How about a short summary so folks don't have to read back to the other thread.

ArtCat is working on "chainmail" Tristan is working on vest and overcoat.
Tristan has a website for some good Browncoat type pants if needed, Hey T, wanna post that site again, please.
Tristan has also been posting Ebay links for the guns the Independents use. For those that might have an issue with airlines, Tristan and RiverIsMyGoddess have graciously offered to be our store house since they will be driving to D*C and will bring the guns with them.
We're looking to possibly dress "clean" like before the Independents started losing but you can take that as a suggestion.
There was some talk about helmets but since I'll be trying to recreate Zoe's costume I didn't pay that part no mind, so if someone else can summarize that, I'd take it as a kindness.

That's the really short version, anyone can feel free to elaborate.

I aim to misbehave!

Thank you, FFG! Organization is not one of my strongpoints, obviously.

The link to the pants:
http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=CM83&type=store&catego
ry=3930

These are the pants I used for my Mal costume...all that needs to be done is a bit of hemming and adding the stripe down the side. You don't have to use these pants, but they are the closest I have been able to find in a decent price-range.

The helmets I believe we finally decided on are US M1 helmets with liners. Galvanized (or rough-looking) finish.

I am working on a version of the cloth coats the soldiers wore, as well as the red vest all of them had on. I am planning on making the patterns available, but I will also offer to make these for sale...sort of a "Independent's Package" deal...vest and coat for one price.

As for patches, CMH gave us this link:
http://mysite.verizon.net/resp06h7/

ArtCat is working on recreating the mail sleeves using a knitting pattern. I am dying to see how they turn out!

The gun we seem to have settled on is the H&K G36C. It appears that the guns in the series are actually something called CA36 (it has a higher sight rail than the G36), but as the CA36 runs about $350.00, and the G36 runs anywhere from $13-$40 for the airsoft versions, we have decided to go with those. Sister gave us a link to www.airsplat.com, which has just the right one:
http://www.airsplat.com/itemdesc.asp?CartId={C70A1A45-9E39-4CFE-BDB3-D
C8609FB28EVEREST1E}&ic=AR%2DG36%2D366&eq=&Tp
=
$17.95 plus shipping.
I am planning on getting several of these guns, and will be bringing them to D*C, especially for those of you outside the US to use if you want to.

I think that's most of the stuff from the last thread compacted into one posting. If there is anything I missed, please let me know!

Oh and I beg to differ about your organizational skills. You've already organized several Browncoats into a Brigade now haven't you?

rikm; yeah, this is the "Independent Army Brigade" so I'd have to ask "why" as well.
On another note for the ladies who are not as 'sewingly-gifted' on supply run to the local wally-world supercenter this morning found some tan pants w/black stripe down the side for $15... they are Danskins (sorry)..but tucked inside a boot I think they'd be okay. I ordered my airsoft rifle from airsplat and will let ya know how it is once I get it around the 8th. Cheers..keep voting.

ok chainmail update, so far so good it looks chainmail like, and similar to the screencaps, having trouble getting hte cording dark enough though, will try to redye or spray paint after i finish a sleeve.
For anyone else trying it, I used a dye in teh walmart fabric section, it is not so great, my cord came out a lovely light silver.
I have 3 inches knit so far, I will post a pic when I get a bit farther along.

Are these the walmart pants you were talking about? http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5184637

I really like those fingerless gloves that Mal has on in one of those pictures on the previous thread - I will look around the op shops here in Melbourne to see if I can either find something like them or something that can be modified too... or did this already get discussed...? I got a little lost with all the 'gun talk'...

Those fingerless gloves they use are almost exactly identical to the ones I use in Revolutionary war re-enacting. I also have a modern pair of fingerless gloves that have a fold-back mitten portion. Something similar shouldn't be too hard to come by.

my first instinct is no the stripe is too wide, and the waist is all wrong, however, if you wore a browncoat over it and closed it might work, I am not sure I think I may go to Walmart on my lunchbreak and have a closer look.

Morning, all!

ArtCat, I am dying to see how the 'experiment' works! Thank you again for tackling this project.

I do not believe I ever saw any of the soliders wearing a sidearm. I could be wrong, and someone please correct me if so. I know Mal was supposed to have gotten his pistol during the war, but so far I have not been able to see him wearing it.

Gloves...no, we had not discussed those yet. Thanks, Magda! I'll have to start looking more closely for those, too!

CMH, we have a local surplus store...I'll check there to see what they have for gloves.

Sister, I looked at those pants, too, and I agree with ArtCat. They could work, but not exactly.

I have started to pattern my old trenchcoat during a lull in costuming (ok, I took a day off!) and I'll be working on modifying it over the next few weeks. The red vest will be next. I'm trying to find a bunch of good, close pictures of them, especially to figure out the front closures.

Tristan: in "Firefly" the official companion vol. one; pages 14-15...they describe the browncoats uniforms/vests as having "Asian closures"...this was for the battle of Serenity valley and probably farther into the war than you are aiming for but it might help some. Good drawing of the 'mail' sleeves, tho; showing them attached to the arms w/straps.

The 'Asian closures' look almost like a type of fastner you find on large handbags (!) a snap latch with a foldover closure. I suspect you of knowing the ins and outs of every craft store in your state, but that was my first thought on seeing the close-up.

Lt. Lost reporting for duty!

this should be WAY comfier than that reaversuit i wore last year

(in response to the sidearm question most infantrymen dont have one, officers, special forces and snipers generally do as they usually serve to mark rank rather than being useful on the battlefield)

in regards to the Capn's submachine gun in The Message given its screentime you could probably substitute a MP5 PDW or MP5K for the UMP (the airsoft mp5s are cheaper than the UMP)

Thanks for the info on the sidearms. I knew that was a fact for most modern-day armies, but I did not know how it applied to the 'Verse.
I think I am going to stick with the G36 for uniformity's sake.

Military Police and Security Forces carry sidearms instead of rifles or SMG's while off-duty in war-zones. The way that the standards are actually written, all military party must be armed in a war zone unless they're performing a specific function where it would interfere. The actual reason you'll usually see such people with small arms is because they don't want to be burdened with a full sized rifle when they're not on duty.

Regardless, this would be a cool addition to the uniform if there were some sort of guidelines set to it. I have to confess, I've been toying with the idea of something beyond just the ordinary Browncoat grunt myself. I conjure up images of Independent Army Cavalry (Armored, Air, and others) and special forces groups in my mind. But I've been mostly trying to deviate from it. Every time I've made a plan for a uniform group in the past it gets ruined by everyone wanting to do their own thing, and in the end no one's able to actually work together because of it.

CMH, that is what I was afraid would happen in this case...that's why I tried to identify the two different "types" that I saw (on the last thread). But, I also know that being a Browncoat is being an independent soul, so all of this stuff is more like guidlines. I'd love to have a bunch of people look the same, but I'd be just as happy to have a few things in common among them...weapons, helmets, etc. I think RIMG is planning on being a medic version (beer and cookies in the packs!) so other things would not be a miss at all!

Hey Tristan, I was just looking at the "Type A" and "Type B" uniforms on the last thread. It would appear that anyone ranked Sargent or above wears the long coat and that anyone below gets the smock, wouldn't it? The only questionable one I see to that would be the first picture you posted where you're identifying type A and type B uniforms. I don't know who that is in the picture, but I think it could be assumed that it's either an officer or an NCO. What do you think?

I honestly can't see all that many, which is not to say that you're incorrect, more so than I just can't seem to distinguish between a browncoat and a burlap sack.

If there really are more long coats than short, then you're certainly right about it not making sense. A top heavy chain of command never works, and it would have just made more sense to anyone (including Joss) to not let the number of NCO's and officers outnumber the enlisted.

Course, I could also make up a feasible but still BS excuse: the NCO's and officers are veterans and better trained, most of the enlisted might be dead (You and your gorram beans, Tracey!). The only reason I brought it up in the first place is because I wasn't sure what other reason there would be to give one person a coat and another a smock. It's just been the way of all militaries that if you don't have enough of a quality item/commodity for the entire army, you just give it out to the higher ranked.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Pants definitely look right Tristan. Thanks for the link. Also thanks to Sister for the link to the G36. I agree that the CA36 does look more like the weapon that Mal & Zoe are carrying in the pilot "Serenity", but with a price tag of over $300.00 I think we can all agree that the G36 at a cost of around $20.00 is a much easier option on everyone.

I am getting pretty excited about the IAB for Dragon Con next year.

BABYWITHTHEPOWER

I own webspace on homestead that I rarely use. As time goes on if you guys would like a website for updates, I'd be willing to do it. Just let me know.

Not 100% I'll actually be able to go. Gonna plan my vacation time out and see what I come up with. I plan on making the 18 hour trek down there in my car, so I don't need to worry about flying, though that may change. Once I know for sure, I'll be trying to get a roomate(s) as well to offset the cost (I have no problem sleeping on the floor/in the bathtub if need be).

Okay, and some catch up questions. Tristan, what do you think the vest is going to run?

I'm taking a chainmail class and should be able to make sleeves of my own. Is this okay or would you rather everyone have the knitted ones?

I'm not a fan of the style of pants they use in the show, favoring the looser, more versatile pant style that the US Army uses. I have a pair of tan ones that I was planning on using, but I know we'd like a level of uniformity so I wanted to know if this would be a problem.

And finally, has anyone shown any interest in being an Independent Sniper (besides me that is)?

RIVERISMYGODDESS

mornin Brigade.

I have a bundle of catching up to do, as I have not been on the site since Wednesday. I may not even bother with it, due to work and stuff.

I am so glad that our numbers are growing, and I hope to see more and more Browncoats join as D*C gets closer (275 more days until Thursday!).

As for the various uniform parts, I suppose I just need to know prices for everything, and I also suppose that the people making them will need to know sizes of some type. Just let me know and I will provide whatever is needed.

Tristan - the bag only holds a 6-pack? I may have to carry a couple of them, or keep working on finding something to make the metal box backpack out of.

TRISTAN

Morning, all!
BrownCoat1, I am also quite excited about this, too! 200-something days to go...

BWTP, thanks for the webspace offer! May end up taking you up on that one of these days.
As far as uniformity goes, I'd like us to look similar...we don't have to all be exact, but things like the weapons, vests, and helmets at least should be really close. I will be offering the vest OR the vest pattern to anyone that wants it...as far as cost on those, I am not too sure yet. We're not talking $100 or anything, probably between $25 and $40 at the most. I am still not sure about the coats, either. I have a trenchcoat I am eyeballing for a pattern, but I have not yet had time to do anything with it.
Chain mail...if you want to wear real mail sleeves, knock yourself out! I make mail also, but the weight vs. the time to make it pushed me towards the knitted sleeves.
If the pants look close, there should not be a problem. I will be using my Mal pants from last year.
Oh, the G36 also comes in a sniper version! Check ebay, type in G36 and look for that version. I think they run about the same price as the others. Or, check Sister's link to airsplat.com.

Morning, RIMG! Good to see you back!
Well, I say it only holds a six-pack...I have not yet fully tested that yet. Might have to do some field research!

That sounds like it could me fun. Along those lines, I brewed my Irish Red last night, should be ready early to mid January, and I can send you a few, or maybe make a road trip up there to hand-deliver them.

I get paid this week, and I plan to go ahead and buy one of the guns. I wouldn't mind a pattern for the vest, though my skills with a needle are barely rudimentary.
