"It was important that people understand that the movie isn't the series. The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series." - Joss Whedon

'We will have to see if the FOX ordered second pilot will be better or worse but while I didn't think this was great, it was good enough that I will check it out on FOX (still, though, Dark Angel didn't need to be cancelled for this).'

'You may need to watch it more than once - I hate to say it, but Fox had a point - not much of one, I'll admit, but "Serenity" is possibly just that tiny bit too subtle for some people. Then again, who cares? Spoilers included; sorry.'

Below are point of analysis for the episode.  These analysis should be objective and based on facts within this episode or other episodes of the series.

Below are unanswered questions from the episode.
Will the Alliance discover Lawrence the Law-man's body on Whitehall?
Simon was contacted by an underground group about rescuing his sister, River. What is the name of this underground group and what is their purpose?
What is River's IQ?
When was the Serenity built?
When did they (show) this episode? and how did you people hear/see this?
Where did Book get the fresh strawberries from to bribe/pay Kaylee to ride Serenity?
many reviewers, on Amazon.com, make mention of 15 episodes. i only see 14 listed on this site. am i correct in assuming that the 2 part Serenity episode makes Firefly 15 hours, rather than 15 episodes? either way, i have placed my order. thanks for your time.
about the strawberries, the assumption is that he brought them from the abbey, just like the other vegetables that he donates to the crew as part of his fare.
What was Inara holding in the box when she heard about the Reavers? (not a suicide kit)
Joss mentions that a type of fusion power is what drives ships of the future and specifically Serenity. Since an H-bomb is uncontrolled fusion, did the crew basically expose an area of Whitefall to the equivilant of a nuke strike when they went for full burn in the atmosphere?
glowyrm loves all this stuff... but big headache cause i dont get most of it?!? am i so clueless that i should look at "official" sites? i find so much more intelegence in the fan sites... i just want to know how much ive missed!!! :crap: last week i discovered firefly, but only the last 2/3rds of the episode i think.(i was coming out of hibernation) a girl woke up, a guy got scared spitless and there was a mention of reivers "...rape you to death, eat your flesh and sew your skin into their clothes, just pray its in that order" or words to that effect. :banghead: DONT WANT TO BE SO CLUELESS!!!
/spoiler Anyone have any idea who is gonna pilot now if they make another series or movie?
This might be a strange question but for the preacher to know so much about everything what did he do in the past ? I remember once he gave the alliance his Id and they gave him good fast service when he got shot just wonderin thx. JAY
where/how can i find out the translations of the mandarin (sp?) in each eppisode?.. R

Below are speculations about events or items in the episode.  These speculations are subjective.
Because the series is influenced partially by the Chinese culture, where Monk's practices Kung Fu as a form of excercise and for self-defence, Book could be more than a simple preacher by the way he handles himself.
Someone asked when Serenity was built. Well when Kaylee and Book talk about sailing in a Firefly he says "long before you were crawling, but not an aught three, didn't have the extendors, tended to shake" Aught three could be '03 the year of manufacture.
Has anyone ever wondered whether Jane actually goes to the second hill before the ambush? Now I like Jane, I even *trust* him. Trust him to be Jane anyway. And we assume that we only see him take out one bad dude because of edit time. But, well, wouldn't that be amusing?
i have three things to say: did u notice when wash did the crazy ivan, when it did the shot of the engine, i noticed that the engine turned back to the right way round, and the second time we looked at the engine, the engine turned backwards. and afterwards, notice that wash, wasnt actually holding the joystick, hes holding nothing. And lastly, on persephony, when wash was coming out the hanger on the mule, u saw someone moving out the shot in the hanger, plus a hand pulling the mule away after wash said something to zoe in chinese, did u see it? i thought it was hilarious.
Did anyone else notice that Mal kisses a cross necklace before he goes "duck huntin'" in the opening sequence? Could definately explain his vehement distaste for religion in the later episodes: God failed him.

Below are notes about events or items in the episode.
The phrase "Aiyah" was used a couple of times by member of the crew. This Chinese phrase, while not really a word, is used to show displeasure about something. Kind of like saying dammit.
The ship's name, Serenity, was named after The Battle of Serenity--a devestating and decisive battle on Hera between the Indendent Faction and the Alliance. Many died or were left to die on the battlefield, never to leave. It is said "Once you've been in Serenity, you never leave. You just learn to live there."
In serenity a number of Firefly-verse phrases are used, here are a number of them:

Humped - to be in trouble.
"We're Humped!"

Boil - used to describe the process the crew use to open a sealed ship.
"... gunna Boil it..."

Shiney - analogus to good, or in a good situation.
"We look shiney."

Gor'am - Corruption of 'God damn'.
"The Gor'am law."

Back birth - similar to an idiot or a fool.
"Do you think I'm some kind of a back birth?"
When they blow an opening in the side of the derelict, a little-known scientific fact is demonstrated: sound does not travel through a vacuum.
I respectfully submit that the phrase is "back berth," not back birth. Low class idiots get the worst accomodation on a ship.
Note that they turn on the ship's/cargo hold's artificial gravity once they're back aboard with the illegal salvage, and everything drops. As mentioned elsewhere, it's difficult to reconcile this with the fact that the gravity stays on when the ship has lost power in "out of gas".
As I understand it, back birth refers a birth defect (any birth defect).
Guantes- you forgot the term 'verse as a corruption of universe. "Ain't a power in the 'verse can stop Kaylee from being cheerful" You could also add the word "Atmo" as short for atmosphere. "Full burn in atmo? Won't that cause a blowback and burn us out?"

The gravity becomes active when they close the exterior door to the airlock; that's the large ramp-like door that you see open when they're moving equipment on and off ship. In Out of Gas, Mal is on the cargo hold side of the interior airlock doors (the sliding doors). It appears that gravity is always active on the cargo side of the airlock but if the exterior doors are open in zero-grav, there's no gravity in the airlock itself. Not knowing enough about the tech, I can't say how the gravity would remain active in a complete power failure. It's possible that gravity is a completely self-contained system, seperate from all other ship's systems and not affected by them.
the bit that spins round on the outside of the ship-you see it behind the bridge i think-is what creates the gravity. this is based on sci fact. the "wheel" needs to turn to create the grav. im assuming that if the engine dont turn neither does the wheel.
To modify Guantes's definitions slightly:

I believe that "humped" is actually f***ed. I might be wrong.
