Highlights of this ep:

- finally figuring out what the deal was with the mail room guy with the wrestling mask in the background for several eps

- "El Diablo Robotico"

- did anyone catch a vague reference to Firefly when Spike said, "If wishes were horses.."?

*spoilers*

Yes! When Spike said "If wishes were horses" I started laughing and everyone around me had no idea what was so funny. I'm just like "we'd all be eating steak!" Where did this saying come from? Is it an old saying? I've never heard it before Firefly.

Hey, how come Wes doesn't get it when Spike is trying to explain to him that the shanshu thing could be about him. He seems to take it into account, but never actually attempts to put the pieces together.

I thought the Connor reference was rather heartbreaking. I'd completely forgotten that Wes doesn't remember him. I gasped when Angel started saying all that mean stuff that would have reminded Wes of his betrayel b/c it would have hurt his feelings, but then Wes is just like, "What are you talkig about?"

HJERMSTED

I really enjoyed the Mexican Wrestling "Justice League" and would love to see more of their exploits somehow. It was also nice to see something Latin in nature happening in Angel's Los Angeles.

Spike's presence is annoying me. The two vampires with a soul dynamic is nowhere near as interesting as the vampire/slayer dynamic is. Or maybe that long leather coat is getting old... I don't know (the other actors at least get wardrobe changes).

I've been an Angel fan from the beginning and (aside from the higher ratings the show is now enjoying) don't understand what Spike is doing on a show that already has so many great characters.

I think a Faith & Spike series, or even Slayer School, would serve the Spike character better than cramming him into an already excellent show.

But this is about Angel 5.6... all-in-all another entertaining episode that held up well against the afterglow of Angel 5.5 -- which may have been the best episode of Angel ever.

Look at it this way- if James Marsters HADN'T come on Angel, there probably wouldn't have been a season 5. Apparently that's what talked WB into renewing it.

Well it is true that "if wishes were horses" is a rather common phrase, tho I'm wondering where the origin came from. I mean it's a book by Anne McCaffrey, Bryan Adams lyrics, even a Star Trek episode name.

The second Spike said that, my wife, sitting next to me blurted out, "We'd all be eating steak!"

We both laughed. Damn when is Dec 9 getting here?

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"

I agree, Mattro. Wow, Angel 5.5 was so incredible. So dark, so unpredictable.

And above all, so heart-wrenching!!!

I wish they could somehow go back to that level of depravity!!!!

But all the "new viewers" wouldn't know what the hell was going on.

I also miss Connor. In him was such potential for story-arc heaven. I felt that the ending of 5.5 was weird, and this whole season still feels weird to me.

But as for the Numero Cinco ep, I was not so thrilled until they went over the top in the "superhero" mode (comic-book style) and then the ending just blew me away, when I wasn't expecting it at all.

Classic Angel fashion, I should add.

So that was very refreshing.

It reminded me of the "Alien baseball player" episode on the X-files which was written and directed by Duchovny. At first I thought it was the stupidest thing I'd ever seen, but by the end I was laughing and crying at the same time. It was priceless, but not in a Mastercard kind of way.

Numero Cinco wasn't such a "home run" but definitely had that "sneak up and kick you in the ass when you weren't paying attention" thing going for it.

Have a great weekend ya'll...

Ma

Ok, well the original saying is that "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." It was Jayne's totally off-kilter, "we'd be eating steak" that made it funny.

Yes, the "If wishes were horses..." phrase is very very old. Spike saying it was NOT a reference to the Firefly episode.

As for Spike being annoying, I certainly wouldn't be watching it if they hadn't brought him on board. I'd stopped watching half-way through last season because it had so many "idiot plots". (An "idiot plot" is a plot that cannot exist unless every character is dumber than the viewer/reader and can't figure out what's going on while the viewer/reader can)

I know I'm beyond late chiming in on this posting, but I really hated this particular episode. We have now been in southern California for seven 1/2 years (Buffy & Angel years) and we're JUST NOW getting a story about Mexicans? That would be as bad as having a sit-com set in San Fransisco with no Asians. Oh wait...TV did have one of those. heh.

I suppose if this had not been the first Mexican story the masks wouldn't have bothered me. Because it was, however, putting them in masks just sent me the message that these were "non persons". It really bothered me.

I don't think it's bad that they never made mention of any Mexican culture up to this point. This show isn't about fulfulling a quota based on real-life demographics; it's a fantasy show. Besides, the whole mask thing is in keeping with the luchadores aspect of Mexican wrestling and it's more a symbol of honor than objectification.
