Gag! I'm halfway through a Speech Pathology degree...it's been interesting but because my mind sucks up information so well, I've become brilliant at diagnosing speech impedements....this would be a good thing if not for the fact that every person I listen to gets their speech automatically analysed by my over programmed brain..I feel like I'm invading their privacy, but am powerless to stop it happening other than by putting my fingers in my ears. Eg David Letterman stutters ...as do lots of other celebs, some have noticeable articulation problems and some of them might want to be checked for neurological issues. I was watching the view when Nathan Fillion was on and noticed him doing some really interesting things ( I imagine he has a knack for learning accents etc.) this new ability is kind of a curse. people have become walking voice specimens to me.

That must be fascinating! I've always had an ear for nuances in speech, but I never even thought about lines of study in that direction. I'd be interested to know what speech patterns might say about a person :smile:

Speech patterns can tell you a lot about people once you know what to look and listen for. Eg: children with even mild persisting phonological disorders may go on to have reading difficulty. Also many people have been misdiagnosed with behavioral disorders when in fact they have communication difficulty that often leads to frustration etc....it's very fascinating stuff. I suppose I should have considered the occupational hazard aspect of this course considering I have residuals from my last occupations.I used to work in disabilities so am constantly recognising various syndromes etc in people I also worked with kids for many years, and automatically apply redirectional behaviour management any time I am around unruly kids...and adults. can't help myself, and if done effectively they don't even know why they are choosing to change their behaviour. For any of you that have worked as teachers or child care workers, do you still have the knack of giving people that special "look" that makes them behave? I do.

Actually Firefly is a good one to watch and annalyse re the different behaviours. Jayne reminds me so much of the 7-9 year old boys I had in my afterschool care groups...utterly primal and buckish initially, but eventually they established a strong sense of loyalty towards their leader. And its not true what you hear about boys needing an alpha male to look up to, they are just as happy with an alpha female as long as her voice is low pitched.( i.e. Me)I believe it's all about the voice tone. If you screech you lose them.

You know, I often find myself wondering if the way people say certain things is accent or impediment. There's plenty of words that, for whatever reason, people cannot or will not say properly. You're making me want to study this now. I already have a degree track!

Likes to mess with stuffs.

My wife is a Speech Pathologist. She would analyze everyone while she was in school. You'll probably stop doing it when you're out of school and working.

The problem she has these days is whether or not to tell the parents that there's something wrong with their child or that their child will need years of therapy and that there's no possibility that it will get better very quickly. Or that the person won't be able to speak or swallow properly for a very long time, etc.. Emotionally, it's difficult sometimes because people expect some sort of miracle or deny that there's nothing wrong when there is.

There's a whole bunch of moral and ethical dilemma that I'm probably not very good at explaining, so I'll just stop here before I get into some kind of trouble.

It's a very rewarding field though if you can do it well.

oooh...I am just about to start dealing with stroke patients and elderly people with swallowing difficulty etc in a prac block.I'm looking forward to it on a lot of levels but know I'll see some things that will be hard to process. It is a hard career morally and ethically but I have years of experience in disabilities to draw on. I hope your wife finds it rewarding despite the heartaches.

When my Mom was in the nursing home last year she had a fantastic speech therapist that helped her with her swallowing. Some of her throat muscles and nerves had been destroyed by radiation for neck cancer.

I have a Southern accent but add to that an inability to do TH's very well when I talk fast. I had therapy for it as a child and thought I'd conquered it but it's been resurfacing recently. I did recover from my L problem....ie See the yittle yady. Yeah! Speech pathologists!
