"Shingdig" is clearly an anjoyable episode. ' - Poetic4U | RATING: 9.00 READ: 8649 COMMENTS: 2953 '“Shindig” is the Gone With the Wind of Firefly episodes. It is actually a refreshing change in scenery after the poverty we have seen in other episodes.
' - GThing | RATING: 9.00 READ: 7526 COMMENTS: 1601 'Not as "heavy" as some of the other episodes, "Shindig" focuses more on character interaction, especially between Inara and Mal, and Zoe and Wash; than action.' - Captain | RATING: 9.00 READ: 12430 COMMENTS: 8084 'By putting plot and characters first, "Firefly" shows it's strength.' - InvisibleGreen | RATING: 8.00 READ: 19945 COMMENTS: 1609 'Another good episode with good acting all around. Nothin wrong with a few barfights, a woman selling herself, and some fencing on a Friday night before you go out.' - Aftathott | RATING: 8.00 READ: 6766 COMMENTS: 8178 'Mal earns the honor of being the star of his own shamelessly gushing series!' - QueenTiye | RATING: 10.00 READ: 6259 COMMENTS: 14300 'This episode is hilarious. Also very revealing into the character of Inara and the relationship between her and Mal. I'd like to see more off her. the episode. |
How does Mal know the steps to the dance at the ball?
about the dancing, mal doesn't really know all the steps. later, he stumbles and says something about it not really being his kind of party before atherton comes in an takes inara away.
What was the name of the song being played at the ball?
The song played at the ball is Franz Joseph Haydn's Quartet in D major, "The Lark." I didn't recognize it the first time I watched it, but my quartet played the piece last year, and I was pretty excited when I realized what it was the next time I saw the episode.

So, River's zany new accent. We've seen her getting glimpses of the future and the present, but this is the first time we've seen her get inside someone's head. She seems to skim Badger's mind for information about his life, and even becomes him temporarily to a certain extent, assuming his accent. River's accent is usually very neutral, so this may well be an audible cue in future episodes as to when she's skimming someone's mind - just keep an ear out for her switching accents and using words she normally wouldn't use...

Atherton Wing might not let Mal get away with his seeming victory over him. Maybe A.W. will send someone after Mal or even Inara.
Or maybe she just guessed, based on his appearance and attitude.

In the first couple of seconds of the scene where the crew is walking through the streets of Persephone, you can see a ship that looks suspiciously like the Starlight Intruder (from the Dark Empire comic miniseries). Looks like one of the computer animators decided to give Star Wars fans a little treat.

Anybody notice how most of the writing in the city appears to be Chinese? This happens in 'ariel', too, and elsewhere on this site there are translations of things people in the show say in Chinese. Refreshing break from the other space operas' need to create new languages (i. e. Klingon. There are people who have actually learned to speak it, and I pity them. Those are the sort of people who read through ALL of the appendix to Lord of the Rings and use Tolkein's calendar.)

It's interesting that slavery is legal in the Alliance, while (to judge by Mal's reaction to the slavers in the opening bar scene) the Independants can be assumed to have been against it. So much for the claim that Firefly glamourizes the Confederacy...

The overhead shot of the location where the ball is taking place is Boston's Faneuil Hall. It's three long thing buidlings and the center one has a dome on it. Shiny little tidbit for ya!

Rocketjock- I too noticed that slavery seems legal from the pool table conversation with the slaver. It was proposed to me that Joss intended a small part of the unification war to be fought over the issue of slavery, but with roles reversed. In this case the alliance(union) supports slavery and the Independance(confederacy) rejects it. Likely also that slaver abuses rendered against rim worlds, along with other things, led to the independance movement.

On the subject of why there is so much Chinese cultlure in the 'verse, Whedon explained in his commentaries that [China] and [America] were the two major powers that formed the Alliance. Seems to fit that there should be some Chinese culture in the 'verse. Dong ma?
