I was wondering that too, but forgot about it until just now.

I can't imagine what it would be for. Like an immunization? But for what?

Please help us to know what it is!

Mal mentions to Simon that he will probably need to get innoced (innoculations) before landing. Assuming of course they don't crash first.

It's an outside planet...who knows what kind of diseases they may have! But you were correct, it was an immunization...as most have come to a conclusion to... Not positive though.

There are many Diseases out in the ´verse. Mal can´t be immune to every single one of them. The "Natives" are. So he (and the rest of the Crew) needs an immunization. I think it´s this simple.

What I figure is that as in the episode Train job. With the case of Bodan's malady, there are all sorts of quirks that come hand in hand with the tera-forming of a planet. So therefore to prevent any disease that Mal might catch he would need to have an innoculation.

I agree with the others in that it was an innoculation shot (not to mention a good enough premise to go downstairs into the infirmary for Joss's "wonder shot.")

Something my over-active imagination worked up, though, after seeing the movie a couple times: Maybe the innoculation was some sort of heavy-duty immune booster (who knows medical advances over 500 years?) that could combat the dangerous effects of any foreign diseases on the planets they land on, but also that could help a person live through a near-fatal injury (such as a gunshot), long enough for that person to get actual medical attention.

This could account for Jayne being able to walk on his leg hours after having it skewered by a harpoon (I'm not a doctor, but that always seemed a little weird to me). Also, why a certain character could survive getting a samurai sword shoved through his midsection by the end of the movie.

Again, pure speculation and easily debuncable.

It is an unspecified innoculation (booster?).

If you listen close (may help to turn on subtitles) right as Mal leaves the engine room and sees Simon for the first time he says "guess I need to get innocked, doc." during that initial conversation before they start going downstairs. It's very easy to miss. I had to replay that bit a few times to catch it. It's also in the script in the visual companion.

When they reach the infirmary, Simon gives him the shot.

I'm guessing some kind of "standard" innoculation that requires renewal only once in a while. That's why only Mal needed one at that time.

Probably thrown in just to emphasize that Simon is a Doc for people who never saw Firefly and are just meeting everyone for the first time...

Someone else 'round here once joked that it was Mal's anti-psychotic medication.
