ooh, very nice. Great prices. And some have the "buy it now" option.

Now, here's the thing. Don't you need a choli and a petticoat and all the other things to wear under the saree? It gets complicated. I need the whole outfit laid out for me.

I finished the grommits on one of Mai's front corset panels this morning. Only the other one to finish and then I am DONE DONE DONE.

you usually need a blouse (most sarees come with a 'blouse peice' attatched - if they don't, any top that goes will do, or i can find you another site that sells them) and a skirt.

she sells skirts for 2.99, but if you have a long drawstring waist skirt (i.e. one with an adjustable non-stretch waistband) then thats fine.

and then its just your saree (and underwear of course!)

My mum taught me how to drape them when i was a kid, and its a bit hard to explain, but if you get one i'll try and do diagrams or something.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Multifab-Online - these are a bit more expensive, but i'd be very tempted, especailly as they have a service where they make the blouse and skirt for you.

hmm, this site does make the skirts and tops for you. Not bad prices, either, really.

Lemme think about it.

Here's a question for you: if I decided I wanted one, could I have it mailed to you, since if I ship it to the US, it'll cost even more.

You need something to tuck the pleating into, either a belty kind of thing or the petticoat/underskirt. Mind, you could just go as Inara in the sponge bathing scene and skip the choli. (;
There are many ways to drape a sari, regional styles and variations, but they all look beautiful and quite elegant.
I heard somewhere that pink is the rough equivalent in India for our use of navy blue. Pink sari = navy suit?

I am freaking a bit about my Andy costume. The low tops and the shirt should be so easy to find, but does anyone know where I can find a collar like choker, preferably psuedo-leather? I did not notice he was wearing a collar until that damn action figure debuted at Comic Con...

I hope this is allowed since it is costumey...

actually, I had a semi-brilliant idea late last night when I couldn't sleep.

I want a saree, I'm making mai's costume. I'm thinking maybe asking Mai to buy my sari. So, if I have her order it, would it be okay to have her send it to you?

I haven't run this by her yet. It would mean me making an actual decision on a sari. They're all so very pretty pretty pretty. And I want the custom choli/skirt thingy, too.

I have to back and look at them all now I'm on a computer that lets me see colours proper-like.

Oh, good...a quicker-loading costume page!
Nothing to really panic over...things are slowly shaping up.
The major project I'm tackling right now is trying to build Mal's Firefly boots...I have the shoes chosen, and the spat constructed and I need to add a few things to them (zipper, ribbing, and the upper portion). I just have to figure out how to connect the two...no, I should say, I need to connect the two; I'm just putting it off until I'm sure I have this right. All manner of things shall be well.
By the looks of the pretty links y'all have been posting, I am looking forward to seeing these costumes!

wow, that is pretty.
And she would wear it, but only if it came in silk - she's a mite partial to silks and satins that girl.

Serenity - i love the rose coloured one, i was considering that one myself, but decided to go for a darker colour. Or not, i don't know. I mean, my favorite colour is green, but the introvert in me is counselling dark colours, but theres also the bit of me that recalls all the photo's of me in peaches and soft pinks that make my skin and hair come alive. So i'm totally stuck.

anyway, this is about you.

so i like the rose, and i think it will suit your colouring, but thats is an absolutely divine shade of blue that you will also look stunning in, so... i'm no help at all.

sorry!

Tristan! you can make boots?

ok, you know whats coming next don't you? Don't worry, i wont ask for them for D*C, but at some point would you make me some pirate boots (exactly like Captain Jacks, but with a heel) or at least some boot covers? you know the flippy top cavalier style ones?

and a hat, maybe a hat, but i'll ask about that when i find out how successfull altering and breaking down my felt hat is (it will do for D*C, but in the long run, i'd love a leather one)

How much would boots or boot covers cost? Rough guesstimate? I know theres quite a lot of leather in them and its got to be a decent thickness, but would i be looking at a lot?

Ok, I am having a slight difficulty locating an item necessary for the completion of a costume...anyone here ever heard of something called "galosh hooks" or "galosh buckles"? Yeah< neither had I until a friend gave me a few. Turns out they are the perfect base for the buckles on Mal's coat. Only problem is that they seemingly do not exist for sale anywhere...check out this link to an ebay auction; the silver closures are what I am talking about:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3003&item=68518

I have had no luck finding these. I appeal to my costuming sistren and brethren...anyone have any ideas where I may find these, or an alternative? They are a tension-closure, not unlike a larger version of a clip-on earring (I have tried those, and they do not work)...
Thanks in advance!

It didn't cost any different to have it shipped to me or to you, so I shipped it to me.

And, I ordered the blouse and skirt.

All told, $64. Shipping and everything.

I am chuffed. Thanks for the link.

Now, you must get one! There was one really pretty yellow and green one. Or a nice dark red? Do you do red?

Bustin into your thread.

For those not brave enough to tackle an actual saree, how about salwar lengha? I love them. eBay item #180009792623 is an example (not an extremely good one, they don't have it on the right mannequin so it fits weird). They are a long full skirt, a choli and a dupatta. I like a big dupatta that is at least a couple of yards long to drape around, tucking it in at my right front waist, pulling it across my belly, then under my left arm, then up over my back and over my right shoulder to hang in gathers down over my right arm. It gives the look of saree without the danger of the whole thing falling off at inopportune moments.

Simon did you get my Pm? Let me know.

The only problem is that it say it takes 4-6 weeks to come. so i may be asking if it can go to you and you just send me the blouse peice to make up, then i'll pick up the rest at D*C. But if i win it, i'll email him and find out what the avrage times are - i've seen things stated as months and they arrive a few days later, so i'll ask him what his typical times are.

but isn't it beautiful?

Okey dokey, I'm presuming you're not already involved with a costume shop in a theatricl group at this point.
Google for Theatrical Supplies
Try a university drama department or local theater group.
Check the yellow pages (or local equivalent) for Theater supply company.
Darned if I can remember where we used to get our shoe stuff.
I did have to stick a pirate-y bit onto a pair of existing boots one time and then dye them black. We used acetone (to clean it afore) and barging cement, then dyed the whole shebang. They looked pretty good. Warning: all very smelly fumey stuff that will give you a massive headache and make you sick if you do not use it in a well ventilated area.
You can try Amazon Vinegar and Pickling works (out of Davenport Iowa)They've got an entire small catalog dedicated to shoes.

They've been in business for over 100 years.
They've got suspender parts and more. (Hatmaking stuff too.)
If you're outside the US/Canada I have no idea what to tell you. Most of the above suggestions should still hold.
If you're in LA just spit, you should be able to hit someone who could make a better suggestion.

If all else fails just wander around a fairly good sized fabric store until you see something that might work. Don't be afraid to ask the clerks for help, they love interesting projects and can get very creative. Bring pictures of what you're trying to accomplish if you can.

I shall go and trawl through all of my junkmail folders - i'm on the beta version of live mail - lately its been sticking all the viagra ads in my inbox and blanking out my past time newsletter. So it figures that mail from my contacts has gone awry.

Yes, Steven Fry, a marvellous man. Were he not twice my age and gay i'd be making a serious effort to marry him, to spend the rest of my life talking to him would just be incredible.

Alas, there is the gay issue. and the fact that a serious attempt to get to know him better would only reslut in tears and a restraining order.

But he'd better buck his ideas up. he has a serious contender for his hero status - a recent addition, but the african tribe befriending, cow jumping smily man of no fear Bruce Parry is shortly to feature on the myspace page. Just as soon as i find the picture of him pre cow jumping - decorated with tree bark and cow dung, sun burnt nervous and butt naked (literally - did you know it was possible to have a buttock tatooed?) and having the time of his bloody life.
What a hero.

so its still a sensible place, being as i can't imagine anyone would have a lot of nerve endings per square inch in the thing you spend most of your life sitting on. Of course, me being an idiot, i want one on the back of my neck and another at the base of my spine. Owie.

No I didn't, to be honest i didn't even know we had a zoo in this thread.
I wonder if they have tapirs? Oh yes, there they are *whistles*

Now, This one had to be bought out and shown to the world.

Whoopsie. By "here" I meant "here" here, not "here". The physical location whereat my carcass is currently parked.
Except the zoo is really about 40 miles from "here", but we go "there" often.
No tapirs "here", I mean "there", at the zoo.
"There" has all manner of creepy crawly, fuzzy, flighted, slimy, smelly, noisy, scary, smooshie critters. "Here" has chickens, native fauna, me, a seven year old boy, and one captive experimental particle physicist. He's held in place by a wedding ring. There are alpacas up the road a bit, but they are not "here".
Here, let's get back to the yummy saris.

not just yet - I want to know how one goes about capturing an experimental particle physicist.
Do standard traps work? nets? or do you have to hunt them and get them with the tranquilisers?

really, i'd like to know, they may be usefull to have around.

Well, this thread officially has a zoo now. Or maybe just a zoo-ette. With Llama's and tapirs. Cos i likes them.

Yes, back to sari's.

I'm living on the edge here, every time ebay send me a message (and they love sending me junk they do) my heart leaps up into my mouth. But at least i know the other one is there. Though hang on, when does the black one you showed me run out?

argh! must go see.

oh grizwald - i keep forgetting to say - is that you in the photo's? you look lovely, and the sari is so nice, the drape is interesting, is that the basic way, but the pallu brought behind the back and forward over the shoulder?

Edit - i checked the black sari's end time - its in about four hours - and i don't have the money in my account to make a snap-you-can-regret-it-later buy.

ah well. I will have to hope that it doesn't sell and they relist it, incase i don't get the other one. tis a pity, its so beautiful.

Thanks seryn. That's actually a salwar lengha, like I was talking about. That one is mine, but my daughter is wearing it in the photo (she looks much better in it than I do). It's tucked in at the front waist, then brought around with the pallu over the shoulder.
