Every year since 1999, I've always made a ten best list of the movies that I've seen. Just something that I do. And like and unlike other critics, my list usually includes general critical favorites and Oscar vehicles, as well as personal pics and faves that would not be on anyone elses lists. Mine isn't complete yet, but it's about halfway done, which is where one would want to be.

So I'm asking all those who do these kinds of things, what's on your best of 2005 list? No need to put SERENITY on the list, since it's implied that it'll definitly be on all of our lists.

Here are mine.

THE UPSIDE OF ANGER- This is what I like to call a hidden gem movie. This is a flick that going into it you're not expecting much. But as you watch the flick, you realize that you're watching something that's incredibly funny, sad, moving and insightful. A tour de force of acting and writing, this is one flick that y'all should try to find, just to see Keri Russell scream "FUCK YOU!!!" to Joan Allen.

SIN CITY- Not only one of the best comic book movies made, but also a hard-core shot of adrenaline through the heart and a glorious resurrection of the film noir. I dare you to watch this and not feel exhilarated.

EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED- A comedic road trip in another country turns into a touching tribute to the Holocaust in this wonderful indie flick that shows how we're all connected through time and space.

GRIZZLY MAN- Even though MARCH OF THE PENGUINS was the most successful doc financially in theatres, this latest doc from Werner Herzog about the late Timothy Treadwell exposes the fine line between madness and sanity and how nature brings it out in man.

And tenatively, WALK THE LINE- The music bio-pic done in a way that makes it seem fresh and new. I actually like this better than RAY.

Those, as well as SERENITY of course, are my fave films of 2005 so far. I'm hoping that MILLIONS, CAPOTE, GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, KING KONG, SYRIANA, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, THE PRODUCERS and/or MUNICH are good enough for me to add them onto the list.

And for individual things, THE HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY has the best individual scene in a movie, it being the whale scene. And ELIZABETHTOWN has the best compilation soundtrack. Of course, one would expect that from a Cameron Crowe film, even if it's his worst. And CORPSE BRIDE has the distinction of the best Animated Film of the year.

Oh yeah, KISS KISS BANG BANG was another flick I really wanted to see. And THREE BURIAL's looks like it could be a good modern western. Tommy Lee hasn't been in anything really good in a while, so maybe directing could be the next course in his career.

Oh, and MATCH POINT is supposed to be a return to form for Woody Allen, so there's that as well.

I enjoyed BATMAN BEGINS, but not as much as the Burton BATMAN's. They had that pop gothic grandeur to them that really made them their own. I appreciate Nolan trying to ground the whole thing in realism and going deep into the mind of Bruce Wayne, but it kinda lacks that magic that BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS has.

I'm not trying to hijack my own thread. Just stating what I thought about something that I know will definitly be on Eberts ten best list.

Wouldn't it be cool if SERENITY ended up on at least one major critics ten best list, or if it ended up beating SYRIANA in one of the critics awards in the best ensemble category?

I recently hired the DVD of Sin City and personally I found it to be utter tripe..

Serenity was the only movie to entice me to the cinemas this year (3 times).

Also I have to disagree with you regarding Batman Begins. This was the best Batman movie ever and i'm thinkin it ranks second to Serenity for me.

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

I saw a lot of movies this year, but the ones that stand out in my mind other than Serenity are:

- Sin City: I didn't read the comics before seeing the flick, and I still haven't, but I totally loved this movie.

- Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy: If only for the dolphin song alone...

- The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Mock me if you must, but I read this book when I was 13 and I cried like a baby. Then I saw the movie, and I cried like a baby, lol.

- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Pure silliness :)

- Jarhead: The cast of this film was amazing, especially Peter Sarsguard.

- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: I may or may not get flack for this one, but anyone who's seen the previous 3 films has to admit that GoF is the best one yet.

- Walk the Line - Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were fantastic in this, I just say it this past Saturday and they blew me away.

I'm also really looking forward to seeing The Chronicles of Narnia, King Kong, Brokeback Mountain and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Ok my top ten best films this year (aside from Serenity)

1) Sin City- I fell in love with this jewel.

2) Fantastic 4- Ohhhh I love comic book adaptations!

3) Chronicles of Narnia- Kicked the shiite out of Harry Potter.

4) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- I carried a towel around with me for like a week!

5) Elizabethtown- *sigh*

6) Severed- Filmed entirely in B.C. and an awesome take on the zombie-genre.

7) Batman Begins... Not just a comic book adaptation but it instills in me faith for a better movie future.

8) War Of The Worlds- and I *Hate* Tom Cruise with a vehemence but I loved this movie anyway.

9) Madagascar- I watched this to kill time in Melbourne waiting for a train and what can I say I'm a kid at heart.

10) The Longest Yard- usually I don't like comedies but I thought this was great, oh and can I throw in Dukes of Hazzard because it was SOOO COOL!!!!

7)

The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems.

I really liked Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Hitchhiker's Guide was good. Did anybody like Four Brothers? I thought it was really good but I'm not sure if anyone else did. I watched it a little bit after I watched the sneak peek of Serenity so I was still all emotional over it. I think my state of mind made the movie a lot better. I also thought Brothers Grimm was really funny. That's another movie no one likes. I guess I have bad taste in movies. Oh well. I'm going to watch Chronicles of Narnia today. Hopefully, it's better than Harry Potter.
