TRISTAN

Greetings! This is the discussion thread for the newly-formed 76th Independent Battalion. We are planning on marching in the DragonCon parade as a Battalion of Independent soldiers.
Last threads:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=11&t=25575
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=11&t=25503
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=11&t=25393
And our new website (thanks, BWTP!):
http://76thbattalion.homestead.com/index.html

I'll see if I can get all of the relevant data in this first post...

We have agreed that it is important to be at least somewhat uniform in appearance...vests, coat or smock, helmet, and weapon...at least close in pants, shirts, and boots. As the war progressed, the Independents seem to have become very hodge-podge...I was aiming for a relatively new group...haven't really had their edges dulled too far yet.
These are photos from the series and the Companion Guide that we are basing the costumes from:

A similar pair of pants that most of the soldiers seem to have worn can be found here:
http://www.wwmerc.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=CM83&type=store&catego
ry=3930

These are the pants I used for my Mal costume...all that needs to be done is a bit of hemming and adding the stripe down the side. You don't have to use these pants, but they are the closest within a decent price range.

Vest:
Tristan is designing one now:

There is still a lot of work to be done, and I may end up changing the way the lines are on the front...go for the simple three-lines and stick with that for everyone.

Chainmail Sleeves:
Artcat is testing out these directions http://upstagereview.org/CostumesArticles/Chainmail.pdf and will be making chainmail sleeves on a limited basis, possibly making a make your own sleeves kit available if there is enough interest.

Helmet:
BabyWithThePower has found an inexpensive Russin helmet that looks very good:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/LEG140-1717-628.html
They are currently out of stock, but BWTP will let us know when they re-stock.

Boots:
Not really a problem. Mid-calf or knee high boots. Shades of brown would be good.

Scarf:
Depending on what campaign, apparently. Mal wears a blue scarf and Zoe wears a red scarf in Serenity Valley. Tracey, Mal and Zoey all wear red scarves in Du-Khang. As we are our own Battalion, I think we should pick one color and stick with it. We am open to suggestions.

Belts and ammo packs etc:
Look around. A brown belt isn't hard to come by, and holsters are relatively easy to find. SAXON has a large number of holsters available.. saxon1014@hotmail.com for more info.

Patches can be found here:
http://mysite.verizon.net/resp06h7/
AND
www.OutToTheBlack.com will has fully embroidered Independent patches. The star is a navy blue, which is the color in the Firefly Companion book.

Gloves: Up to the individual

Weapons:
This subject has been gone over in great depth in the last thread. I have opted for the generic G36, of which I purchased two different brands:

BrownCoat1 found a more correct version on airsplat, but the price is a bit higher:

Either weapon is alright, but for the sake of uniformity, let's stick with the G36 look. By this I mean let's not have anyone running around with an AK-47 or M16.

Sidearms were also discussed, and it has been decided to leave that to the discretion of the individual. I'll let BrownCoat1 sum it up for us:
Quote:

I find no reason to believe that an Independent army, formed by volunteers from border planets would be all that different. It could be that Mal's pistol was an individual weapon Mal either brought with him, was issued, or found on a dead soldier. I would think it highly likely that other browncoats carried personal weapons as well. I think we should try to stay unified to a point on uniform and long arms, but that if individuals want to add sidearms, knives, etc, it should be okay. It would give us that frontier, individual feel of the browncoats. Unified for a purpose, but still individuals.

There is a lot more we have been discussing...flags, costume pieces, ranking, etc. I'll try to keep adding to this when I get time. Thank you to ArtCat for beginning the "cut and paste" info!

-EDIT-
Boy, have I missed a lot....

We have a patch!

I think the details on that are still being worked out, but there you are.
I also believe we have agreed to wear the Independent patch on our right sleeve/shoulder and the 76th on the left.

BoomerGoodheart will be making lanyards for sale to the 76th, with "76th Independent Battalion" on one side and "We Will Hold the Line" on the other. (Thank you for those!)

Still looking for more stuff I have missed....

Alright folks, I did some digging (and I plan on doing alot more) but my initial find to have our own custom guidon made is $170 single sided, $250 double sided. And that's if we make something as simple as this:

Not to mention the pole is a whopping $151.20

This is, of course, doable, but there is an inherant problem. That is obviously way to much for a single person to pay for a flag and a pole, so the cost will have to be split up. The problem is, unlike the patches, the guidon itself can't be. I've seen this kind of thing before and it'll end badly.

As was stated earlier, we are basing ourselves as a unit 500 years in the future, so I understand that we might not follow modern military doctrine, but my question is, why would we regress to how they did things 150 years ago? The technology is there that they wouldn't need to stitch on battle tags onto their flag, which even in the Civil war wasn't done until after the war was over. The military has always had a 'function before form' mindset, so simpler is better. This is an example of a guidon that's in use today by Delta Company of the 110th MI Battalion.

Notice it's simplicity. It has the Battalion colors (most, if not all MI units use blue as it's the MI color), the number signifying the Bn, the letter signifying the Company and the MI crest (a dagger, star and lotus). This is the norm, units tend to get extravagant flags when the unit's retired into a training Battalion or absorbed into another unit. Those are the flags that have the bright colors and battle patches on them. Cavalry units (and I'm talking old school cav, horses not choppers) had a fancy take on the American flag, but it was uniform over all Cav units. Unit flags tend to be simple. Just something to chew on.

Oh, and here was the picture of the Independent flag someone envisioned. I personally like it:

-EDIT-
BWTP moved it himself....

I like the concept of simplicity, and I also agree that something like a flag for a far-flung group could end badly. It would be nice to have, and I would not mind putting money into a pot to help get it, but the "who gets to keep it" might create problems. I'll go ahead and opt out as "Keeper of the Colors" to keep myself out of the possible scramble.

I do like the flag on the T-shirt...maybe something like that with our 76 patch on it somewhere....

What if we were to take the flag from the Tshirt, and simply put the 76 & chinese characters over the star? Seems like a way to combine both patches. As far as the actual purchasing goes, perhaps there's a Browncoat out there with seamstress skills who could make one for us?

I'm not really liking the idea of a separate flag or banner. I believe we should march under the SEBC banner and just let our costumes and patches show that we are a unit.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

$170 single sided & $250 double sided?!? Ouch! That is really steep. I will do some checking to see what I can find locally. I am sure there is bound to be someone who will do it far more reasonably than that. $151 for the pole is way ludicrous. I can get a flag pole at Lowes or somewhere similar for $25, finish it myself and get a lance top for it all for less than $65. I know because I was looking into poles for a flag I have at home.

Yeah, I'm kinda of the opinion of Fireflygal; maybe we should keep it simple. Since I'm at home today waiting on a repairman, I went ahead and ordered my Dragon*Con 2007 membership!! (YEEP) excitement continues to grow. I have some motorcycle boots (black/kinda beat up ones) that could work. Tristan, I haven't mentioned it before, but since I am sewing impaired, when you do get a uniform idea for the vests, please pencil me in for one of them or a pattern so I can have one made locally. Also are we wearing brown tee shirts under the mail/coats...and is THAT where we attach the patches (i.e. on the tee?)..just thinking that if so, the mail sleeves don't have to be too long since Atlanta, in Aug/Sep is called "Hot-lanta"?

Yeah, it's definitely called that for a reason, though it really wasn't too bad this year (then again, I didn't march in the parade)

Ah, good question regarding the placement of the patches. I have thought a bit about this, but want some other opinions.

Those of us who opt for the long coats won't have a problemas far as the patches go. I am also thinking of designing and building a "smock" similar to Zoe's to go under the red vest for those that want the exposed mail sleeves. I am going to have to get in touch with ArtCat about this, though. But, if there are sleeve-caps or even very short sleeves on the smocks, there would be a place for the patches....I'll see if I can put a picture in here to illustrate what I am talking about....

What that basically looks like is the long coat without the sleeves length-wise, but made out of what looks like burlap. Would those of you going for this option want it made out of burlap, or would you rather have the same type of cloth as the coats (cotton of some sort)? Let me know so I can design something shiny! And it will probably be a bit "cleaner" than what Zoe wears, as we are a new, sharp Battallion.

I marched in the parade in a full Mal get-up, complete with the leather Browncoat. It was warm, but not too terribly uncomfortable. Besides, we should be worried about looks rather than comfort!

FFG, and all, actually, I have been talking to WickedWren, and she did ask if we would be marching separately...I told her we would rather march with the SEBC and keep all the Browncoats united.
As for a flag, it will be our marching standard...and upright flag rather than a banner...so it will not be detracting from the SEBC banner at all.

Sister, nothing was taken as implied...or assumed...implied-assumed...heck, now I am confused!
The patches should fit on the small sleeves of the smock...those might even be good to hide where the mail sleeves attach to the undershirt...again, I need to talk to ArtCat about that. Anyone seen here around today?

Sorry Tristan, I'm really against marching with any sort of flag. I know we're walking under the Seeb-kah "banner" but having a flag, sort of makes us separate and I'm really against that. We don't need no stinkin' flag....

I'm here just work is keeping me insanely busy, and probably so for the rest of the week, but no fear I am knitting when i get home/ before work and on my lunchbreak. I will have sleeve #2 done this week while #1 is getting tinkered with.

For the Chainmail sleeves I strongly suggest wearing something under them, black would make the chainmail look that much better underneath it,

I am talking to my leatherworking friends about the buckle system you see on the chainmail sleeves (on the underside), And yes where you attach the chainmail sleeves on your upper arm or shoulder I am sure you will want to disguise.

There you are, ArtCat!
I understand about being busy...I would rather be at home sewing right now myself....
I will try to design the "smock" to at least come down a few inches on the arms. That would help hide whatever type of attachment made to the undershirt.

If you look at the above pictures it looks like the shirt/jacket that comes over the chainmail is either babydoll t-shirt sleeve length or a good half sleeve

looks like it can vary quite a bit, I would think where a regular tshirts sleeve would fall is a nice happy medium if you are trying to go with a more uniformed look, plus even if the chainmail weighs down what its attached to above it can behiddden by the overshirt.

Does any of the above make sense?

ArtCat, that makes perfect sense. Kind of what I was thinking, I just needed to hear it from someone else.
So, the "smock" is sort of a short-sleeved version of the long coat. I like that...makes it much easier to make! Thank you for helping clear my mind.

NICODEMUS

Whilst looking for stuff to add to my costume, I remembered that Airsoft is frowned upon in this country (Oz), and so, for all those who are unsure, or utterly unaware of the leagality of owning/importing Airsoft weapons, I present the link to the font of all modern knowledge on the cortex.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_issues_in_airsoft

Since there's no way I can own/import any weaponry here, this narrows my options a bit. One thing I did think of was to have someone in the Atlanta region (or someone who's driving to DC) to order the guns for those of us who either can't buy the stuff in our country of origin or are unable to bring it with us. Since some of the stuff online is as cheap as US$5 (okay, so it was a G3 with a scope and bipod, but we could always do with snipers), then I would be happy to transfer the funds to whoever's willing to buy the guns and bring them to DC.

Since I wouldn't be able to take the gun home with me (unless I ended up staying in the US), the gun would be donated to the 76th's cache for future events.

My other 2c worth on the topic of costuming is that instead of an assault rifle or the like, with a pistol and a bunch of fake grenades/explosives/detonators, people could be the battalion's demolitions specialists (would we have an insignia to denote specialities such as the CIB, Rifleman, Demo, Sniper, etc?).

You know, those Red BUll Energy drinks are aluminum would be easy to spray paint silver and slap labels on plus they are a good comfortable size in your hand and less bulky than regular soda cans.....

I know the stunt grenades that Mal threw in the extra features was actually hard rubber...does anyone have one of those old super bouncy ball making kits laying around? Something like... This http://cgi.ebay.com/Super-Ball-Factory-Kit-High-Bouncing-Balls-Superba
lls_W0QQitemZ270053364554QQihZ017QQcategoryZ19017QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

.. My thoughts are use something like a red bull can as your mold instead, fill it 50-75% full of the material for the molds, let it set, and then pull it out of the cans, carve any details needed spray paint and handpaitn teh details....

Or you could get Very fancy and make a plaster mold...

OOo *edited because i got past my brain fart** any art supply store carries different rubber/ latex/ resin and other casting materials for theater... http://www.dickblick.com/categories/moldingcasting/ I will be making a run to Tezas Art Supply this weekend to talk to their staff about the best material for the job...

Xie xie folks yall gave me an excuse to go to my fav store :)

The Pros of a rubber mold are if they fall they bounce, and I dont think any country has outlawed teh bouncy ball yet ( I could be wrong of course)

Morning, 76th!

Nico, I will have several "extra" guns with me for the use of our foreign brothers and sisters. So, there should be no need for you to spend money for something you will not be taking with you. This goes for everyone, too...I, at least, will have extra G36 rifles for people that do not have their own.

I also like the idea of a demolitions soldier. That way, we are sure to have grenades!

Nico, just had a thought regarding a weapon for you. The "M41" version of the G36 breaks down into a compact submachine gun. Check the last thread for the photos. It is small enough that it won't get in the way, but still has the same look as the main Independent rifle. Something to think about. I'll have at least two of those with me.

ArtCat, grenades are a good idea! Airsplat actually carries grenades that spray out the rifle BB's...but I like your idea better.

BABYWITHTHEPOWER

Morning troops. Just to let you all know, I have updated the site. Something of note though, Firefox is being a might twitchy and not showing the updates I'm posting on some of the pages. IE and Netscape work fine.

I'll post more once I figure out why Firefox is being a pain.

Tell me what you guys think.

Boomer, I was thinking about sending Nathan a message on MySpace (in the hopes that it was him), but now that we know it will be him, even better. Thanks a bunch, and thank Saxon too.

I also wanted to say, any of you that want to add the Battalion's URL into their sigs, by all means. It might even attract more people from here that haven't thought to check these threads. Show some unit pride!

Also, if someone wants to help me out and make a banner for me (animated is a plus) that I can give to other sites so they can link to us it'd be much appreciated. Every store/site I link to I'm going to ask that they return the favor. Spread the word a little more. I thank all of you in advance for your time, should you chose to do it.

Morning, BWTP!
It looks good! I really want to thank you for taking the time to do this. It's nice to have a homepage! I think everyone I know has received the link in their email!

I do see a typo or two, but beyond that, it looks wonderful!
Oh, my email address is tristan71@cableone.net

As far as the scarf goes...should we make a decision here and now? I am up for the blue one myself. What do y'all think?

Again, let me do a little dance...we have a webpage! And an Army! Shiny!

Thank you again for the work you are putting into this!

BWTP, thank you. I will put the link into my sig. I'll also contact DeskTopHippie about creating a banner for us. She does some very shiny work!

It's really not a problem. I enjoy it actually. Fixed the typos I found and added your email, thanks.

I was thinking either blue or green for the scarf, though red goes best because it matches the vest. Definately something to keep in mind.

I don't generally like saying things like that, even when someone says "Look it over and tell me what you think"...makes me feel like all I did was find what was wrong. It is a very shiny page, and I am very proud that the 76th is on the web now.

As for the roster, if you have time, you can put those of us from the Roll Call thread in there, I would imagine. If nothing else, we can figure out the ranks later.

I had not thought of green for a scarf...that would be nice and different. If I am allowed to change my mind, I will opt for the green. Sort of an Olive Drab, you think, to match the green on the patch?

I think (and this was suggested by Reignphoria in the e-mail I posted in the first thread) that the scarves have something to do with rank, so we might not all need the same, depending. If not, I think I like the blue ones better (though the green ones that were suggested, matching the patch color and all, might be shiny too).

And good call on asking DTH, that was the same thought that popped into my mind when he asked.

Olive drab is a little darker than the color of our patches, but whatever the patches end up that's the color we'd want to match. It'll make the patches stand out more.

Don't worry about saying negative things abour the site. I want it to be a good as it can be, and typos hurt that. I seriously want to know everything you find wrong and tell me. All critisism, constructive of course, is welcome.

I'll post the rosters up now. But I don't have everyone's (or anyone's for that matter) real full name and would like to put that up. Also, we are allowed to put a nickname on our D*C badges, I plan on putting BabyWithThePower (if it's too long Caboose, an old Army nickname). That being said, whatever your nickname (should you choose one) is, I'd like that as well to put it in the roster. Another thing I'd like, if none of you are opposed, would be to put your hometown, state, country on there as well. It'll show visitors how far our sphere of influence is. Just a thought. I'll set mine up that way, you guys can use it as an example.

Oh, and before I forget. I was also planning on making a thank you/contributor page as well. I know alot of people have contributed alot of things, but I don't know all of it. Now this page is going to be mainly major contributors (Tristan, ArtCat, RIMG, myself [hope that doesn't seem vain], etc.)not just people that provided links, you understand (I hope). I just want those that have gone the extra mile to have a place to shine.

ALright, how about the green or blue scarves for the officers and the red ones for enlisted? Let me know if that is a possibility, or if I am way off here.

I have not heard back from DTH yet...but I'll let y'all know what she says.

BWTP, that sounds like a great idea. More people know me as Tristan than anything else, so I will stick with that for a name and nickname...less confusing for me that way! Hometown is Anniston, Alabama.

I don't have a problem with the thank you/contributor page, either. It's not vanity at all...we are all putting a lot into this!
Thank you again!

I was wondering...

name badges will we have them? I know several browncoats have embroidery machines, if we had a specific size and color the patch needed to be I bet we could draft some of them to embroider names for a small fee.

And having had stalker problems in the past, I would prefer not to have my real name on the website. Believe it or not folks call me artcat as often as my real name in person.

and since we are all part of the same battalion would we be mostly from the same planet??? ( i know random things that are not important at the moment but my mind does wonder)

As for scarfs most folk seem to be wearing red in the pics, but green is my fav color and blue would also match the patches nicely.... I will hold off my vote until we can get a more informed decision (someone hears from Shawna trpcic or someone else in the know). Worse comes to worse we find a source for wahtever color and all buy from there.

oh and I have the replica of Mals side arm from Quantum on order, not sure I will bring that to D*con but i ahve get some good pics of it for reference if folks need it later on when it arrives

Browncoats are the shiniest folks in the 'verse

I had RiverIsMyGoddess this year, and it fit, so yours should be fine.

That sounds like it will work, and someone suggested getting green/blue that matched the patch, which I like.

Embroidered names on the uniforms sounds good too.

Warner Robins, GA for me, and everyone at con this year called me River.

ArtCat, I love the fact that your mind works about the same as mine...way too many ideas at once! You are just a bit more articulate about getting them down in type.
I am not so sure about the name tags on the uniforms...I mean as far as real names go. It would be shiny to have our screen names on them, though.

I do think we would all come from the same planet...had not really thought about that, but it makes a lot of sense.

Looks like the scarf thing is going to be a hot topic. Let's give it a day or two of opinions, then we can decide from there.

ArtCat, a Quantum replica?!? Ooh, shiny! I want one of those...
Not that it makes too much of a difference, but that pistol is the one from the BDM, and it has some slight differences from the series pistol...but is it so very shiny-looking! *envy*

There are a shit-ton of sites out there that offer military nametapes for like $3.00. And most Army/Navy surplus stores make them too. If we have them made either online or at a surplus store we will all at least know where uniform.

I completely understand. Would you be oppsed to giving your hometown at least?

Oh, and big update to the site. Check out the kickass little mapping program I found. Tristan, you of all people I know will love it. Firefox is still not displaying ANY of the updates I've made, though the other browsers are. Tell me what you think. Oh, and remember ranks don't matter/aren't decided yet. I put people in categories based on where I felt they should be based on contributions I'm aware of. It was just for form.

I'd like to also go ahead and nominate BWTP as XO of the 76th. It appears that I am a Colonel (whee!). I'd also like to nominate ArtCat and RIMG for something...I am just not sure what! I did see the ranks you posted before, BWTP, but my ignorance is far-reaching...

I have them down as NCO's for the moment, actual rank can be voted on/decided whenever. I say we pose a question to the both of them before we nominate. Do they want to be NCO's or officers?

Second!

Using my SN on here is fine with me, and if it doesn't fit, I can just make up one.

Officer/NCO doesn't matter to me, I just plan on being the best damn medic I can. Something that sounds cool I suppose

ArtCat, would the same work for you, rank-wise, with Logistics as your MO?
