Well...now I actually have to say something.

About two years ago I was sitting my my reclyner late at night because I couldn't sleep. As is normal with me my mind warneded. I stated asking myself some "what if" type of questions and eventually came up with a scifi type of story idea. Something that has never happened to me before. Now I am a big SciFi fan from way back. Lost in Space, Star Wars, V, Otherworld, Dr. Who, Space Above and Beyond, most recently Battlestar Galactica and way at the top Firefly. One day a friend of mine and I were having dinner and I started talking about my idea and with his encouragement, well ok proding and shoving, I continued to work with it. Evently I was able to gather my thoughts and write them down.

Then after even more proding and pushing...after all if it was such a good idea why hadn't I seen it on Tv or in a Theater already. I got some other opinions. Now, I am no writer, not even close. Again, with the pushing, I contacted a fanfic writer and showed them my idea. To my surprise they actually liked it. Mind you this was someone who's fan ficition I really enjoyed.

Now, months and months and months later. I really think that it just isn't going to move foward with said person. And this is my last try. Not that I am trying to be mellow dramtic..but I have put as much of myself into this as I can and I am getting to the point where for my own sake I will have to just drop it.

Basicly my mind warndered off to what it might be like a few hundered years form now. When Earth's population becomes too large. There isn't any FTL of anykind. I thought "What if all we have is this system." What would it be like if/when it is pratical to move about our own solar system relativly freely.. Anyway, I took that idea and worked on it for a long time. Now I have come back to the Browncoats, a group of people who I have always identified with. A board who has some of the best fanfiction I have every read to see...

Is there someone here who is interested in collaberting with me? A writer?? If there is then please contact me. Please, please be serious. Please don't just drag me along. This is my baby and I have put a lot into this. I need help raising her or I need to let her go.

you know some writers hold onto their ideas for years and decades before finally getting the chance to bring them to life.

Other than that i have nothing helpful to add, sorry!

Sorry I can't be of any help. I've never tried writing fanfics or any other stories. But I can bump this post up a few notches on the homepage.

I'd love to help, but I'm still trying to get my own ideas afloat and build up some cred.

One idea that may help you write it yourself though is to try to get the plot out in point-form, then just keep adding details to each of the points, mapping out how to get from one to the others. Pretty soon you'll realize that it's mostly written now, and you just have to add dialogue and descriptions.

I have no idea what that is. Can you point me to a good example that I could use as a guide??

Hi Dave

Listen I'm very interested in helping. I'm Ric btw or TheSomnambulist. It's funny I've spent the last year and a half working on my own script too and I know what you're going through. I know the hurdle you've hit and I think I know how to help.

I have two significant tips which managed to help me in not only writing but actually seeing the 'idea' to it's conclusion.

1. Place each scene on post-it notes and place them up on a wall. Write in brief what takes place in that scene. This helps to see when you may need a scene with action/comedy/drama or exposition etc. I found it very useful for working out overall structure.

2. GIVE YOURSELF A DEADLINE!! When I came up with this I managed to complete 3/4 of the script in two weeks! Basically I invited my friends over and said that by the time they arrive I will have a finished script printed and ready for a read through. This worked a treat because I'd come from work and think " Crickey I have to do something tonight or else I won't get it done!" Also it meant that the script was on my mind all day and I'd be thinking things through all day and any ideas that came i'd jott them down for writing later that night.

Now I should let you know I'm no writer. I just had an idea and felt that writing is a human endeavour and hell I'm human so why the heck not! Now I have a finished script that basically I'm preparing to pitch to the BBC. I'm in the luxurious position of having a 103 page pilot that I have to refine down to about 70 pages.

It felt so great to print it out and hold it in my hands! Now I have six further episodes in synopsis form.

Now I'd love to help, maybe even collaborate but may I suggest for the time being you try and keep it your own and maybe I can just drop you ideas rather than help you write it, just because I want it to be as much as yours as possible and also I don't have alot of time and I wouldn't want to let you down. However if you really are struggling then perhaps I could write a few lines of dialogue or a scene or two or suggest events...? What do you think?

Let me know. My email is

Oh one last thing - don't be too hard on yourself if it's not all coming together. Sometimes its just as usefull to not even think about it for a few weeks to let your mind recharge.

Ok

Thanks for the advise. I would do this but have no idea how. What I can use is an example or even a "outline" of what a scene is... Then maybe I can give it a shot. I really have no idea how to even put one together...at all....

Write something down. Write anything down. You don't have to follow any pre-done formula (at least, not until the final version).

Although, if you want some sort of example, there's this (I'm gonna make stuff up, so bear with me):

Introducing the Characters
- Julie
+ short (5'3"); long flowing dress w/embroidery, greens and yellow; gardening in the royal courtyard
- Garet
+ medium height (5'9"); basic tunic, breeches combo, white and brown; atop his horse, ready to go to war

...and so on, and so forth...

But, really, just write something down - what the characters look like, what they do for a living, what they might be thinking or saying, their personalities; what the governments might be like, the culture, etc. You can be really specific, or really general - just write something down, and go from there.

Ok best bet is to download a script I suggest you grab one from here:
http://www.twiztv.com
Namely something that interests you.
Or go to:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom
and
http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scriptsmart/formats.shtml

and choose TELEVISION BBC taped drama and here you can download a PDF of a manuscript that details how to write scenes/dialogue/action/acts etc and shows you how to lay your script out. however this is BBC specific but its a good breakdown of how to structure your script.

Just as a sidenote I find it's easier to have the layout done like so:

Episode story: This one is about a man who has lost his memory.

Then go order of events (Simply outlined):

The Start Man knocks his head
The Middle Doesn't remember his girlfriend
The End knocks head again and remembers

Then add some details:

START:Object falls from above (perhaps a shoe from the flat above) and hits the man on his head knocking him out.

MIDDLE: When he wakes up he's totally disorientated, his girlfriend shows up, and he pretends as though he knows her but fumbles with things she's talking about etc (chance for comedy trying to work out her name etc)

END:Then to conclude his girlfriend thinks he's trying to avoid her so she chucks a shoe at him in anger and knocks him out. He wakes up and says "Hey why did you hit me... etc

This way you slowly build up the script in layers working on things one step at a time.

I often need to have the end worked out so that I at least can move things along to something. Also the general rule is that one PAGE equals one MINUTE of film time.

Hope that helps?
