is still worth it if you have the kit. It does look shinier. I wouldn't say the extra extras on their own are worth it compared to the DVD but the episodes still look fantastic.

Oddly enough I upgraded my whole set up a few weeks before Xmas (at a rather substantial but worth it cost) and I always told myself that it would be because of FF on Blu-ray. In actual fact it was The Dark Knight that persuaded me but FF did make me get a modded Blu-ray player to play all regions, only to import the series and find that it was already multi-region anyway.
So any UK folks out there thinking of getting it then it will play on your Blu-ray/PS3 player.
