So Chris, what was the final verdict? Did I miss it? Season 5 vs. season 1?

For me, Season 5 hands down. It had a bunch of cheesy episodes, just like all other seasons. But the inner struggles of Angel was brilliantly written. There's the struggle between hope of redemption and humanity (notice how that comes to the same thing) and doubt of his destiny and finally, deliberate resignation of all he's ever hoped for. There is the struggle between doing what's easy (helping the helpless, one at a time, with no moral quandaries and clearly defined boundaries) and taking risks to do what matters (working side by side with evil to take out a larger chunk of it). There is surviving the pain of the loss of Cordelia, and finding the strength to keep on going. These are themes that I put on par with Firefly, where the verse isn't so black and white, good and evil. That is obviously a big motif in Jossverse, but it seems more eloquently developed in Firefly and Angel Season 5.

That is not to belittle Season 1. I loved it enough halfway through to buy the entire collection, sight unseen.

For me it's close...
1 had the newness, the eps w/Buffy and Faith, the 'Batman' vibe...
5 had all that you mentioned, plus Andrew a Watcher-type!!??!!
And the insane slayer creeped me the out!
It (S5) was the more powerful of the two...
But losing *that character* to a demon seemed like a gimmick...YOU DON'T JUST DESTROY A SOUL!!!

A Bloody Tie Chrisisall!

Joss is ruthless and perverse that way. I think he likes ripping people's hearts out.

And apparently, we like having our hearts ripped out.

He'll probably be the first director to ever kill a child and a puppy in a major motion picture, and have people come back for more.

I doubt it, I heard he just came back from Africa, all bloody and beaten, muttering "I got it back...I got it back..."

He'll be nicer now Chrisisall

Awww... just because a several-million-year-old demon says so doesn't mean it's true. If there was a season 6, one of the major storylines was whether *that character* could really be gone or not, or if *that character* was just kind of being hidden inside of that demon. Don't you think that demon has a lot to lose if it told the truth?

And that, once again, is why cancellation sucks.

Whether you like season 5 or not (and I do) just watching it all the way through simply to see the two final episodes will make it worth it.

And yes, in the beginning it's slow, goofy, and weird. So don't be turned off until the show really gets into the meat of the story. I made that mistake when the show aired on TV, I watched the first few episodes and lost interest...and stopped watching. Since I bought the season on DVD I've been kicking myself.
