Anyone play this? If so, do you recommend it?

Well I have it, I love it. I hated the MMORPG but, not this one. It also got pretty good reviews.

Wonderful graphics, wonderful world, interesting fighting system but.....eh. This is my first MMORPG and at first it was interesting to play with my friends on-line and see what kind of havoc we could wreak. There's a lot of job systems you can develop, so if creating a character is your main pay-off for playing a game, Final Fantasy XI will not dissapoint. There's also a very interesting world you can explore, and a lot of various goodies you can work on.

My big drawback with this game was the story. That's mainly why I play fantasy rpg video games; I like the plots, characters, and histories they can develop. FFXI was painfully lacking in this aspect. Still, the game was fun to play for a couple of months till the levelling-up became WAY too tedious for me. That's the main reason I quit playing.

I like the Final Fantasy genre and all but I like more free form role playing sort of like 2nd Edition AD&D.

The best free form role playing game that I have ever played and can still play is the online (FREE!) game called Cantr II ( www.cantr.net). I have found nothing like it since. I like the game because there is no end, everything is created from the characters played by the players, the limit is your imagination. Plus the system, which consists of databases upon databases, are always being improved upon and added on so there is always something new in the future. I know they are working on adding in reproduction so that children are introduced soon. I would love to play a baby!

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

There IS major story involved in the game, but to "flow" through it with relative fun and challenge requires a LONG time of leveling and getting jobs, making cash, etc.

It depends on how much time you devote to it. I for one like FF cause I don't have to play 50 hrs a week. I was on Star Wars for a while when it came out, and one thing that annoyed me was if I didn't play for four or five days, you were behind on so many different areas.

FF's story is involved in completing Missions for your nation then learning of a bigger picture.. But it takes a long time and requires a solid group to do reasonably. You can't solo the game. It's a different dynamic. It is a downside, that the time neccessary to build to various story levels is a pain compared to the payoff. BUT it is still a solid SQUARE game (I hear the expanison story arcs are also a blast).

The economy of the game is also very shattered (on some world's it's an insane capitalist nightmare)...but that's a whole 'nother rant.

Side note, there is also a little bit of annoyance with some jobs (i.e., Summoner requires you to be VERY high level just to get some of the summons..just to play the "game/story" as a Summoner is immense devotion to the Grind... Sucks.

If you like FF, you might like it. If you like MMORPG's it depends. If you want an MMORPG to play in spare time, sure, it's a blast.

(BTW, if any Browncoats wanna bug me in game, World's Cerberus, character is Lina. ^_^)
