Continuation of this thread:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=11&t=25503&m=417376#417376

Discussion thread for those interested in marching at D*C as an Independent Soldier. Please read the previous two threads before posting if you are new to this. Thank you, and we hope to have many more people involved!

We have discussed many things so far, and I will try to get them all in this first post.

The name, first off...the 76th was mentioned by Zoe in a deleted scene from the pilot episode, so I thought it would be a good Brigade designation, and it has been accepted by everyone who had an opinion on it. BabyWithThePower has designed some wonderful patches, and we are trying to decide which to use. He is also in contact with a company that will create these for us.
This is from him on the last thread.
Quote:

I'm glad you like them. I'll let everyone know what kind of deal I can work out with the patch place. At worst, I'm thinking $2 a patch. Once I send chunks of them to the contributors, you can charge whatever you want for them, but once we decide on a quantity and what everybody's going to help offset for me, than just tell me how much you can/want to contribute and you'll get the equivalent amount of patches.

ArtCat is doing a wonderful job with the knitted chainmail sleeves:

And some may be building actual mail sleeves...which will look very good!

I have thrown together a "first-draft" of the red vests worn by the soldiers, but there is still a bit of debate as to the stripes.

Let's see...the main gun for the average soldier will be the H&K G36 airsoft version, which can be found on ebay, or on www.airsplat.com, a link provided by Sister. The prices are quite reasonable, even with shipping.

I know I am missing a lot. Please feel free to correct me or carry your own contributions forward.

I am very pleased with the response to this, and happy that so many of you are interested in marching as Independents, too! Thank you all!

Please tell me that if you pay the $20 you can get the signature AND take a picture with them. It would kinda suck to have an either/or situation.

Yes, for $20 you get a signature (and a picture if you didn't bring anything to sign) and a chance to take a pic with them. I have pics with the two from this year (Summer and Alan) on my MySpace ( http://www.myspace.com/supernova_412 ) and I keep meaning to scan in the autographs but I left them at my mom's house over Thanksgiving and can't get them back until Christmas. :\

I'm moving this forward from the last thread, too. I know little of the layout of the military hierarchy, and put those decisions in the hands of the military people on this board.
CMH had this to say after my last post:
Quote:

Well for one thing, modern military doesn't wear a Brigade patch: They were a Division patch. Not sure how/if this will matter to anyone, because unless the word "Brigade" was used specifically we could easily assume that all references to the 76th was a reference to a Division number.

However, if we're dead set on Brigade, I would suggest to Babywiththepower that you look up the word "Regiment", the Chinese Military equivalent of Brigade.

I'll put forth for my own vote that we stick with having the patch represent our Division, and that we choose a Company of a Battalion of a Brigade of the 76th Division to represent. If this is cool with you Tristan, I could write up all of the nomenclature on it, give us a real identity. I think it's pretty much decided that you'd be the Company Commander, most likely making you a Captain (imagine that?). You could assign a First Sargeant and an XO of Lieutenant rank.

CMH, thank you for all that. I have no idea how many people we will actually have marching...will that impact any of the ideas you have as far as any of this goes?
Oh, and as far as being Captain...remember that Lieutenant from The Message? The one who "lost his arms?"...yeah, that would probably be me. I was not planning on being in "charge" of anything other than trying to organize interested people. Thank you for the vote of confidence, though!

BWTP, those are some shiny patches. I prefer the oval or circular design to the hexagon one, but that is just me. The triangular one is nice, but may be too much since the Independent patch is already a triangle. Don't much care for the square. I'll gladly buy several when they are made (or in advance if need be) to insure I can get them in time to sew on & get the numbers needed to place the patch order.

Artcat, the chainmail sleeves look great so far.

I figure I'll move this foward as well:

I don't know how your unit worked, but I wore my Battalion patch in my sleeve (for awhile) and my Batallion crest on my beret. We changed to wearing the Group patch (for those that don't know Group is equvalent to Brigade). The only people that wore a Division patch were the ones assigned to the Division. I know it was different in units like the 1st AD, but it wasn't a blanket rule across the board. Pleanty of Battalions and Brigades had patches.

And to move on completely form the last thread:

What MOS were you? Until I got to Bragg, it was Battalion crest on beret, and Brigade patches on the sleeve only if you'd been deployed with them.

EDIT: Okay, we've got this mostly worked through. I never wore a group patch because I wore a group flash instead. In the end, I guess we could be designated as the 76th Brigade, Battalion or Division, but I'll officially change my vote to Battalion since A) That's the kanji that BWTP has and B) That's probably the closest unit size that we'll have. We can all be part of (X) Company, 76th Infantry Battalion.

Well, they got back to me faster than expected. Here's the prices based on the Hexagon patch (i needed to pick one to send them, doesn't mean it's the one we're going with) it was the smallest in size and therefore the cheapest.

Here's what the prices are:

Quote:

Qty. 100
3" Custom Embroidered Patches - $ 1.86 each
100% Embroidery
FREE – Artwork and revisions
FREE – Setup
FREE – UPS or DHL International Air Shipping
100% - On time delivery Guarantee
100% - Product Satisfaction Guarantee
100% - Price match Guarantee
(10) day production

Total Delivered $ 186.00

Qty. 200 3"
Custom Embroidered Patches - $ 1.25 each
100% Embroidery
FREE – Artwork and revisions
FREE – Setup
FREE – UPS or DHL International Air Shipping
100% - On time delivery Guarantee
100% - Product Satisfaction Guarantee
100% - Price match Guarantee
(10) day production

Total Delivered $ 250.00

Once you have approved your design, we will deliver your custom embroidered patches to you within 14 days.

So, it doesn't look too bad, and if we get enough people interested in them, we can order more for a reduction. Hell, 200 I think we could easily unload and it's double the patches for 34% more dough. Something to think about.

Here's a thought too, something we can work on once we know which BDHs are going to be at the Con, but if we could talk them into a group shot with all of us in full gear, we could take the pic, frame it with one of our patches and a brass plaque with something nice on it and send it to Joss. I'm a sentimental sod, so I think it's a good idea, even if it's just us sans BDHs. Something else to think about.

Tristan; had a thought on the "Asian" closures.. Don't know if this is overstepping...so please forgive me if it is - What about contacting the original costume designer? She does have a "contact me" space under one of the market threads...if it wouldn't be too much of an imposition perhaps she'd send us a picture of what she used and where she got them? Just a thought; and I'd volunteer to try and reach her.
Let me know.

Not really, not matter how small it gets we can always just claim to be a smaller element of whatever unit size we're representing. Mostly we just need to get it strait if the 76th's a Brigade or Battalion, since BWTP and I concluded that it doesn't actually need to represent a division. Either one of those would work fine.

The nice thing is too that they garuntee the patches to arrive in 14days. So it's not like i have to order them now to garuntee them to arrive by D*C. The way it work is once I send them a reply to the email I sent, they will have one of their graphic artists create my design and
email me a full color proof to review.

Once I agree to that proof (I would of course post it here for you all to help me decide if it's right) they will go into production and viola, 14 days later we got ourselves an official patch.

Sister, that is a great idea...no imposition at all! As far as I can see, the vests do not have closures, though, and that is what is bugging me. I went through the flashback scenes last night, and have been looking at screencaps online this morning, and I do not see any closures. Tracey's was wide open, and it looks like all the rest are just held in place by the coat, belts, or whatever else they had wrapped around them. If you would like to contact her, that would be wonderful!

CMH, I will again bow to the knowledge of the military. Just let us know what y'all decide.

Well it's the one I submitted, so I think so. Unless there is a demand for something different. Supprisingly I just recieved another email and they went ahead and rendered the patch. This is a what the patch will look like stitched (rough, but an idea):

On whatever one we decide, I will ask that the outer stitching be green as well if possible, unless you all want it black.

I like it, though I would vote for the black edging, from an artistic standpoint it anchors the kanji and makes the kanji "pop" a bit, with green edging the kanji gets kinda lost in the composition.

The first gun has arrived. I had it shipped to my brother, so he has been playing with it for awhile. He did send me some pictures, so check them out:

-EDIT-
He says it feels like plastic, but that's because it is plastic, but it has a nice heft. He also says the shoulder strap is great if we are five-year olds, so we may have to find or build proper straps. That should not be a problem.

Well, it sounds like ya'll might be interested in some special lanyards! Hubby and I'll work on a list of possible phrases for everyone to vote on. If anyone else has an idea, we'll happily add it to the list.

Tristan, your gun looks brown, is that what color that style of gun is supposed to be? If not, you can paint it. (Hubby painted a toy pistol to look more like a metallic gun for a friend's Samauri Cowboy costume.) Flat black might be a good look for it. (All hail the mighty Can Of Krylon!)

My 2 thoughts about this (ongoing) thread:

1) You guys are gonna look "wicked awesome" (too much Family Guy. Heh.).
2) I'm sorry, the 501st are who again? LMAO...We don't need no stinkin' Storm Troopers!

Don't mean to make waves, but why are we worrying so much about whether a brigade patch is worn now when we are discussing a fictional unit from 500 years in the future? Lot of things could have changed in military doctrine from the present to the time in the future when the Independents become an army.

I say we stick with brigade and move forward. If the characters in the patch don't translate to brigade, why bother with them at all. Just go with the star and the unit number.

I like the look of the hexagonal patches. This is partly due to the fact that it'll cover a similar area to a circular one of the same size. "Why is this important?" I hear the hecklers asking.

Simple, it means that with a velcro backing to attach the patch to a shirt/jacket, I can swap between my browncoat and SGC outfits in a hurry if needed (depending on who I'm hanging around with at the time).

mornin' troops.

Tristan, the gun looks great, and I think the brown color is from glare (at least it appears that way to me). I get paid tonight so I might go ahead and order mine as well.

As has been stated, I am in for patches and for lanyards, and I had another idea yesterday. In honor of this newly-created unit (not sure what to call it), I was thinking of putting the wonderful design of the patch onto a label for the beer I will be making, along with a red cross or the words 'First Aid' or some clever name I haven't created yet. I have never labeled my beer, so I need to look into that for size and other specifications.

Morning, all!

RIKMJWSL777, with all due respect, this is the last thread you'd be wanting to ask where to find an Alliance sword. I suggest trying your search engine or starting another thread.

Nico...I can't really argue with that logic. I can see you walking around D*C, though, quickly replacing patches as you move through fandoms!

RIMG, that would be a wonderful honor, ad far as labeling the beer goes! The first Independent Army Brigade with it's own beer! Whoo-hoo!

No waves made. Frankly it doesn't matter, but it's all a matter of preference. Also, you don't see any unit patches on any of the soldiers in the flashbacks other than the triangle one Mal pulls of the dead LT. We're all assuming that's the 'Independent Patch', but in all honesty, it may be the patch of the 57th Overlanders.

I personally prefer the idea of wearing the Battalion patch because as a Bn we could be one of the Bn's that make up the "Balls and Bayonets" Brigade (the 57th) and therefore be in Mal's unit, even if under him. Here's what I mean:

Quote:

Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds is stationed on Hera and in command of thirty-odd grunts, including Zoe Alleyne. Five days into the battle, there are so many officers dead that he commands two thousand, and he keeps all of them together, fighting, and sane. The Browncoats are forced to pile up the bodies of fellow soldiers and friends to build a wall because they have no cover, while blood just keeps pouring out of them. The survivors slip in it half the time, finding out that "bloodbath" is not just a figure of speech.

[Firefly DVD and website. In the same deleted scene, Zoe tells Simon about the role she and Mal played in the battle, though they "didn't turn the tide of glorious history."]

So it's a very real possability that the BDH himself will lead us in the Battle of Serenity Valley.

BWTP, I like that concept! Huh, so he will lead us after all, it seems. Shiny!
I say we stick with the design we have. One thing I am confused about, though...will we be wearing both the Independents' patch on one sleeve and ours on the other, or...how does that work?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I really like that idea. We could always expand later. Being a battalion would work for now. It's not like we are as big now as the 501st Legion. If we ever do get bigger, we can always add new units.

We will be bigger than the 501st! We must! We shall blanket the streets with wave upon wave of browncoat-ed Independents! They will have to increase the length of the parade just to accomodate us! They will stand in awe of the ordered (well, maybe) ranks of proud holders-of-the-line! And we shall march proudly!
*ahem*

Sorry, got a bit carried away. I may need to lay off the coffee for a bit...

SHINYHAPPYKLIN

This is sounding really, really shiny...I love the knitted chain mail sleeves! What a great idea!

I've now got patches available online, $4/ea; $3/ea for 4-9; $2/ea for 10+. So if you don't think you want to get several hundred of them, I've got them in stock, ready to go. These are the new ones with the blue star, as in the Firefly Companion.

Looking forward to joining up!

shinyhappyklin, glad to have you! Thank you about the patches! We do have a design we are trying to decide on, and I am still not sure if we are wearing both of them. I am defering decisions like that to the military and ex-military amongst us. It's been a bit quiet today.

Well, the way the modern US Army does it is that you wear your unit patch on the left sleeve, and if deployed or serving overseas the American flag on the other. If you deploy to a combat zone you wear the unit you're deploying with on the right shoulder under the American flag.

I don't know if we'd want to do one or both. I'm thinking just the one, but I'm up for either. I've already got the triangle patch.

I'm ging to march with you guys , but as a companion because I can't give up that dream of all the pretty clothes.
But I love the picture of Mal/Nathan leading the troops.
Maybe someone could try to pass this info on to our captain or any other of cast that might attend.Who knows right ?

SISTER

I would also defer to those among us who know more about the military; but if I could vote; I'd have us wear both; our 76th...(on the left sleeve as per BWTP)...and the triangle patch from Serenity on the right. (Kinda like a flag?) dunno...Oh, and I'm with Tristan in that we should blanket the streets...conscripting ANYONE at D*C w/tan pants to march with us...heh heh.
