Woohoo! Go Ireland! Victorious with a one all draw against Cameroon!
Germany was a bit cruel though, 8 nil??? Talk about overkill...

Anybody else watching?

Actually I don't pay much attention to the other football. I was raised with American football and baseball. I know soccer is getting more popular in the US, butI just don't get it. I also don't get basketball or hockey. How do you keep track of what is going on with everybody moving all over the place? With the US getting a win over Mexico, I'm sure we are going to hear a LOT mnore about over the next few years. Maybe I will figure it out by the next World Cup.

US Team doesn't play until the 12th, but then I'll be watching. I'm also rooting for England because of Owens. But I would like to see the US do better than it did last time (although last time it did do better than anyone expected).

. . .in my terrible, awful, politically bias way of 'let's not go to war', I'd like to see them stomp the hell out of Iran and Mexico. Admittedly, I don't even know if that match up would be possible, though.

The match up is possible, but unlikely because it would depend on both teams getting to at least the semis (you're in the bottom half of the draw, iran and mexico are in the top)

I'd like to see a USA v Iran tie as there'd be a lot of passion there, and although underdogs I think they'd be a match for you. Mexico would probably beat you. France (in case you were wondering) would stomp on you.

Well, we've been beating Mexico recently. It happened WC and it happened again this past fall.

As for the frogs . . .well, we'll see. Should it happen.

I didn't even know Convey was the field for the US the entire first half. I don't think he got the ball once.

I must say I think the fate of the US is sealed by this loss and the triumph of Italy over Ghana.

I am also pulling for England. I'm Frank Lampard fan - because I love the 25 yard shots he takes. But England had their own share of problems in their first game as well.

Short of England I'd like to see Netherlands take the Cup.

It will definitely be an interesting Cup this time around.

Who is the better player, Ronaldinho or Maradona? I think if Ronaldinho can lead Brazil to a World Cup win, he may actually surpass Maradona IMHO.

Ok, so anyone watch the final today?

Questionable: first penalty shot, recalled Italy goal. Malouda dove and the offsides was passive IMO.

I was surprised at Zidane's exit to his final match ever, that was outrageous.

I had picked Italy to win and I'm glad they did but the French domination of the second half was amazing. Ribery is a man to watch as he matures.

New favorite player is Cannavaro. Superb Cup performance.

For everyworldspinnin: I think Ronaldinho does surpass Maradona despite not leading Brasil to World Cup victory. do you have an opinion on C. Ronaldo?

As I am Scottish I am a big fan of C. Ronaldo due to the wave of fury being targeted at him by England supporters! Although I thought his house being torched by England fans was going a bit far....

As for the diving issue it really doesnt bother me. Firstly, everybody does it. Secondly, as a water polo player faking being fouled is a part of my game. We have whole training sessions devoted to feigning being fouled my opposition players, so 'the fake' is another aspect of the game to try to master. So seeing footy players dive doesn't upset me!
What do you reckon to that? Are water polo players fallen beyond all redemption?! Or are footballers catching on?
PS. I am rather pissed at the moment.

I'm on the fence about Cristiano. I don't mind a dive every now and then but I felt he was excessive by the end of the Cup. What I really don't like is fancy for fancy's sake and that's really when he gets me angry.

I didn't hear about his house getting torched, I agree that is excessive.

As for water polo, I've only seen some Olympic stuff and heard stories from my husband who used to play. It does seem like you need to sell the foul - but I thought it was because so much happens under the water's surface.

Do you follow Scottish footbal? My husband like Celtic by we don't get much coverage of it over here in the US.

I kinda follow Scottish football. My team is Partick Thistle, we are the third team in Glasgow and not terribly good - got promoted to Division 1 this year though thanks to a suspect playoff system
So is Soccer like a once-every-four-years thing in the US? That you be weird for me cos everyone is so obsessed with it here!

Its pretty much every 4 years, but there a small and dedicated contingent that watches what they can all year, every year. I think most of them are transplants to the US fron other countries.

I play recreational soccer and most of the people I know keep up with world events over the internet since there's not much on the telly.

We do have the Major League Soccer here, but its pretty weak, IMO.

Go Patrick Thistle! Best of luck in Division 1 this year.

I think, that maybe the Italian player provoked himunporpose hoping that he'll do sth stupid. I can't imaging Zidane beeing such a moron unless he was seriously provoked.

Apparent reason.

http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=1017712006

Whatever the truth of it, Zidane is a brilliant player, and although he's had a fair few incidents, it's not like he goes looking for trouble.

Materazzi did, and did he ever find it. (In terms of reprehensibility and foolhardiness, on a par with insulting Mrs Cobb, I'd call it.)

Anyway, Zidane went easy on him. Ignoring the rights and wrongs (...but not much, since I am not keen on snidey gamesmanship), I've rarely seen anyone get the heid put on them with such precision.

If that particular dunt had been delivered to the traditional address, Matty would have been auditioning for Marv's part in Sin City 2.
