Rather ambitious. Perhaps too ambitious for a single game. I wasn't planning on having to oversee each trade. I was thinking more of a Rise of Nations system, you set up a trade route, decide what is to be traded and for what then let the caravans sort themselves out. In AoE3 there's a sort of trade route system, on the map is a trade route that subsequent research converts from horse and cart to stage coach and finally train. You can set the trade posts that you capture along the route to collect either Food, Wood, Coin or Experience Points (for upgrading your home city) each time the trade cart/coach/train passes you collect a quantity of that resource. I was thinking of a system more like that.

Very true.

Possibly, though the AI helpers would be aimed specifically at helping with mundane tasks only, ensuring a steady supply of resources and making sure sustainable resources are sustained. At the maximum limit to their abillities I'd probably let a Mayor build city buildings that it's city doesn't have as long as it doesn't break a budget it's been given, or a General build military units with similar criteria. Also I'd have the player deciding who to attack and where, and the General would just ensure that all troops were engaged in battle, perhaps setup field hospitals behind the fighting. Generally just the simple mundane click fest tasks, nothing in the realm of strategy/tactics or real decision making.

Because a body in motion remains in motion until it hits something, with kinetic force resulting from mass and velocity.

It's less being "crushed" than being caught between moving and unmoving object.

Well some of the stuff could take sometime, plus the more there is in there, the larger the code base. To get large maps and large numbers of units the code is going to have to be fairly tight and memory requirements kept to a minimum. The larger the game, the more features, the harder that becomes.

Okay, now I see. I've been thinking about this and come up with this idea:
Rather than a city adding directly to the Nations influence, cities are used to 'capture' regions. Each region can trade with other regions, but cities can only trade with other cities within it's region. That way as the civilisation grows the number of entities that can trade with each other stay relativly low. Then if you wish you could have one region that concentrates on Farming, another on logging, mining etc.

Can you believe that yesterday morning I decided I wanted to make apple dumplings instead of a pie? ....Several hours later I've got 12 lovely little dumplings ready to go in the oven, but the damned thing won't heat up above 250F. I had to pack everything up and take it to my aunt's. Some of the sauce spilled in my car on the way, big mess!

But, in the end, they turned out very good. Everything was very tasty this year. There was a scrumptious pumpkin cheesecake.

I thought I was going to have to send my grandfather to his room, though. First he kept trying to snitch my raw dough for the dumplings (ew) and then he kept trying to eat the veggies I had cut up for my curry. I had to keep kicking him out of the kitchen!

I was always convinced that there was always one member of the family at every gathering elected purley to annoy the cook. Thats their mission for the day, one they usually fulfill with glee.

In our family that was usually my grandad, now its my brother or my uncle - i'm wondering if its not some kind of sacred pact passed down through the males.

in our house we always had the dogs as well - they had their own secret pact - the idea was to lie in the door ways leading from the kitchen to the dining room (in our old house there were conveniently two - one for each dog, now, theres only one, so the three of them take it in turns) in the hope that one at least would trip the unwary person carrying the food through.

then at meal time a strict rotation would be adhered to ensuring that each person at the table would be given ample opportunity to pass town tidbits.

My mum also used to buy dry roasted peanuts every year for me until she realised i was only sucking the flavouring off then passing the nuts down to the dog.

Man was the dog dissapointed at that.

I have a luv/hate relationship to the peanut family. I luvs to eat 'em, but my body has this allergic reaction to 'em that causes... acne. Oh well. Relative to the many human miseries that's a lame one, so I can deal.

Seeing that you're posting, Seryn, suggests that you're feeling better. And yay! for that.

Hermes, eh? Hmmmm. I haven't donned a toga in a party -- or any other -- environment in, oh, a quarter century. All of a sudden I'm really feeling my age.

Got me a camera, though.

As for 'puter games, I did phase through an addiction to Civilization, though I never got past Civ 2. Kinda my roundabout way of saying that I'd be intrigued to beta S's game, but fear I lack the skills to provide decent feedback. Still, I wonder if there wouldn't be an appropriate Civ-ish type game that works in the Serenifly 'verse... or would that be too huge an undertaking, what with the many colonised planets and moons?

Hehe. So is done and dusted a common phrase there? It's the name of the company that has put together Marillion's more recent DVDs. I think they made the Guinness book of records at the Marillion Weekend a couple of years back. Marillion did their Friday night Concert which was digitally recorded and being processed as the show continued.. The DVD was available that Sunday as people left the Weekend. I have it, and it's very well done. Doesn't seem cheap or rushed at all.

yup, common phrase, where i am anyway.

you know thats really neat - they should get them to do dvd of the panels n stuff (though i was looking at some clips of the panels on you tube today, abart from the overall bad quality, they wern't quite as funny as i remembered. I mean funny (Alan reading Wash's eulogy was a scream i'm sure, but you couldn't hear a word) but theres definitly something to be said for the effect sitting in a room with nigh on two thousand vaguely hysterical people has on you.

can't wait for next year!

Isn't sanity really a one trick pony, anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy...ooh hoo hoo hoo... the skys the limit!

Do you want a meringue top, or would you rather I did a whipped cream with cinnamon thing?

Traditionally you would top it with whipped cream if you topped it at all. The pie itself has all the flavor bases covered though so that would be optional. And believe it or not I did respond to this on wednesday except the server flaked and then I had to leave my net connection behind to travel dad's way. So hope everybody's tryptophan day was as pleasant as mine and that only minor episodes of indigestion manifested themselves.

Yes I enjoy the panels and I enjoy being rather close, which is why I do lots of waiting. I'm glad everyone else enjoyed that too. It's nice to have a large group up close. A panel DVD, if done professionally, would be nice, but to include all the panels, it wouldn't be available at the end of the weekend. Would be a nice thing to have though.
Looking forward to next year too, Time to make the hotel reservations and order the membership. So, just so I'll know.. are the arrangements going to be the same? Should I assume Ath, LMD, and Citizen are returning and up for sharing the room?
Input guys?

LMD, the tryptophan is in the turkey, makes you sleepy. I don't think it's in the ham. But I guess one could eat enough ham to get sleepy anyway. I'm not too big on ham. I'm mostly focused on fowl right now.
