I was debating whether or not I wanted to post this here, but since it is now published, I couldn't help but to share my latest work with my fellow Browncoats. Enjoy, and leave feedback.

The Darkest Of Places

What was God doing before he made heaven and earth?

The magic men rolled their dice and I like so many before me, found myself standing in the darkest of places. The door was shut behind me and I walked within, I stood alone, and at the mercy of their dark room. Like my brothers before me, I knew that there was so much more to see and in this black hour my desperation had reached new bounds. The endless night was absolute, but I was desperate to find the magic hidden behind its mysterious veil. I walked the night with little conscience and no goal, but just before all hope had faltered, I saw a small wavering light before me.

I stumbled through the room forgetting the door in hope that my reasons for abandoning the life I once knew would ultimately be justified. The sound of my footsteps echoed and I knew that this room could not continue forever, but all too soon the light failed and alas I found myself in the dark again. I continued unrelenting into the oblivion, for I knew that there was more to be found. As I sauntered, my foot landed on something strange. I knelt to pick it off the cool floor and found it to be a matchbook. The sharp edges of its paper hide were nearly cumbersome. With shaking hands I pulled open the fold and felt inside. My anxiety heightened for there was but one match. I whispered a prayer and hoped that its light would illuminate a path to the truth. I would make this modest spark set a blaze to humble the heavens and so after three tries I found my mark and struck the match. Above, below and all around I could see the silhouette of the knowledge I sought and though my heart bound vigorously I knew that I must bring the magic into focus. I concentrated to bitter anguish until the facts were at the very verge of my perception and just as the lens of my minds eye began to clear the match burned my finger. Instinctively I shook away the pain and as I looked upon my aching digit I could have rend flesh from its bone, for by my lack of discretion I shook away the light. I reared back my head and inhaled deep, my arms were spread and I prepared a mighty bellow. Before I could be released of my pain, I saw another light deeper within the room.

I stumbled through the room forgetting the door and forgetting the match, for this light was far more bold and brilliant. The sound of my footsteps grew as swift as my racing heart and I nearly came to this radiant light when it flickered, faded and expired. My heart crashed and my hopes shattered. My temples began to pulse as a massive headache mimicked my failing heart. I took a few more steps into the enchanting void and almost tripped on a protracted piece of metal below me, I knelt to pick it off the icy floor and found it to be a flashlight. A faint smile eclipsed my face at this newly found scepter of hope. As my anticipation grew without bounds my hands shook ever harder. I had to grasp it with all my strength or I would have dropped the rod. I was fortunate in my blind fumble as I did slide the on switch. The beam of light threw back the silhouettes and melted them to shadows. The secrets of the dark room came to me more clearly and I once again concentrated to milk my craving from its unyielding cloak of night. I surrendered myself completely to the virtues of my desire and could read the first letter of the first word within the first shape. The flashlight began to flicker and I shook it violently to keep the beam bright, but despite my attempt the bulb relent to darkness. I sat on the icy floor and set the flashlight beside me, as I leaned back and looked up into the imperceptible facade of the magic, a tear tickled my left cheek and teased my neck. The vexing shade chortled at my desperation and I collapsed upon the floor. My body relented, but my eyes were open and defiant to the taunting of the dark place. A brilliant light blinded me and I struggled to stand, but before my eyes could adjust to the dazzling radiance, the ever-dark returned. I was at the end of my threshold, but I fought my indolence and stood.

I stumbled forward forgetting the door, forgetting the match and forgetting the flashlight. The sound of my footsteps rang hollow within the dark room and my hopes were all but spent. I walked on to what would cast forever to shame, the magic all around and I with little hope that it would reveal itself. It was this way for hours or days when I walked into a wall. I felt its seamless surface for another door to lead me out of the dark room when I felt something strange and forgotten upon the frozen barricade, it was a light switch. Once again my heart jumped and the smile returned for I was certain that no greater light could ever be found in the dark place. There could be no better way to reveal the dark room’s magic. This small device could bring my journey to an end and I alone would succeed where all my brothers had failed. All my sorrow melted away for I had felt no greater passion in my life. My hands shook so fiercely that I could scarcely attach my finger to the tiny nub that protruded from the wall. I pushed the switch up and was once again blinded by a powerful cascade that threw back the shadows of the night. I squinted as the light infiltrated my delicate eyes and fought with contempt to its pain. I glanced with full focus upon the magic I had sought so desperately. I felt dead to the world that I once knew, for the truth was at long last before me. As I celebrated my victory, I slowly began to realize what I had done. Carefully I studied the magic before me. I interpreted the letters and I interpreted the words within their symbols and despite my greatest hopes or my most harrowing fears I never expected this. All my pleasure melted away for I had felt no greater pain in my life. I desperately grappled for the switch on the wall and as swiftly as I could shut the light off. I walked away from the wall and knew all at once why the sun sleeps when the eerie black creeps and why the flames luminescence runs when the gloom of endless twilight comes to call. I knew why those who came before me into the dark room never returned. I will never again be at the door that brought me to this place and will never have the courage to turn on the light to find my way back home. I accepted the night and stepped into the oblivion before me.

I stumbled forward and had forgotten the door, the match, the flashlight and the switch, but I will never forget the magic. The sound of my footsteps were joined by all the others and I like my brothers who came before me shall forever stroll the path of darker places.

He was preparing hell for those who pry into mysteries.

You have a very dark personality Early, I like this side of your writing. Profound, this is the best "Curiosity killed the cat" I've ever seen or read.

"...as I looked upon my aching digit I could have rend flesh from its bone..."

Should this be 'rent'?

Tricky word, and as I am not an English major (I am a psychology student) I couldn’t say either way. If it is incorrect, then it slipped passed two editors. The copy pasted here is not the published draft. However this particular part is the same as the published draft.

It's beautiful, and...

kinda creepy.

What made you think of this?

"Oh my god, it's grotesque! Oh, and there's something in a jar."

Yeah I had to look twice ;)

The sentence is referring to the past ("I could have") and according to this: http://www.answers.com/rend&r=67 you should either use rent or rended.

Of course, since it's published, this is kind of a non-issue now!

Believe it or not, but the inspiration came from a Philosophy class.
