Sorry about that BC1, I've only been getting about half of my PMs it seems, I know Tristan has sent me at least one I haven't gotten as well. I may have gotten it, but with all the emails I've been getting regarding the 76th, it may have gotten lost in the shuffle. You're officially updated.

The next few weeks are going to be very hectic for me, it being the holidays and all, so I wouldn't expect any major updates to the site before the 1st of the year. I ask that all of you please be patient with me, and I will get everything in there when I can.

Not a problem BWTP. I figured you were most likely getting inundated w/ emails. Thanks for updating me in the roster. Only one small gripe. I hate to bring it up, but my name does not have and "S" at the end. Not a big deal, fix it when you have time. No rush.

Name: Richard
Rank: Private
MOS: Sniper (propose)
Home World: Persephone

All the leverge fun we'll have with globally substituting 'browncoat' for 'sotuhern' or 'rebel'. Just as I paly a "Northere man of Sourthern sympathies" in my Confederate ACW impression, I exepect to play an "Core resident of Indepdendent tendencies" in this.

USMCHELLRAISER, thanks for the excellent detail on what a real army is like. Those of us who merely read about and play solider will always miss some details.

Given the rought analogy Whedon hypothecates between Browncoats and Butternuts, would an Idependent army be organized the same way as Alliance? Would an Indepdndent batallion more resemble a collection of militia companies, more like the way the CSA raised regiments early in the conflict?

Well, only way to know for sure is to ask Joss. That being said, we know that the book which triggered this whole shiny thing was Joss' reading about the Civil War in The Killer Angels. Between that, and the descriptions of the 'Verse scattered tween the varied "companion" books and the RPG, I'd say the analogy is perfectly apt.

Thinking a little further? The Independent Worlds were the less developed ones. Less resources, less tech, less money, less industrial base. Independent forces are portrayed in the Verse as mostly light infantry, and that squares well with what the Independents could afford. Rifles, anti-roller... ahem, anti-armor weapons that a soldier could carry, machine guns. It's possible that the Independents didn't even have a lot of artillery, and that infantry carried laser designators to target high-value Alliance targets for the few missiles or orbital KKWs available to the Independent general defending a planet.

Following CSA army models is probably not a bad way to build portrayals which match the 'Verse That Is in the DVDs. *twinkle* For example, I've applied for scout/sniper with the 76th. Scouts and skirmishers seem to fit the tone better than talking about "recon teams" -- which would be closer to current military practice.

YMMV, of course... but we Independents of the 76th?

Motivated, proud, but outgunned and out-supplied.

Sounds like what Joss described; yep.

Hi BWTP

Well, I was going to use Zoe's maiden name since I was going to go as Zoe but I have been persuaded to abandon that idea for marching with the group, so I will come up with something and let you know.

Thanks for the detailed reply.
We are a bandd of KNOWLEDGEABLE brothers, that much is evident.

Also, for the exact location of CSA butternet pants with optional infantry Sargeant's strip, see

http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg14.htm

amd find the text
"STANDARD INFANTRY TROUSERS"

and for the NCO stripe, the text
"STRIPE OR PIPING "

'butternet' is extra (!!) so the cost of butter NCO all wool pants with the regulation 1" wide stripe will be $ $125. (65+30+30) - and you'll have to wear drawers underneath or your legs will itch!

Turning back to organization;
Given that Independents would be raised local to a particular location, I'd expect that you would first see sharpshooter detachments first organized informally within the batallion (regiment) and then gathered within the brigade, which is what happens in the Army of Northern Virginia. In contrast, the US service had two entirely independent batallions of United States Sharp Shooters (USSS) with special uniforms (dark green with black rubber buttons) and weapons (Sharps breech loading rifles).

So, let us suppose the 76th is an element of the 57th Brigade. The sharpshooters might be cathered into a 'converged' battalion during an engaement, then returned to their parent battalions.

I'd also note that unlike current practice, the Indy batallions have their own identity - they are 1/57, but more like the regiments in a Civil War brigade. As you all may remember, all regiments in a CS brigade would nearly always be from the same 'state' - I suppose that would be analagous to 'planet' in our 'Verse.

I'd speculate that the Alliance would be much more like the US army of WWII - 'vanilla legions'.
Indies are 'fire and manuever',
Alies are 'mass and blast'
et al.

This is way too much fun and is keeping me from work.

Oh well, another time consuming vice is born.

Regards,

Q (I suppose this will be my call sign)

You might be getting us a bit ahead of ourselves, though!
I am not trying to be an ass about this, but would you mind moving this post to the actual 76th thread? This one is for Roll Call info, and a lot more people will see this over there...and get into more discussions about it!

Yeah, this is a good obsession, isn't it!

Well, not a problem, Roon...there will be plenty of opportunities to march with us or meet up with us at other Shindigs. We look forward to meeting you.

As far as advancing in rank, everyone basically starts out as a Private. To advance is a matter of time and what you can bring to the 76th overall in terms of skills, "products", etc. BabyWithThePower is the one in command that deals with the ranking, so he may be the best to answer this question.

Again, welcome aboard, and we hope to see you on the other threads...and eventually in person, too!

We are currently basing rank strictly on a contribution basis. There will be some exceptions (which Tristan and I have discussed) but basically you'll stay a Private until such a time that you've made a contribution. I've also got some other ideas that I have to flesh out first on the back burner as well.

Also wanted to note that all persons who have given me their info the last few days will be included on the next update.
