Ah, self taught. Now I feel really bad.

The major obsticles i'm (oh lets face it, using as an excuse) finding, are -

Space - I seem to barely have enough room to sew, not having enough money to move out and get a place where I can get fabric spread out for cutting and my machine set up without dog/cats/brothers and small children threatening to maim it and themselves, and make the necessary mess with out my mother looking at me like I just plunged a knife in her heart is getting to be a real serious pain in the ass. At the moment, the only space I i'm allowed to inhabit freely is 'my' bedroom, in the almost 4m sq room I have so much furniture struggling inadequetly to contain stuff that used to be spread over my entire home, that I literally have to climb into the room and use a set path to be able to get into bed. If I want to use the work table, I have to move everything off it and put it on the bed, If I want to get to my store cupboard, I have to move the work table. We don't even have an outside space I could use without everything I own being stolen.
Money - believe it or not, I wouldn't have the faintest idea where I could buy stuff like leather, I knew in london, but not up north, I can't even locate a decent source for braiding in this area. Car bonnets are easy, but the tools and transport are not.
Information - I've scoured libraries, even thought there are plenty of book on armour, no one stocks any practical guides, Amazon I gave up on. All of the groups I can hear of and get information on are southern, I've heard of one leather craftsman in the area, but no matter how many leads I get, no answer.

and probably most importantly.

Nerve - I'm scared of starting and it all going swiftly down the crapper. I want to learn from someone who can teach me where I'm going wrong, even if it involves being sniggered at. I can't learn from books, i can't process the information. You could write me an essay on a flat fell stitch, and i'd never get it. Someone actually puts a seam in front of me and I've got it instantly.

But it is something to bear in mind. I think its just going to get to the point where I go crazy in that dead job and either become a screaming vagabond and not care anymore, or runaway and just find something worthwile to do.

When I say that I need to find someone to marry for their money, most of the time i'm not kidding.

What ithink I meant to say before the whinging started was If you could actually build a foot high candy flinging trebuchet, then we'd be coming to find you!

that would be so cool.
And yes, signs, maybe even sign posts, are going to be a necesary thing.

Hi Tristan
We'll be looking forward to meeting you. You can tell Browncoats by their Browncoat support ribbon pin or their badge holder lanyards that say Firefly Browncoat Serenity. It's a dead giveaway. Don't forget to bring them Browncoats! But I will have more for sale if you happen to forget

Does anyone know if there will be a Firefly Fan table? There's no movie to tout (yet) and all the swag is gone from 'Versal.

...London...north of London...."bonnet", not car hood...Seryn, I am going to go out on a limb here and guess you do not live in the Continental United States. That is going to make it difficult to apprentice you...as I live in Alabama. Oh, well, there is always the internet.

I started out leather work in college, in an apartment about the same size as a postage stamp. The entire apartment consisted of a bed, a bathroom, a very tiny kitchen, and my hobby. Once a month, I would save money and travel to Birmingham to Tandy leather to buy scraps and tools to learn with. Being a Drama major, and a costumer, I eventually earned the right to use their workshops and Costume shop. That is when I really began to teach myself and learn from the Costume professor. This was also back when not everyone had access to the internet, but we did have a twelve-story library that happened to have quite a selection of books on arms and armor. That is where the metal-working came in. My parents lived close enough to the college that I was able to go home on weekends to work with all the power tools there (and completely took over the garage in the process). I am also lucky enough to have developed a working friendship with a local iron works, and get my sheet steel at their cost. As for technique, that sort of developed along the way. I would see pictures of pieces I wanted to make, and then just hammered the steel until it looked like I wanted it to. My early stuff is VERY rough, but I am getting better at finishing them off.
All I can say to begin with for leather work is get what scraps you can and play. Are you interested in the construction part, the decoration (carving, etc), or a little of both? There are always articles to be found on leather armor construction and decoration, and many of these techniques can be translated into other types of leatherwork.
Yes, they both require time and money, but the payoff, in a beautiful, practical piece, is worth the effort.

If you are interested, I will dig through my bookmarks and see what I still have for links.

As far as the trebuchet goes...maybe a foot-high catapult would be a little more practical. I will see if I can squezze it into the insane build schedule I have set for myself before DragonCon!

Holding until you get back, Captain.

Also, is it bad that every time I read the word "trebuchet" I think of flinging trolls?

Also: ROHAN! I dressed as Eowyn one year for Halloween, in her riding garb.

The secret hidey spot getas my vote as well.

Yes, I live in lil ole england. Sorry, I thought it was common knowledge by now.

Which is why i haven't rung your door bell already.

What I did do (inspired by the embarrasment over whining like an idiot) I dug up my contacts book and did a little bit of phoning around to find people who sell leather who may have scrap (yup, I hit upon the grand idea of practicing on scraps all by my little self)and i've been picking apart old bags trying to work out how it was done. no luck on searching the net, but I didn't spend that long, more tonight. I'm hoping its possible to improvise a lot of the tools.

It a sort of step in the right direction. I just wish I could find the supplier in the north, there has to be some somewhere!

Yep, scraps are fun and usually easy to find. As far as the tools, yes, it is easy to convert common household items to the usage you may need. Let me know what you need, and I can tell you what to use.

Trebuchet---"Trollbuchet"---yeah, I can see that. Never thought to put it to that use, though.
*scribble, scribble, scribble..."trollbuchet"...I can do that*

Rohan-esque may be a better description. I have the leather "surcoat" with the 200 or so steel and copper plates sewn to it, but not much beyond that. I will have to throw together the rest (in between finishing of the wife's armor, building my Mal costume, and building her Kaylee costume...oh, and the "trollbuchet).

Until then.

Part of the reason im whinig so much about jobs is that I'm trying to find another one to pay for it all! (other than general career anxiety etc.)

I really want to dress up now.

Trollbuchet. I shall bring ammo.

(I found a place selling a different variety of hides, from about 2 pounds a sq foot up to 5, they didn't mention scrap, but i'm going to ask, enquire about minimum orders. Next is identirying the tools i need to start off, and find out where I can get them from!) (see, I can do things!) **********************************************************

Good. I look forward to seeing you there.

Basic tools you will need:
If you plan on carving patterns in the leather, hobby knives (X-acto knives) with a variety of blades...if not that, a razor blade. Also, something that you can draw on leather with (you'll have to experiment to find out what works on your leather).
To stich it all together, you will need a needle and strong thread. (Genius, that, eh?) Seriously, it would be best if you get ahold of an awl or any other round, sharp implement with a handle. That way, you can pre-punch the holse and save wear and tear on your fingers. It's a nuisance to have to stop sewing for fifteen minutes while you staunch the flow of blood because your skin provided less resistance to the back of the needle than the leather provided to the pointy end.
If these are not your intentions, let me know what you plan on doing, and I can offer suggestions from there. I have worked on leather ranging from 14-16oz (for armor) all the way down to garment leather (for my wedding outfit).

I really hope to be able to build the trollbuchet now...I would love to see trolls flying around DragonCon.

Should we be worried now? I mean, more worried than we were?

Aye Tristan, I know all about how soft and eager to bleed everywhere finger tips are, even after 4 years I can't train myself to a thimble. ah. looks like a good time to start again.
I was thinking more along the lines of embossing, I know a lot of it is done with stamps, but iwas hoping that there were methods of free hand embossing and tools for it. Not so sure about carving, I don't think i've ever seen it done, unless its so obvious i'm missing it.

but hey. awls I have, though not fine, also have wedge shaped needles for hand and machine sewing. I intended to make leather starps and buckles for my last college projects and its just ended up going very wrong, but hopefully I could start doing that now. I may even get up to a point where I can make the armour for it as I wanted, then its just to make the wings and find a bloke skinny and bidable enough to wear it!

Never could use a thimble myself...ended up causing more damage to my fingers with than without.
Yes, embossing can be done freehand, you just need the tools to do it (tell you something you don't know, right? ) You can always take old screwdrivers and blunt down the ends. That way, you have a straight-edge embosser. Practice with patterns that use straight edges until you are more confident, then you can move on to fancier designs. When you do that, you will obviously need other tools. Most embossing can be done using blunted screwdrivers of various sizes; the smaller the tip, the more curve you can put into the designs.
Straps are supposed to be the easiest thing to make; after all, they are only straight strips of leather...wrong! I have discovered that to make a really nice looking strap, the edges have to be beveled. If you do not have access to an edge beveler, you can always use the hobby knife or razor blade to shave a shallow angle all the way around the strap. Are you making your own buckles? I try that every now and then out of heavy-gauge wire, but they neve look as pretty as store-bought buckles do.
What type of armor are you envisioning? Most of my work has been thick plates lashed together, but none of them involved wings...

my problem always was that i'd just stop using the finger that i'd put the thimble on, and so stab all of my others fingers and sew craply.

I put some photos of what I was attempting to do on the corset talk thread, I didn't want to fill this one up with pictures.

on a completely unrelated note - On a keyboard, what button goes above the tab key and left of the number 1? cause I've just noticed mine missing and i'm wondering if its important...

Well, y'all have convinced me... Now let me convince my bank account and get back to you.

You know, it's really amazing to think that even though I haven't been exceedingly active here, I know I could show up there and be greeted with open arms. We're a family... and *that* makes us mighty.

Oh, I'm getting choked up. Honestly, there could be tears.

140 days!

Oh the site www.dragoncon.org now has each name linked to a profile as I mentioned before they tend to do. The profiles are however, not up to date, as they still mention the Upcoming Serenity movie and Adam's work on 'The Inside'.

Gotta a couple of tips for you Sikkukut on how to save some cash to make the trip less expensive for you.

1) Post on all the boards to see if anyone is driving from your area you could car pool with. It will save on travel expenses. Illinois is not too awful far from Atlanta.

2) Try to room w/ other browncoats. This will save you a ton of money on room costs.

3) Buy your Dragon Con ticket online now! It will save you a bit of cash.

4) Con Suite!!! The Dragon Con Con Suite serves food & drinks all day & late into the night. If you are not too picky you can eat there & save money on food costs as the Con Suite is free.

Looking forward to meeting you there!

The wife & I will be there Thursday around 1 or 2 in the afternoon as we are every year. We like to get in early, get settled, get our passes & then hang w/ the early brown coats.

Anyone who wants to meet up we should come up w/ a rallying point & a time to hook up. Exchanging cell #s would be a good idea too.

I am going to try to be there early Friday, but I may not be able to get off work early...is there a rallying point for those Browncoats arriving after 7:00PM Atlanta time?
I think we are staying in the main hotel (not sure which one that is...as stated before, this is my first DragonCon). Is there a welcoming committee of us'n's at the front door?

Holding until you get back , Captain.

SERYN

I thought that, i'm going to be there about five or six, (my flight lands at 4, depends on lateness, getting through the airport and getting to the hotel, so could be even later)

Pretty sure my mobile wont work in the states and not sure where I would check in. so...

I've only checked myself into a hotel once, can't remember how that went, and as nothing is in my name its just occured to me that I don't have a clue.
