'I liked Early. Thought he was a quirky villan. No Niska, but really, who is? This episode just proves that Firefly gets better with each airing. I think this may be why FOX cancelled it, they just couldn't handle the potential.'

'Since the beginning, River has been a complicated mystery. On the surface you see a very troubled girl. Often dissoriented, withdrawn, and seemingly confused, she is trully disturbed. Every once in a while though, she would say something that reveals the remarkable brilliance that underlies the insanity. This episode helped me decide that River was my favorite character. (There are spoilers in here, so be warned)'

Below are unanswered questions from the episode.
I heard somewhere that the show has been cancelled. Does anyone know what the immediate future for Fox’s Firefly???
Did it bother anyone else who had seen the aired verson of this episode that they decided to excise that scene with River & the stick/gun? I liked it in the episode & now it ruins the flow to have to watch it separately.
I was confused over the bit where Early and Simon go to search the shuttles. When they come out of the first one (at least I think that's where they're coming out from), Early says something like, "Man, her room ain't telling me nothing." (Can't remember the exact quote). Is he still talking about River's room at this point? He's not talking about Inara because he hasn't been to her shuttle yet. If so, I don't get it -- they just came out of the shuttle, and they're nowhere near River's room! Or is is just another case of Early being really weird? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
So, exactly how does the gun get to the cargo hold?

Below are speculations about events or items in the episode.  These speculations are subjective.
Book really isn't a Shepheard. The bounty hunter said so, and while this shouldn't have any relavence whatsoever, it does because I also think that that bounty hunter suffers a bit from what River suffers from. He was hearing things like she did at the beginning and he over-thought things. Also, he was a pretty good bounty hunter. Saw Simon coming though his back was turned, like River saw all those men with her eyes closed in "War Stories". And we know that River is more than a bit psychic. It was obvious when she knew the fire was coming before it happened in "Out of Gas". But also, in "Safe", when Book gets shot they have to take him to an Alliance base to get him fixed and they were given shit until Book showed them his card and then it was all good.. but it wasn't because he's a Shepheard and they dont' tell us why.. and then like.. he's got this awesome firepower and knowledge of arms in general in "War Stories". And he's always pumping it up. A precher dun need muscles. What is he?
River sees innocence and life in inanimate objects (e.g. the gun and the tree branch). At the same time, she sees hidden guilt in people.
Maybe Jubal Early survived. We didn't see where the ship went to - only that it flew off screen once River jumped back to Serenity. Perhaps Jubal's last line was a call for his ship to pick him up.
continuing my nanotech speculation from "ariel" ... i realize this doesn't explain everything, but it seems to fit with Joss's relative interest in scientific accuracy on Firefly (psychic power would fit in the buffyverse, but seems out of place here). if nanotech has been used to widely infest the human population, maybe it allows River to gain access to other people's thoughts (but it doesn't explain how she predicted the fire in Out Of Gas).
I would suspect that in the setting psychic ability is possible. The crews willingness to accept this as an option shows that they are exposed to the idea more than we are. Also both Janye and a small community refer to the ability as Witchcraft. Implying that it is common (or rare) enough to spark superstition and fear. Maybe the ability only occurs in rare few mentally unstable individuals. Perhaps River was an attempt to create a stable/reliable psychic by the Bluegloves.
devalis - my theory was that shepard served in the alliance as some sort of high-level law enforcement or security service. it would explain his treatment at the hospital, expertise with weapons and familiarity with criminal enterprises like the web. my guess was that he participated in some atrocity and, feeling a decent amount of remorse over it, resigned his position and went wandering as a priest in pennance. i should note this theory is based on basically watching the series out of order and incompletely - still haven't seen disc one or finished the second.
I don't think that River *did* predict the fire. I think she merely sensed it. The drive "burped" before she said anything, when the catalyzer failed, and the fire likely started at that point. Kaylee says she'll check the engine, River says "fire", and a couple seconds later, the explosion occurs. I believe she was sensing the the pre-explosion fire. River can definitely "read" minds - witness what she pulled from Early and also the little girl in "Safe". Maybe they put some kind of electromagnetic antenna in her brain (a la "squids" from the book Johnny Mnemonic) which allows her to read the tiny emissions given off by people's neurons. If that's the case, then no wonder she's crazy - all the electronics on the ship would be talking to her and motors could be escpecially painful. There's a lot of hard science to support mind reading and extrasensory perception (in the strict sense of the term) but not (IMO) to support precognition. YMMV.
I'm not convinced Book *is* Alliance. The ident card could be a strong signal that he's Alliance. Then again, it could be an indication of something else entirely. (I'm not sure what, but this is Joss and he often comes up with things I never think of.) It sounded to me like Book's knowledge of Shan Yu was because he is well-read rather than well-versed in torture. The rest of it - his knowledge of martial arts, firearms and crime - might as easily be relics of a criminal past as an Alliance one. Of course, I'm not sure it's as simple as that, either...
Udjibborn- Yes, Book was most certainly alliance in a previous profession. Most likely either law enforcement or army. The following evidence points to it: 1. His identity card gained him access to the Alliance crusier hospital. 2. Early's comment "That ain't a shepard". 3. Book's ease of handling weapons in War Stories and how quickly he took out the fed in the pilot episode. 4. His knowledge that the cop chasing after Tracy in the episode Message got his command stripes from the "Silverhold Colonies" and was "6 sectors from his jurisdiction" 5. Book's knowledge of scrapper methods and how the web worked in Our Mrs. Renyolds 6. His knowledge of the Chinese dictator Shan Yu and of torture philosophies at the beginning War Stories. When you consider it all at once you see a picture painted of an important military Alliance figure. We also know that his career was so important he had no time for a family because in the pilot he says 2 things: "I never married" and "I'm not a grandpa". We of course assumed at the time that he's unmarried because he's a godly man, but I believe now that Joss had a deeper meaning intentioned there. Finally, I think that Book committed an atrocity in his profession that he couldn't live with. This drove him away from his career and into a shepards live in an attempt to atone. Perhaps his guilt stems from acts committed against independence soldiers or sympathizers during the war and he's spent the last 7 years as a secluded shepard in shame. It would be interesting indeed if you considered Mal and Zoe's reactions if they learned Book's past involved abuses rendered on Independence citizens or soldiers. Finally, Book admits he was gone for awhile when he says to Kaylee "I've been out of the world for a spell. I'd like to walk it awhile" In summary, Book's past is surely dark indeed.
Regarding River's visions in this episode. It has been proposed to me that River is not reading surface thoughts of characters but is rather getting glimpses into the pasts and futures of them. For example Jayne's comment "I got stupid, the money was too good" is what he says when he's trapped in the airlock in the episode Ariel. Simon's comment "I would be there right now" is what he says to kaylee after the meeting in the dinning area just before they try to kiss and are interupted by book. Book's comment is mysterous but is yet more evidence in my theory that he has a dark past. Inara's comment is evidence in my theory that she is on serenity because she is terminal (dying), or rather it was quote from the exact moment she was learning this fact on her homeworld of Sihnon. Mal's comment is the final one...and it's mostly a mystery, but you can be sure that my friends and I will be watching VERY CLOSLY when the movie airs for either Book or Mal to say out loud what they say to River in Objects in Space.
"I'm a big girl, just tell me", this is Inara's comment to River in Objects in Space. It seemed really quirky to me when I first watched the episode and I was naturally confused. But as I mentioned in a previous post, I believe the answer lies in Inara's past and why she's even on Serenity to begin with. We know from the episode Heart of Gold that Inara's leaving of Sihnon came as a shock based on what Nadie says. "She could have been house priestess in a few years time". Why would Inara ever leave that? We also know that she didn't want to leave either. Evidence from the pilot episode points to this. After she describes how wonderful sihnon is her client in the pilot says "I can't imagine ever leaving" then (watch closely) as soon as he says this we "hear" her speak again but we "see" her look away in regret. I believe that was a typical Joss storytelling device to tell us one thing, she never wanted to go. In the commentary for Out of Gas we learn that in a scene between Simon and Inara a secret regarding Inara is revealed. That secret is the moment when she says "I don't want to die", although she says this in response to Simon's conversation about running out of air, she looks away as she says it...she's speaking on 2 levels. Finally in the flashback to when Inara first rented the shuttle from Mal we see that Mal intuituvely senses that Inara's hiding something and really can't believe that a high-society companion would ship out on serenity. Inara certainly isn't forthcoming as to why. I'm not sure but I think the injection needle from the pilot that Inara owns is in some way connected to this story arc but I cannot prove it, I only know that it is NOT a suicide device because that's what Joss tells us in the Pilot's commentary. So there you have it. The evidence points to a speculation that Inara: 1.is terminal with something 2. does not want to die 3. Left Sihnon against her will.
In an episode of the TV series Dark Angel (can't remember which one) they introduced a character from a section of Manticore called Psi-Ops, and the guy was not only able to make the most intricate predictions into the future by calculating statistical chances of one event occuring as opposed to another. But he was also able to very minorly read peoples minds by taking into account even the slightest shift in their body language. Maybe that's the deal with River, as somebody said Psychic powers don't seem to feel right in this world when compared to something like Buffy. Maybe she's just really, really, really smart
My speculation is on Inara's comment "I'm a big girl, just tell me." I thought she was talking about her and Mal's feelings for one another. I think it's something she would've said in a later episode. Ah! But Fox cancelled it! (so not cool guys) I think she knows Mal likes her in that way and things would've finally come to a point where she just demanded that Mal tell her how he felt. But the whole "Inara's terminal" thing is pretty interesting...
I don't think that Inara is terminal as in a previous ep she had to go for a complete medical exam which the guild requires all companions to do yearly.
Inara's quote, "I'm a big girl, just tell me," I thought referenced Mal's having slept with her friend In Heart of Gold.
actually, even tho this is third from the bottom of the epsiode list this is the last episode of the series, the message was filmed last, so the peice of music at the end of the message is saying goodbye to the series, not tracy
However, when Inara is asked about her yearly physical, she replies, "Same as last year," which could just as easily mean "I'm still dying" as "I'm still healthy." Interesting theory...
I dont think Inara is terminal. I think that it was a good idea that the thougts that River was reading were from the past and Inaras was pertaining to the episode Hart of Gold. Dont look for Mal's coment to be in the movie its a refernce to how what he was thinking in the pilot as he watched the Aliance ships decend on Serinity valley.
I don't think Inara is terminal. I think it is simpler than that. She fell in love. Perhaps not with a client, but with someone. If with a client, he left and broker her heart. If not with a client, then this person couldn't handle her job and broke her heart. A life realized without love would make people do strange things, like run away. It would emulate many of the same "effects" as being terminal though. She'd want to run away. She'd want to avoid contact with people. Avoid relationships. What better way to not fall in love than to go somewhere you'd never expect to find it: the ship of a a bunch of crooks. She thought she was playing it safe. The big problem is why she left and took the lifestyle she has. Being terminal doesn't really answer that. She could have what she had till she died. Being in love with someone who doesn't love you back would make you distance yourself from them, hence, she leaves and goes to Serenity.
I think stonicus is right, Inara isn't terminal. She did fall in love, and that's the reason she left. I think she's on Serenity for the same reason everyone else is still on there, they're looking for a purpose and some excitement. Just look at the episode Trash, Inara's the one who gets the Lassiter out of the dumpster full well knowing she could have got shot. In Our Mrs. Reynolds she gets annoyed at Mal for getting 'married' to Saffron. Then in Heart Of Gold when Nadie gets shot Mal doesn't go after the guy for Nadie he does it after looking at Inara, and I doubt he'd have looked to Inara if he was going just to revenge Nadie. // I think Inara saying "I'm a big girl, just tell me" to River was what she was thinking at the time to do with Mal. There's too much history for it not to be. Also River already knows Jayne turned them in, I think Jayne saying "I got stupid, the money was too good" was what he was thinking in the back of his mind when River was in the room, like with Inara. Simon says "I would be there right now" as he talks about being back home. Book says "I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not - So where does that put you?" as he's talking to Jayne about being a Shepherd, possibly making him rethink why he became one linking in with the Book bad past theory. As she looks at Wash and Zoe the subtitles say [Waves Crashing] and then River starts to shudder, as Wash and Zoe are presumably bumping uglies. It also does the intimate frame jump focused on River, like they do in the other sex scenes through the show. // Then back to Inara, look at the conversation before. She's stuttering 'I could... I just don't want to draw this out' (maybe I could stay?) then 'I... No.' (maybe I love you?). 'I appreciate you not saying anything.' - Mal 'Well, I don't, So make up your mind.' Then it's the lines, Inara 'I'm a big girl. Just tell me', Mal 'None of it means a damn thing.' He wants her to stay and she wants to say she loves him, but by the situation in the film I'm guessing she doesn't and Mal's hardass approach gets Kaylee thinking he drove her away. // Kind of long, but there's my take on it all.
this episode begins with the camera coming from space thru the canals of the ship to river when she wakes up suddenly . i think she senses another presence ( jubal ) and immedietley walks around the ship to find this person . jubal early has a love of weapons/guns. wich is why she finds herself holding a gun . she spends alot of time listening wich is why when jubal gets on board . she is already miles ahead of him . she can feel his thoughts so when jubal gets a hold of simon is when she really tries to meddle with his mind (i.e his confusion ) i think this episode is a statement to river's mind reading and how it is not perfect it can confuse her as much as anyone
Now that Serenity has come out, what do you think the chances are of Book being a former Operative?
i'm so annoyed that shepherd's true past is never revealed. obviously he isn't really a shepherd - there's too much evidence to point otherwise. why did he have such high levels of clearance with the alliance? why does he need to work out with jayne? why is he so knowledgeable about firearms? early obviously knew why, but i guess we won't. also, i'm not sure where all this "inara is terminal" speculation is coming from. it's pretty apparent that her and mal love each other, and that would interfere with her profession as a Companion, which is why she ended up leaving (as we can see in Serenity).
New to this site but I like what I see from all standpoints. I came very late to the party as I just recently first bought the movie and then the series. Anger is my chief emotion when I think of what could have been... sigh! I have been reading the fan speculations with a lot of apperciation for how much of my own observations are already a part of discussion. Here are some of my own thoughts. First the ones that have been hashed out. Inara: I definitely lean towards the terminal theory. One thing not mentioned is Inara's line about "never wanting to leave" at the end of Heart of Gold. I think this supports the terminal idea. Also too the "what is in the black box" question can tie into it. My thought is that it could be a poison that would have killed the reavers if they ate her first and she would have deliberately sacrificed herself to save the others. Grim thought but this show is full of them. Most of my other reasons for thinking Inara is terminal have been pointed out by others. Sheppherd Book: I think that his "inner comment" in OJIS paints a pretty bleak inner landscape for a "man of god". I dont have much to add that hasn't already been said on Book. One last thought that I haven't seen is my belief that Simon and River's father is a villain and he knew full well what River's fate was. I suspect that it was planned for future seasons for Simon to clash with him again.

Below are notes about events or items in the episode.
Jubal Early was also the name of a Confederate General in the American Civil War
Jubal Early is actually a Confederate General who performed his job poorly in the battle of Gettysburg. This is the story related by the book 'The Fighting Angels' which is the book that Joss Whedon insists was the sole inspiration for Firefly.
The book is actually "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara. It is probably the only thing I really enjoyed reading in school.
This is really the 'last' episode, the order here isn't as it is on the DVD (which is the 'real' order)
Jubal Early was a Conferate general in the civil war that is an ancester to Nathan Fillion (Captin Mal Reynolds).
Summer Glau is a ballerina. Joss Whedon met her while she did an episode of Angel. "Waiting in the Wing". Summer played the Prima Ballerina. That is why they focus on her feet alot.
We learn in this episode that Jayne's best weapon "Vera" could possibly pierce the hull.
