Tristan, you and I are not going to sleep at all the week before D*C, will we? lol.

I need to learn to knit in my sleep!

Serenity, it does not look that way! I don't think I have all that much left to do, then I turn around and there's another project I could whip up real quick-like...and the next thing I know, it's past midnight!
I should really be finished with Mal by the end of the weekend, though. I know exactly what needs to be done, so I won't be floundering around with that one. The mask is going to take a bit of time, as I have never tried gluing leather to a plastic base...getting the cloth to stick right was fun!
Knitting in your sleep...I think that is possible!

Don't feel too bad...with all the leather work I've been doing, it's starting to migrate out of the costume shop into our den, out into the armory, up the stairs...can't stop the leather from getting everywhere!

I lucked out when we found this house...the downstairs/basement is only half-finished, so I have about a 60sq ft armory and a decent-sized costume shop, and there's still enough room downstairs for our bar, den/romper room. I've never had this much space to play in before!

In my old apartment, I had a table that I'd use as my craft table. Had my sewing machine set up, had bins and baskets stored underneath, so it was all tidy, but now that I stay with the grands, I have no space at all. I have one rubbermaid bin of threads and notions that gets shoved in my closet and that's all I have room for. *sigh* I miss the space.

But, it's all good. I am making do with what I have. And my set up is nice because I don't have to move to reach anything and I'm right there in front of the TV. I've about run through my entire DVD collection with all the craftiness.

I one day plan to build a house around my desired craft space...6,000 sq ft of workshops, 110 of living space with a small kitchen! I have a hard enough time keeping track of all my craft stuff now...I can imagine what it would be like in something like that!

lol. That sounds about right!

Well, fortunately for me, I've got a high turn around rate. Crafty stuff I buy doesn't stay put for long. My fabric turns into costumes and my yarn becomes Jayne hats and gets shipped far away. The problem I'm having now is finding space to store my D*C hats and my leftover fabrics. The grands leave on the 26th for an Alaskan Cruise and you better believe the minute they leave the suitcases are coming out and packing is going to begin!!

I'm not worried about you or the other Browncoats I associate with. What I'm worried about is most the unwashed gamers who lurk wherever the games are and can't seem to be bothered to take 20 minutes a day for personal grooming. And then, being crammed into elevators with them.

Or the people that wear the same costume for 3 days straight, so it gets all funky and sweaty.

Those are the people I'm worried about.

Tristan

Been out for a few weeks and finally found time to jump on. Between school starting and going through rehearsals, time has been hard to find. Just wanted to let you know that the rest of the costumes look great. Wish I could see them in person in Atlanta, but that is not an option at this time. Aagin, the pics are great.

Serenity, thank you! I really can't wait to proudly wear that hat!

Here's a Browncoat vs. the world funny for all of you:
My wife knows about the 'Verse, as does my brother and his wife. They don't quite understand my devotion, but they accept it with a smile. My parents, however, have never known me to get this involved in something like this before (cancelled tv show, the people still involved), so they're not quite sure what to think. Top that off with me being 35, and their confusion deepens. I have been a costumer for a long time, and have created many pieces in the past they like. The Browncoats are no exception. So, picture me, in the costume shop with my stepfather, showing off the coats. He likes the coat, thinks I did a good job. Then this question pops out of his mouth, "What's the significance of the brown coat?" ...um...where do I start? He had never seen, let alone heard of Firefly, but from seeing the costumes I have been building, he had an idea it was someting like a Western in space (). I tried to explain to him that the Browncoat was the symbol of the Independents in the 'Verse, a universally recognized badge of people who stood up for what they believed and would not back down even after defeat. I had explained Firefly to him briefly in the past when I first had the idea to build coats to sell, so he had a rough idea. During this conversation, I mentioned that there were something like 20,000 people registered at this site (he knows I belong to the forum...he's not sure why, but he knows). This is the funny part...he says "So, you'll be selling 20,000 of these?"...he's always keeping an eye on my many "business" ventures.

Thought y'all'd get a bit of a kick out of that. I don't think I'll be turning him into a Browncoat, but he at least understands!

lol. You never know! At the end of all things, you might end up selling 20,000 coats!

I feel like I've made that many hats, though it's probably only been something like 30.

I've started knitting hats during my lunch break. I've had lots of people ask me what on earth I'm knitting with that crazy orange yarn. They all know about my Firefly obsession (it's kind of hard to not notice, with my Firefly wallpaper and Serenity keychain and how I'm always listening to the soundtracks and whatnot.

I got tired of trying to explain the hats and now I just tell them that selling these hats is funding my trip to England and they let me alone.

A moment of joy and celebration to follow. First off, my wife bought me a Blue Sun shirt and Finding Serenity! Talk about feeding my habit!
Secondly, I finished the suspenders! Those little brass buckles were a pain to get right...
Let me know what y'all think:
(Oh, yeah, got the belt, too!)

(The shiny piece of brass is there to show the contrast...I brushed the brass with a military gun bluing compound to give it the authentic look)

And, the Blue Sun shirt!

I know Mal would not wear one, but I was happy to have it, so I wore it all night! Is that sad?

you're so crazy. Repainting a pistol. I bought Seryn and I ubercheap fake plastic pistols. They're cute, though.

No knitting in my sleep, but I did wake up this morning with a slightly brilliant idea.

I recently got a hole in my favourite jeans, right at the top where a belt loop and a pocket meet, one of those stress points that gave out. That's what I get for buying cheap jeans. But, they are SO CUTE. I tried darning, I tried patching, nothing was working.

So my idea was thus: the jeans are my favourites because they are embroidered with flowers at the bottom of the left leg. I can embroider. Why don't I copy one of the flowers at the bottom and repeat it at the top where the hole is? I can cover up the hole and reinforce it all in one! I have similar thread colours and started giving it a whirl this morning and I think it might work. We'll see how it turns out. *crosses fingers*

Crazy? No. Just ever-so-slightly obsessed. Besides, the first paint job on my Mal pistol was done in a hurry...I know I can do a better job.

I know you don't like leather, but a leather patch might work to fix the jeans. It's a good material for stress points. But, seeing as you are going to embroider a flower there, the leather patch won't work...so forget I said anything.

If there was other leathery stuff on the jeans, or if I wanted to do leather patchwork design, then that would be cool, but flowers it is!

Finally picked up more hooks and eyes so I can finish my projects.

And a Jade necklace and a pair of teeny throwing knives. I think they might work to fit in my corset, like you suggested. They were only $10. Problem is, I'm not sure how to peace-bind them, they're so small and all that. I'll have to figure it out.

Hello Costume Panickers - though I don't know what you're panicking about, as all your photos look wonderful!

Just wanted to let those interested know that my 'costume' - (in fact, a corset which was made for my wedding, which I mentioned about three threads ago) - was a big success! As was the whole day... And MyWash looked just lovely in his kilt.

The corset was just the right fit, and like nothing else I've worn. It was a big hit with all my relatives - new and old! - and also with the Japanese tourists in Edinburgh (we were married right in the middle of Scotland's capital city). We felt like film stars (Serenity ones) with the amount of photos that were taken of us! I found the perfect skirt to go with the corset too - yellow and floaty, from Monsoon - and shoes that were just exactly the right colour - which was difficult because, if you remember, the outfit was pale yellow and gold, with a tartan corset, not a traditional white dress.

Anyway, just wanted to share the clothes-excitement - and to say that I hope all of your corsets / costumes are equally big hits - though from the above pictures that seems certain!
