I love my cat...usually.But not so much today. Last night he took exception to me choosing to study for an exam rather than play with him...he reacted to my decision by banging on my bedroom window to get my attention and spraying the window frame. I reacted by shouting and running to the nearest exit to yell at him some more. he was waiting for me and shot inside before I could stop him. We then played a game of hide and seek (a game for him an annoyance for me) where he basically ran and hid under stuff while I tried to find him and get him out. eventually I found him waiting calmly at the front door as if nothing had happened. I think her felt he was doing me a favour by disrupting my studies...little bastard. he somehow managed to find the time to claw a couch and spray in the lounge room while I was hunting for him. Grrrr Muchly....To his credit I did get the first bit of exercise I've had in a week.

Eeee. And now he thinks that whenever he wants your attention, all he has to do is be bad. Yeah, not fun. :(

But good luck on your exam anyway.

America loves a winner!

I love how cats sometimes will 'chirp' as they meow. Dunno what that means or how they do it, but I'm guessing it's cat talk for something good.

And what's w/ putting their butts in your face ? Ugh...

The T.Rex they call JANE!

Mine does that too, and then WAVES HIS TAIL.

Usually doesn't bother me unless I'm writing...

They and dogs have identifying scent glands back there, making the butt-sniff thing the feline and canine equivalent of a human "Whazzup?!" handshake.

Also, for cats, the quick upwards flick of the tail as they pass or when they see you is their version of a humans friendly wave.

Vocally, cats have about 5-6 different subgroups, and depending on heredity 170-210 unique vocalizations, and I can tell you what most of em mean, especially if I know the cat.

Of course, with Kallista you don't NEED a translation, since muchlike a foreign drill sgt chewing out a rookie, the general gist is both pretty obvious, and obviously profane.

What about what I like to call question mark tail? My guess is it means "I'm super happy right now", but I'm just curious. It's when my cat has her tail sticking up and curled at the top into a little question mark.

That's generally a combination of greeting and interest in what you are doing, best translated as
(hello/curious/uncertain?)

Feline ecstasy or super happy is tail straight up and vibrating/quivering, best translated as
(omg omg omg yay!)

The quick upwards flick best comes to
(Sup?)

And rapid lashing it irritation, and bottled/poofed out is rage/fright.

Some cats, siamese in particular, will do this wacky multi-direction repeated tail flick, almost like it's a semaphore, which carries multiple meanings depending on the cat in question.

Vocalisations are a bit harder to translate, as cats have different ranges, but one funny trick of mine, and this took a year and more for each cat, is to get them to mimic human words.

It's tough because first the cat has to already make a similar noise, AND they have to like you enough to want to try - first you have to get the concept across to them that you want them to make a sound, and then a particular sound, and keep it within their attention span and patience when you try.

Squirmy can say "Mei-Mei?" which, when she did that to a friends daughter, nearly caused her to drop a plate in shock, that was funny.

Puppy can say "Rarab!" (RAY-rab) which is an evil little critter from Final Fantasy XI, which used to drive my ex bonkers since she is solidly addicted to the game and hates the bloody things, heh.
