Has anyone here seen Superman: Doomsday?? Kral really surpassed himself with the score!

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Yeah I watched it a couple of weeks ago on tv. I really liked it - violent and epic. A bit short, but speaking as someone who loves Superman but hasn't yet read the Death of Superman comics, it was a chance to finally see the story. I've gotta check out the comics now

Getting to Robert Kral's score though... yes I'd have to agree its fantastic.
At first when the movie started, I suddenly realised that John Williams' theme isn't the theme to EVERY Superman movie/tv show, so hearing a new theme was a strange experience.
But I soon grew to love it and by the end of the movie I felt the need to track the soundtrack down.
It's available but I haven't yet ordered it (but buysoundtrax.com has a few tracks to download and sample)

The story in the comics is like twelve issues & more, and involves many other super-heroes. This movie was merely 'inspired' by it- it couldn't fully cover it.

And I wasn't exaggerating- it plays in my head almost every day!!!

I love Kral. Both Beck and Kral are fantastic. So is Edmonson for that matter. Joss knows how to pick composers.

Except Newman didn't do it for me in Serenity. I was very very disappointed in that one. Esp when I know he is entirely capable of amazing work, as in Anastasia, Galaxy Quest, or even the Fedex scene in Bowfinger.

I keep wonder what Burwell did before leaving the project. Burwell is one of my favorite composers, though recently he hasn't done anything that has shone either.

You know who I think would have been great for Serenity? (You'll like this one, Chris.) Michael Kamen. I don't like him usually, but his style seems somewhat similar to Kral's come to think of it. Well crafted orchestral flourishes, subtle themes.

Robert Duncan as well. Loved his stuff on season 7 of Buffy.
And Kamen is a legend.
Newman's score on Serenity has grown on me, still, a collaboration twixt he & Edmonson would have been the best of both worlds.

I think Edmonson could have carried the score by himself easily. But yeah, if the studios were worried about his lack of experience on a major picture, they could have used the both of them. Composers usually don't like to compose together, but it happens often enough that it could have worked. Or short of that, they could have composed individually for different parts of the film, like Rabin and Gregson-Williams in Armageddon.

Well, one day, when we have our own studios, we can decide which composer we want to hire for Serenity 4. ;)

I would like to see what Bryan Tyler would do in the Verse as well.

I loved the way John Carpenter & Shirley Walker worked on Escape From LA, and Randy Edelman & Trevor Jones did well on Last Of The Mohicans...

Just sayin' Chrisisall

Right! Not to mention John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams in all of Dreamwork's early CGI pictures (Antz, Shrek).

Yep. They could have easily brought Edmonson in on it. Bastards.

Speaking of John Carpenter, he's not a bad composer. I like his music more than I like his direction, actually.

So short of Greg Edmonson, who would you pick to score Serenity 2?

I vote for Bryan Tyler.

This might sound weird, but...

Alan Sylvestri!

Think of his work on Quick & The Dead, and Back To The Future 3...

(My first choice would have been Basil Pouledoris, but sadly, he is no longer with us)

Yeah baby! Chrisisall

Not weird at all. That man can do anything.

Coming back to Kral though, has he done anything after Angel?

Oohh, another composing talent that needs a chance to go to the big screen in sci-fi: Carl Johnson, of Gargoyles fame.

PS. What's with the "Duct Tape Makes You Smart" though?

He did Minear's The Inside, and the upcoming Batman: Gotham Knight animated DVD.
