Hey All

I posted this as a blog, but no one's responding to it, so I decided to re-post this as a thread.

I got some big news involving the greatest rock band in the world. For months now, there's been speculation that The Rolling Stones themselves are going to be coming to my quaint, little hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan for the first time in their nearly 50 year history.

Now, for those Browncoats in Boston or New York or whatever city that they always go to whenever they tour, this may not seem like a big deal. But you have to understand. Even though the Maritimes may bitch about their current situation, the prairies (specifically Saskatchewan) is fairly low on the global cultural stage. So far, the only things we're known for is Leslie Nielsen and CORNER GAS. And when it comes to big musical acts that tour, for the most part they skip Saskatchewan completely, and if they do come to our rectangular province, they usually go up to Toon Town (that's Saskatoon for those who don't know prairie lingo).

Well, last week, the worst kept secret in Regina history was confirmed and tickets went on sale yesterday. They were saying that they'll sell out in two hours. Turned out to be twenty minutes. And I was saying to myself that I absolutely have to get tickets for this, because I'm such a big Stones fan and if I were to miss out on them coming to my hometown, I'll be forever kicking myself.

Well, even though I was working, my Mom (who I will be thanking endlessly) did the impossible and managed to get me a ticket to the biggest event Regina has ever seen, surpassing the two Grey Cups.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I'M GOING TO SEE THE ROLLING STONES!!!!!

Also, on a few side notes, I spoke too soon about Unity. I only did the one week there before we were transferred to Moose Jaw, so now I'm driving back and forth between here and Prairie Oasis Motel last, this and next week. So I'll only be in Unity for my last two weeks. The bad news about that is that we've been asked to stop doing so much overtime, so I don't know how much of a pay cut I'll be getting. But with expenses, should be enough to get me past my financial goal for the beginning fo the school year. And harvest is coming up, so there's that to fall back on.

And I'm wondering if I should retire from the wedding videography business. See, I havn't done a wedding since October of last year, and I did one again last weekend. And the whole thing was a dream. The gal was the sweetest gal you'd ever meet and the groom for once wasn't a complete dick. And they actually toasted me in their thank yous to the crowd. They said that I record their memories. That, next to Don McKellar telling me that Quentin Tarantino is exactly like me, was one of the best compliments I've ever heard. So after I edit the footage together and give them the final product, I should quit on this perfect high note instead of being disenfranchised and burned by the experience.

Well, that's it for me now, folks. And on a side note, for those Stones fans out there, Chapter 8 of my epic series YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN has River and her band playing "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Gimmee Shelter" to a newly disenfranchised generation. Would like a rock perspective on that, please.

Peace

And as a minor update, I've heard that demand and anticipation is so high, that the Stones are putting on an extra concert on the preceding Friday. They'll be playing both on the 6th and 8th of October. I got tickets for the 8th.

This is going to be so big for Regina.

Me too!

Except I am going to see them in London in a coupla weeks time. The annoying thing about this trip is in retrospect I wish I had gone to see them in my hometown of Glasgow. See, the stadium they are playing in Glasgow isn't much to shout about - it would have been OK though, as it is the band that makes the gig not the venue.
But....
I got the chance to go see them in THEIR hometown of London, playing at the brand spanking new Wembley (the national stadium of England in case you don't know). So I thought - this is an experience not to be missed and got my tickets. Well, coupla months after I bought the tickets it is announced that Wembley will not be completed on time and the gigs have been moved to Twickenham (a rugby stadium). Dang! I was pretty pissed off - though I am now simply relieved the gig will be on at all after the assorted heart-stopping news items (Keith's surgery, Ronnie's rehab). But in the end gotta shell out for flights and accomodation to see the band at a venue that is the equivalent of one that is a £3 train ride from where I live. So thats what I get for being ambitious!
It should still be a great time though, and when I've seen the Stones I have my next gig to look forward to - Bruce Springsteen in Dublin! Now that's going to be awesome...unless something goes wrong! I have a poor record with gigs going smoothly - had a REM one fall apart on me last year.
I really hope they do 'Wild Horses'!

"Wild Horses" is all right, but it's "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Brown Sugar" that I really want to hear them do. And also "Rough Justice", "Back Of My Hand", "Oh No, Not You Again" and "Look What The Cat Dragged In" off their latest album A BIGGER BANG.

Have you read chapter 8 of YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN? It has River and her band playing two Stones songs. You'd probably have to read my first two stories and the previous chapters to get why she's doing that.

I think 'Honky Tonk Woman' and 'Brown Sugar' are probably dead certs at any Stones gig (judging from set lists I've seen). I think I would be lucky to get 'Wild Horses', but even luckier if Keith sings 'Happy' rather than some of the other crap he's done...
Some songs off A Bigger Bang are to be expected, but would you really include any of them in your ultimate 20 song Stones set list? There's a challenge for you!

Congrats on your town getting a major act. That is way cool.

Personally, I can no longer get excited about the Rolling Stones. I saw them in the 80's though and it was outstanding!

Aw, c'mon, the man who inspired Jack Sparrow? (Now, Johnny Depp - there's a fine figure of a man...) I'm just excited to be seeing live music again.

Last big gig was the Stranglers. And before that, the Eurythmics Peacetour. So I need to get out more.
