Okay, I'm not a huge Angel watcher, but I did start getting into it after FF was cancelled. I'm really enjoying this arc of the team taking over Wolfram & Hart, but I'm not getting why Gunn agreed to whatever deal with the devil he made to get an all lawyered up brain. Was there some character build-up over the previous episodes/seasons where Gunn was feeling increasingly useless to the team or something? Or will this get explained later? Just seemed like kind of an abrupt decision that didn't appear particularly in character, and his explanation to the team wasn't very satisfying...

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

You got it. He's always felt like everyone else is special, and all he's got is muscle, something that won't be useful at all at Wolfram And Hart. He already felt useless, and now they're going to a place that will make him much moreso. So he accepts the deal.

it is very much in character. towards the middle of season 4 when gunn's relationship with fred is starting to crumble, there are many instances during the research to find out information about the beast that fred turns to wesley first with her discoveries and not confiding in gunn. there are even a couple of semi-heated exchanges between fred and gunn about this. also, in one episode, angel is assigning everyone tasks and he tells gunn to basically sit around, saying something along the lines of "never hurts to have some muscle waiting in the wings". it is a common motif throughout the show after gunn's introduction. gunn frequently mentions himself as "the muscle" like when gwen raiden recruits him to help with her caper.

if you can get past the rather strange last few episodes, season 4 is pretty good. if you want, you may be able to catch season 4 on TNT at 5PM on weekdays.

GROUNDED

In the last ep of S4 he goes into the white room and 'communes' with the WH big cat - he's supposed to have had some sort of revelation.

You know, it's really unfortunate that Gunn fell into the role of "Angel Investigations Muscle" over the seasons...because when he showed up in season 2, he proved many times he was twice the detective Angel, Cordelia, or Wesley were.

Simon: You...you came for us.
Mal: You're on my crew.
Simon: Right. I guess I just didn't...you don't even like me.
Mal: You're on my crew. Why we still talking about this?

I agree that Gunn was more than just muscle. But, I would not say that he was twice the detective that Angel and Wes were. For one example, look at the first couple of eps of S4. Gunn and Fred are at their wits end trying to find Angel and Cordy. They were getting no where (in part due to Connor's meddling), while Wes found and rescued Angel and then clued Angel in on how to find Cordy.

The only sovereign you can allow to rule you is reason!
