SERYN

Heya, what i'm about to say will give you cause to mock me i know, but if you could just hold in the the incredulous giggles for a moment longer...

My dilemma is this, i've been invited to a costume party on May 11th and i'm stumped for a costume to wear. The theme is sci fi, (yes, now the laughter begins) and as a joke i've agreed to go dressed as Bender from Futurama (queue large amounts of cardboard and grey poster paint!) Problem being, that as i wouldn't be able to sit, talk, drink or even see all that well dressed like that, plus the fact that it will be trashed in under a half hour, means that i want another costume to wear the rest of the night.

unfortunetly, even with an encyclopedia of sci fi and sci-fi's 75 sexiest women poll, i can't think of one that really sparks my imagination.

(what imagination? you cry!)

so here are my problems -

i'm fat, and as half naked is the style of choice amongst the sci-fi sisterhood, eeek.

i'm broke, so anything requiring yards of fabric or complicated peices that you can only buy is out.

its a party of non-sci fi type people, to anything two obscure is going to mean i spend the entire night explaining it to people until i pass the drunk point where i start getting violent.

i'm short of time!

on the plus side, i am a trained costume maker (yes, unbelievable, note, not costume designer) so it could be a little more complicated.

so far my best ideas have been a Star Trek alien girl (makes use of the grey bender make up, so lots of floaty chiffon, some sandals and an I Dream of Jeanie hairdo and it also covers the sexy/wierd/camp/silly/funny check boxes) or Aeryn Sun from Farscape (yes, laughable, but pair of leather pants from a charity shop, humungous toy gun and i'm set) or the fifties Rose from Dr Who (pink dress, denim jacket, bouffont hair) promlem there being that mon bloke is going as Dr Who more than likely, and i can't decide if matching costumes is sweet or really naff.

So, over to you - anybody got more of an imagination than me?

Isn't sanity really a one trick pony, anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy...ooh hoo hoo hoo... the skys the limit!

Bender is okay. Just modify it so you can sit down. For drinking, take some straws with you.
There are ways around anything.

I think Bender is a really great idea. I always wanted to go as Robot from "Lost In Space".

1) Kaylee. A pair of overalls, a nice floral print shirt, and a wrench and you're golden. Also you don't have to worry about getting all of the bender makeup off just call it engine grease.

2) Get a military type costume - something in the dress uniform type would probably be best. Add a plastic ray gun looking thing and say you're a lieutenant (or captain or admiral depending on how impressive your uniform looks) in the Aldebaran League Freedom Force. Nobody needs to know you just made it up.

Like DaveS said, a pair of overalls and you can be the prettiest mechanic around. Complete with the dirty hand print on the rump like in Jaynestown when she's walking down the ramp.Am I the only one thats seen that?

MISSTRESSAHARA

You might consider Yo/Saf/Bridge's costume that you can do easy. The skirt and shirt are almost hippy in it's look. If you look at clothing stores you can find the kind of skirt she wears, and her top is a pleasant blouse (now that springs here there should be many in abundance) some sandals, and maybe some rummaging at thrift stores can find you a knitted shawl. And if you've been wanting to cut and dye your hair a rasberry blonde, nows you opportunity. The best part of the costume, they'll be clothes you can wear every day after the party.

Or, if your in a real pinch maybe you can take a pair of wrap around sun glasses (I think their used in sports) paint one eye in the middle with some craft paint, put your hair in a ponytail, and go as Leela. Just make sure there's some space for you to see out of.

Have fun. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
