Well one should learn to aquaint oneself with the governing laws of the country which one is visiting .

You can't complain, your government owes us about a million pounds worth of congestion charge tarriffs. Our diplomats pay you for your toll roads, why can't the richest country in the world return the favor huh, huh?

do you have to pay for each day? each week? each month? do you get a sticker or something that says you've paid to put on the vehicle?
How do they know to charge you? do they take pictures of every license plate that travels in all of Central London?

Sorry for the questions, just not a familiar concept. Something I'd like to understand for when I go driving about in Central London.

There's cameras that scan your number plate, they store the number in a computer database that logs whether you pay or not. You have to pay for each day you're in the charge zone.

Damn straight! Never mind the constantly gridlocked traffic, I just received a second penalty notification.

If you have a car, stay out of London. There's no point, especially considering that once you hit the U.K. & Europe, there are transit systems that actually function well enough to get you from anywhere to anywhere else. Lesson learned.

I have never and hopefully will never drive in London. There are three types of people who do:
Those that have to for work, Taxi drivers, Chauffers etc.
Tourists who don't know any better...
and the clinically insane. Judging by the way people drive I think most fall into this catagory.

well, you can drive in the cc zone after 6pm and before 7am i think, and if you're on a motorbike under a certain size you don't pay either, or if you live in the zone, or whatever.

its £8, which is ridiculous, but considering when it was £5 it was still cheaper than getting the tube, i suppose they did have to raise it.

but if you're coming as a tourist, theres really no point to bringing a car at all, unless you want to take a trip to sample the worlds biggest carpark - the delightful m25 ringroad around london, where you travel so slow i think you often slip into negative time, or are, as previously mentioned, clinically insane.

off peak day tickets for the tube are still cheap enough, though not if Ken has his way and double's cash fares or whatever grand plot he's hatching to force people to use oyster cards, and to be honest, comfy pair of boots and you can often walk to most places - emphasis on the confy - just get a really good map, and never rely on Sean to take you anywhere, he likes his scenic routes he does.

Sorry, did somebody order a wakeup call?

Just remember, London was even more congested before the charge came in.

The tube is nicer than the New York subway plus our map is a work of art. We depend on our public transport really.

possibly.

(about the map art thing)

I know it looked like a big pile of multi-coloured spagettii, until some woman had the bright spark idea of ignoring actual geography and setting it out in a grid.

I love it when people just throw out entire concepts.

Actually it was an Underground employee called Harry Beck who came up with it in his spare time. His bosses were pretty sceptical, only published it as a small leaflet but it was a runaway success.

Here's what zone 1 would look like if it was done geographically:

And of course the map became a work of art when The Great Bear was produced by Simon Patterson in 1992, replacing the station names with artists, politicians, comedians and others.

Kendal Mint cake, I remember it well (although I've never eaten it). I used to have this friend at school who was obsessed (OBSESSED I tell you!) with the idea of surviving an apocolypting war. His brother was the same way, he once said to me:
"I spent £50 on a gas mask, some of those jokers spend that much on Lunch, but if someone uses Sarin gas on the Underground here who do you think would've spent their money better?"

They had NBC suits at home, that was disturbing.

But anyway apparrently Kendal Mint cake was excellent food to stock up on if you wanted to survive a nuclear war. Tinned food is also good.
