I think my cat is either losing it or trying to assert himself as the alpha in our family. He's
6, and since last year he has had bouts of spraying everywhere despite being desexed when he was younger. we can't leave him inside overnight because he sprays. outside he has to mark everything. There have been no changes to his routine, or any new stressors I can think of...the only change is that he has started eating a wider variety of food after years of only eating one kind of dry food, and the occasional piece of rockmelon(????)Also he has become more violent lately. He used to retract his claws when he played with us, but now he doesn't. I'm thinking there might be a new cat on the block that has exacerbated the behaviour, as he seems to be getting into more fights. Any ideas would be welcomed.

I'd recommend going back to the old diet and seeing if there is any improvements (allergies). I'd also recommend keeping a spray bottle around for the time in which he does attack so there can be some consequences. But, foremost, get him to a vet as there are some ailments that can change behaviour in cats such as diabetes and kidney disease.

I hope it turns out to be something trivial. Good luck

Definitely sounds like a 'new cat' issue. Check that said new cat has not been getting into your house in your absence. (Happened to us - though we think the resulting wee patch was the incomer meeting the mogfather and panicking rather than territorial pissy fit, as it were.) Being 'done' doesn't seem to curb a cat's inner Jayne - ours would take on anything.

thanks for the help...I think it is a new cat thing I'll do some investigating...as for the spray bottle idea, he actually likes getting squirted and sprayed...this is a cat that plays in a downpour. A few years ago, a neighbour hosed him (he'd let their bunnies out of their hutch so he could play with them). he enjoyed the hosing! we love our weird little mutt, but the spraying is stinky!everything smells like cat pee.

I second the get him to the vet, mine had a bladder infection and it caused the spraying, and I agree, there could be another unfixed male around outside and he is spraying everything he thinks is his. I am a foster home for the local shelter and I have 6 of my own. Get him to the vet and go back to the other food.

Definitely another cat I've been watching the garden to see what's going on the world of cats....the school next door has a stray that has been getting cocky. I caught him spraying some of Theo's territory, and then Theo beat the crap out of him and resprayed it, and tried to come inside and spray...I think he wants to ensure the safety of the interior of our house. The Vet agreed, and also said it was actually a good thing that he's varying his diet...mind you now he only eats one type of dried food, and one type of tinned food, and rockmelon. won't eat chicken wings etc. He seems to prefer keeping his teeth clean by chomping on me.

Glad to hear it was something simple

Now if you can just find where the local chapter of the SCA is, you could get some armour

thanks Me too! I've already lost one cat friend to kidney disease, I would not want Theo to go through that hell...the Vet says he's pretty healthy, just a bit odd....which is not hard to believe considering the family he lives with. also his original owners stupidly took him away from his mother when he was 4 weeks old, so he has always had skewed social behaviour.
