How do you make 'em?

To be specific: how do you even get the shots you need a) onto the computer? b) onto the software?

I just can't work it out.

Especially on a Mac, using iMovie.

Anyone have the know-how?

As far as video from the movies? I think it is illegal to rip video clips from a dvd, but if you wanted to, you would probably do it with NERO cd and dvd copying software. I think most people take clips posted on the internet at various fan sites by copying them to their computers and then use windows movie maker to thread the clips together with any music file they desire as long as the music industry doesn't catch on.

Thats actually what I originally tried - but macs work differently so it didn't work.

I've found the best thing to use is HandBrake (which many sites say is legal, as long as its your own bought DVDs you're ripping) and then a program called iSquint to change the format.

Macs have a program called iMovie which is just like Windows Movie Maker to use, too. So once I've got those clips everything's fine.

It matters not if you are ripping from your own videos or not if you post copyrighted images and videos onto the internet. I was just sued for posting music that I owned the disks to on my web site, and because people could copy my files I was sued. I don’t know if there is a difference here, and I don’t know if video companies are as actively looking for video pirating as much as the music industry is, but it might be considered illegal and don’t take someone else’s opinion for it unless they are a lawyer. There might be web sites for downloading approved clips and video streams just like there are for Harry Potter fan videos. You might look for those.

The legalities change from state to state, province to province, country to country. So, to say that "it is illegal" period, doesn't take the real world into consideration. Check your local listings.

Point of fact, I've heard of zero people getting sued that gave proper attribution to the source material. So, if you make a video, make sure that you state what you're using and where it's from. So, music = song name, band and possibly album and video = show name and possibly other details. Typically, this is inserted at the end of the vid.

You might also want to check out any ripping/editing software available for *NIX (linux, the *BSD's, etc) as many of those programs are available for Mac through MacPorts. Some even having native Mac builds as well.

Rallem, you got sued because you put copyrighted work, in its original form on the internet for distribution. THAT was a mistake and a clear cut violation of copyright law. What WakeupSoon wants to do is very *very* different from that. (S)he wants to make a fan vid. And those have a long history of being tolerated by the MPAA/RIAA/etc if not legal in its own right. You're comparing apples to oranges and that makes your suing point somewhat moot.

Aside: Ripping DVD/CD/etc/ arguably falls under fair dealing (fair use in in the US) as long as it's for personal use. It's called device/format shifting for which exceptions typically exist. Doing that and making it available to others which then download it/them are two very *very* different things.
