I believe Joss said that they only had four episodes left to film when they got the cancellation notice. So it still would have been after "A Hole in the World".

geez. that REALLY did not give them much time to wrap things up. crikey! :( i am looking forward to seeing how they did it, though (since i have not seen season 5 yet, only up to a hole in the world).

Unfortunately, with the short notice they got, Joss wasn't really able to bring the show to its proper conclusion. He pretty much kept it the same (with some minor alterations) as he had planned before finding out about the cancellation. So the last shows you'll see are basically close to what he would have done anyway, as if they were still coming back for season 6.

The good thing is that it leaves the door open for potential movies.

And if memory serves, the WB when they announced they were not bringing back Angel said that they were doing it at that time so that Joss could wrap up the series the way he wanted. It was not enough time and it did not make sense seeing as how Angel was the returning WB show with the highest gains and possibly the only one with gains over last season.

I think you're right. As I remember it, Angel not only was the ONLY WB show to have gains (in viewership) last season, but it had pretty substantial gains. Nothing the WB said regarding the cancellation made any sense at all.

You can tell exactly when the new episodes start, because if memory serves, they changed the opening credits for the post-cancellation-notice episodes to include Illyria. I think they also included Harmony.

Well, yes and no. I hope I explain this right... There were several episodes that were already produced, but not aired after the announcement was made. Remember, the announcement came out right after the 100th episode had aired ("You're Welcome"). At that point, there were 10 episodes left to air to finish the season. However, of those ten, only 4 had not already been filmed. So while they changed the credits to include Harmony after the cancellation announcement, the only episodes they could do anything different with were the last four.

So while the credits to the remaining episodes changed after the announcement, the episodes didn't, except for the last four (to a small degree).

Maybe someone else can explain that better. I'm trying to do this and watch the Bosox at the same time, so I'm really not doing this as well as I should.
