Hey all

Havn't been here in a while, and I imagine I'll be MIA for most of the summer. For the next five weeks, I'll be working overtime for C.P. in Wadena with no Internet access between Monday and Thursday. And then after that, it's a month and a half in Lloydminster, so I won't be around for a while.

But I'm getting off topic here. Have any of you guys seen CARS yet? I was so glad that I saved this movie for last on Friday. After the let-down that was THE INCREDIBLES and the whole corporate buy-out business, I was thinking that Pixar had lost a bit of it's edge. But CARS was definitly a huge step-up. I loved every single thing about it. The overall themes of the story, the tiny details (my fave being how when Sarge raises the flag while playing "Taps" every morning, Fillmore immediately counters it with Jimi Hendrix's "The Star Spangled Banner" ["Turn that junk off!!!!";"Respect the classics, man."], everything about it. It was just perfect. That dude from TIME magazine had it right. This is the first great movie of the summer. Here's hoping that SUPERMAN RETURNS keeps it up.

Peace

"There's only one "Return" ok, and it ain't "of the King", it's "of the Jedi."

"Maybe we should start calling your friend 'Padme' because he loves 'Mannequin Skywalker' so much, Right? (imitating robot) Danger...danger...my name is Anakin...my shitty acting is ruining saga."

Excerpt of internet teaser for CLERKS 2.

I saw it on Friday. I loved it! Mainly because I'm such a racing dork, but it was a really sweet movie and it probably replaces Monsters, Inc. as my favorite Pixar movie.

Blimey.

I thought I was the only one who thought The Incredibles peaked with a superb trailer.

I heff seen ein clip mit Schumacher being ein Ferrari. Someone should tell him the posts of people unable to act with funny accents is already taken by Dolph, Arnie and Jean-Claude.

Not that I'm against funny accents. "Allo, 'Allo can still crack me up.

Check out the IMDb for the (hopefully not apochryphal) story of the Civil Aviation Authority issuing a NOTAM obliging British pilots to stop greeting French Air Traffic Control with "Good Moaning."

Saw it on Saturday and loved it. Bought the soundtrack CD on Sunday.

Awesome movie. Fun characters, good story, funny jokes --all that was missing was the transforming ( ).

Doc Hudson was awesome.

And I liked John Ratzenberger's little bit at the end, about what a cheap cop-out it was to use the same actor over and over again to save money.

I'm not sure how close that'll get you, but if you go to the User Comments, set the filter to "Best", have a look at Page 3 and find a review called "War is Hell" by John Fernandez 21/4/2003.

Good story, even if he has no clue about what is funny.

ORPHEUS

Actually, I was sort of disappointed by Cars. Pixar's strong selling point has been not only top of the line computer animation, but a second to none story department. And after what I thought was cinematic perfection in The Incredibles, Cars felt like a better idea than a film.

It looked fantastic, Pixar can do no wrong when it comes to animation, but the story was seriously lacking. It really was just a cartoon version of Doc Hollywood (exactly the same way that A Bug's Life was a cartoon version of Seven Samurai).

When the whole conflict of the film is firmly planted in the world of stock car racing, you're taking a huge risk with the audience, especially considering how many people out there know nothing about stock car racing, let alone actually care about it.

John Lasseter is one hell of a director, but he's no Brad Bird. His ideas are always more entertaining than the stories they're put in. Vaguely anthropomorphic cars is a good idea, and a genius basis for a line of toys, which I really feel is what they were trying to go for, but it makes for an hard movie to connect with. When the audience is more hung up on how the cars built the world they're living in rather than the film's actual story, something's gone wrong.

Even though The Incredibles was a success, it was far too hard for Disney to co-opt and create a marketing frenzy over. But Cars is a perfect cash cow.

But in the end, I can see Cars for what it is: A family film geared towards kids and anyone who loves cars. And in that respect, I think it's a very good film. Excellently animated, great voice-casting, and just plain fun.

I enjoyed Cars, but I thought Pixar settled for less than they could've delivered.
