Firefly Obsession - Guilty Secret?
Sunday, May 31, 2009

I'm wondering what other people's family/friends make of their Firefly obsession and/or how (well) you manage to hide it . . .

I've sent you an FFF message but they don't always get to their destination, so I wanted to post here to give you an encouraging little nudge to write. WRITE!

I'm coming out of lurkdom.

My friends and family know I'm a sci-fi nerd, have been since my first episode of Star Trek TNG... so they accept my Firefly/BDM obsession as par for the course.

The fact that I read (and long to write but am too chicken) fanfic? That's my own dirty little secret.

No one in my family really appreciates Firefly or the BDM the same way I do. My mom, who was the closest to me in interests though "Serenity" was an entertaining film but didn't see the reason for my obsessions. My brother liked what he saw but it doesn't stir him really. And my dad's not really into sci-fi or fantasy less it's in an Indiana Jones or Dirk Pitt kind of setting.

Friends ar better though...if I can count all the people who hang out here as friends ;D

I hide it from people I first meet...I give them a couple days but then something slips in and I start to squee about some obscure reference and they finds out. Everyone has been pretty good about it though and I've managed to convert a lot of people.

If they can't accept it, then they aren't a good friend!

I embrace it too. I have found the best friends among BC's and proudly tried to convert almost everyone at work. Alas, with little success.

Perhaps I should put this into personal context. Seems you and I have something in common here, Bytemite: my mum reads 19th century classics for fun, my dad has been known to spend Christmas day with his head buried in a book about the commandant of Treblinka, my brother directs avant-garde opera, my sister didn't even own a television until a couple of years ago...Anyway for fun?

I have to hide it. My family doesn't approve of fantasy or sci-fi. Or imagination. They think it's a waste of time.

They know Firefly is a show I like, but beyond that, I'm careful to keep every part of it secret from them, as well as my fan work. They might try to take me back to the psychiatrists.

It also helps that they have absolutely no interest in it.

Hide it? Why would I want to?

I have converted a few friends, but the only family member to embrace it is my son. All the rest think of me as a hopeless SF fanboy, they can't realize that Firefly is in a class by itself.
