OVEROBSESSED765

I recently was in an interracial relationship. Personally, I see it as just a relationship. I liked the guy for his personality and mind, not his color. I found and find him a wonderful person and he was quite good looking. Even though all of these things were true, people treated us so oddly. The comments were practically unbearable. My very conservative Grandmother was so shocked at the idea she didn't speak for five minutes which is a huge accomplishment for her.

I was called horrible names like N****r lover and he got a lot of grief for having a white girlfriend.

How have we come so far, only to fall this far down? Why is the way people are born such an issue? The color of one's skin has no affect on who we are as people. I can never understand why people would treat us differently then anyone. Racism is such a conundrum and I think it's sad that people still think that after all the world has accomplished.

I just had to voice this for it was a truly hard experience, but I wouldn't change a thing. For among those who were harsh and idiotic, there were those who were supportive and open minded. Which they shouldn't even have to be. Race does not matter.

If nothing else, I will always believe in the fans of Firefly/Serenity.

We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

It's rotten that you had to go through that. people can be so profoundly ignorant! Try having Tourette's syndrome, and having people take you seriously. Not that it bothers me most of the time, but I do still get irked occassionally when I get a weird vibe off someone, and can't figure out why...and then realize it's because I'm twitching. I don't know why I still get a little shocked that it actually colours some people's opinion of me, I should probably ignore it considering I've managed to power confidentally through life despite living in a body that's trying to rip itself apart.Oh yeah I also get called names, have been asked to leave night clubs( which I've refused to do) been spat at, and omitted off a friends wedding invitation list because she didn't want me "to be hurt by negative attention" (no longer a friend). I don't notice or care about the superficial stuff attached to people like their skin colour or physical state. It's so stupid to care about such things, and yet the majority of people do. bah Humbug! ( I am admittedly ever so slightly more prejudiced towards people with too much makeup, long painted nails, and squeaky/shrieky voices than I am towards others...apologies muchly to people in those categories it's a silly claim to ignorance I am working on). Re: relationships...I don't get as wide a pick of the pool as most women, because some men are turned off by my twitching...which is actually a good thing, as it weeds out the bad quality, and leaves only the best, who do flatter me with their attention on enough occassions for me to feel like I could be in a relationship some day. ( too bad I'm not usually interested... but that's another story).

Hi Just responding to your message.(tried to do it the proper way but am still learning about the whole internet thing). Thanks for your kind words, but it's not so bad as I'm used to it, and it's only the most ignorant people that do it.I'm kind of at a point where I'm sometimes amused by stupid reactions, and when I'm not I generally say something to the offendee/s, that I hope will make them think a little bit harder about the crap they eject from their minds/mouths. I've yet to learn how to ignore and walk away from situations...not likely to happen though.

Yes, it's idiotic.

I went through this same crap back in the mid-early 80's when it was even more taboo, for having a girlfriend somewhat darker than me.

You can imagine what all the pasty folk had to say, not that I cared, and my semi-racist family was well aware by then I gave not a damn about their opinion.

Her own soon-ex friends had a lot to say too, and not all of it with mere words (I got in at least eight physical brawls over it, as I recall) but in the end it was her own family threatening to disown her and cast her from her own home for being a race-traitor that did it in... this was a pretty tough girl, emotionally, and seeing her totally break down like that when she had to tell me to shove off hurt even ME, and that ain't easy.

It's a stupidity, however, we need not perpetuate ourselves, for damned sure I don't intend to.

For mine own, I favor the Bulworth philosophy, everybody hump everybody else till we're all the same shade and it don't matter no more!

Some folks are morons, is all it is - don't let it drag you down in the mire of ignorance with em.

-Frem

I never figured out which was the worst, the flak from dating black women (couple of which were models), or women of below-average intellect, or "not-as-pretty" or heavier-than-average. What business was it of anybody elses? The totally pshycho and bitchy women nobody seemed to care about, because they looked acceptable.

I eventually figured out that part of my family was racist. As a child I had known they referred to "that colored family" but had never actually met people who were purple, or green with polka-dots, or blue, so I never understood the translation until I was much older.

Part of the problem with racism may be the divisiveness with which some races (like African-Americans) enforce racial seperation, and then the prejudgement of other similar-looking people creates a blanket stereoptype. I think it was Oprah that had some show about how the black women all said they only wanted to associate with other black women, and not be around any woman of any other race or skin color.

Anecdote: While dating a black woman, a model, we were sitting with her friends, another black couple. I had just mentioned my friend, and then I saw my friend, and pointed towards him, and in description, said "the brown guy." My dinner mates said "Oh, we prefer the term Black, not brown" I was momentarily confused, but then explained that my firend was the white guy over there, he is wearing brown shoes, brown pants, brown shirt, and has brown hair, and brown glasses.

I did meet a thoroughly racist and stupid blonde woman once, and kinda quizzed her to find where she got her ideas (many racists have specific ranges of delineation.) She knew that "whites" were OK, which she defined as German, French, English, or Swedish descent. She said non-white races included Indian, Mexican, Italian, Jewish, Oriental, Russian, Austrian, Australian, or Scandanavian (she said she was not Scandanavian, she was descended from Swedish natives.) One of the more stupid women I've met. She said she could tell by looking at them whether they were good enough for her - even though she had not a clue.

Jesus! there are some morons! It's almost unfathomable to me that a family could reject a loved one over their choice of partner just because of skin colour or nationality. I mean if they were violent or depraved sure...the phenomena seems more common in the U.S. there are racists in Australia, but I don't think we have the same level of prejudice, infact most of my friends are in mixed race/culture relationships, and people don't seem to mind (variety is a good thing). as for the dumb blonde woman...I'm glad she doesn't consider Aussies as white enough. What a Mutant! I mean are these people missing some vital neurons or something? aaaghhh!!!

I haver read repeatedly that racism is very bad in France - they perpetuate some sort of caste system to keep black people under their heel.
But in America, the most racist people you'll find are black, and normally inner city. They are the practicing racists, while the "redneck" or "rural" sort is merely theoretical racist rather than practicing - once they meet and interact with other races, they find that ALL of the stereotypes are not true. The inner city racists, however, insist upon enforcing the stereotypes and divisiveness.

My 91 year old adopted grandmother was completely unphased by my sister turning up with a black boyfriend - age is no excuse for racism. There are cultural differences between different groups but to pretend one is intrinsically better than another due to the colour of their skin... stupid.
