I Say A Little Prayer

By AgentOmega

Book: “I don’t think the captain would much like me praying for him.”

Inara: “Don’t tell him. I never do.”

- Excerpt, “The Train Job”

It is her own private ritual; not so ancient as the tea ceremony, but important nevertheless.

She never tells him, for he would despise the effort if he knew.

Closing the door to her shuttle, she kneels at her altar, lighting a stick of incense.

As the smoke curls upwards, she silently repeats the familiar litany.

Merciful Buddha, watch over him.

Lend him light, that he may see the path before him in the dark places where he must walk.

Lend him strength, that he may overcome the obstacles he must face in his trials.

Lend him wisdom, that he may know the hearts and minds of strangers.

Free him from fear, from confusion, and from doubt.

Protect him from evils that wear the face of man and the dress of civility.

Leaving the incense to smolder, she rises and makes her way to the door.

Upon the threshold, she pauses; casting one final glance to her altar, she concludes her unsolicited prayer.

Bring him safely back to me once more.

Beautiful.

But I'm a might concerned that your pieces are getting shorter not longer. I'm all for some poignant and well crafted fic (which this certainly is), but I'm also a big fan of long, drawn-out fic too, which I'm really hoping you'll share with us ... please?!?!?

But I love this - I think it is the most perfect prayer for Inara!

I can so imagine Inara doing so and it fits in so well with her comment to Book about praying for the Captain. Ali D :~)

I have to agree with everyone here. This is perfect characterization. But in accord with Tamsibling, please write longer pieces! You have real talent!

It was very lovely. And I agree with everyone else about longer fics. We are a GREEDY bunch, aren't we? =D LOL

Thanks for the wonderful comments, everyone.

Well, we're approaching the bottom of the proverbial barrel... the 'completed ficlets' barrel, that is - you didn't REALLY think I was writing them that fast, did you?

Anyway, for those who have... 'made note'... of the lack of length so far, you'll be glad to hear that several longer fics are in the works.

However, these works range from partially to mostly complete, so it might be a while before any of them are posted - but rest assured, they'll be finished eventually.

In the meantime, there's one more ficlet I haven't posted - stay tuned for "Phoenix", my very first erotica.

As always, thanks for reading and reviewing.
