Yeah. Except it takes place in Hong Kong. It should be "The Kung Fu Kid".

Oh, and don't forget to catch these other remakes:

Logan's Run
Starfighter (The Last Starfighter)
NIghtmare on Elm Street
Red Dawn
Hellraiser
Short Circuit
Footloose
Clash of the Titans (this one actually looks pretty good)
Conan the Barbarian
Westworld
The Highlander
and
The Warriors

This. Apparently it was supposed to be a deliberate homage, but then the Studio got involved and did what they always do.

If Jackie's character is actually named Miyagi, there's gonna be some outcry. (I don't just mean from fans; the whole Chinese != Japanese thing is a fairly big political issue. Remember when Memoirs of a Geisha used a Chinese actress for a Japanese character?)

they jump in and shout "sweep the leg!"?

I still might give the new one a lil bit of credit if it contains this in the soundtrack.

And whatever happened to C.Thomas Howell? I've seen him in a few Z grade movies, and guesting on TV. So sad he had so much promise. I guess Ralph Macchio never had to work again after the karate kid movies.

Actually, he has done some work, unfortuantely his "boyish" looks backfired on him in getting any really good roles. He's pushing 50 and he still looks like he's in his late 30's.

His latest work was 11 episodes of Ugly Betty, unfortuantely that show just got axed.

Of these, Clash of the Titans, Elm Street and Red Dawn are the only sure ones.

The Logan's Run remake is pretty dead. The Warriors and Westworld too, I think. Footloose just lost a director, so it may not happen.

Conan isn't a remake, it's more of a reboot, telling a new and entirely different origin for Conan.

I'm worried about the Highlander remake. The script has a lot of cool stuff, and a lot of really frustrating stuff. I hope they don't blow it.

i keep reading Co-NAN (ie: the barbarian), as Conan (ie: O'Brien)

which has lead to some interesting mental images...

...Conan O'Brien as Conan the barbarian

he is "unemployed" now, can't legally host another network talk show until late august...

Thanks for that clip. I forgot how much I enjoyed that movie and that finale, and it's hard to believe it's been 26 years!!?? Man I'm gettin' old.

ps. Ralph Macchio has kept working some. He did My Cousin Vinny, then a great episode of the new Outer Limits, and he also appeared as himself on Entourage, as well as a recurring role on the just-canceled Ugly Betty.

I've started referring to the new Conan movie as "Ronon the Barbarian," since they've cast Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex from Atlantis).

I can only hope there's room for a David Hewlett cameo. . .

Wow, thanks for the heads up on this list.

No Dissasemble.

Red Dawn, Conan, and Clash got my attention, and a lil bit on NoES.

Also, I think I caught Ralph as himself on an Entourage episode.

I've seen pretty much all of these titles listed on various sites and I won't vouch for any authenticity, so I'll believe your assessment, StoryMark.

As far as Highlander goes, they really horked up the storyline with Highlander 2. It totally didn't mesh with the original. But for them to do a remake just makes me sad.

Larry Drake, aka Sir Warwick Harrow was in the original Karate Kid movie. His role is listed as Yahoo #1 at beach.

The fact that they blew it so mightily with two is why I'm hopeful for a remake. It's a great concept, that is well suited to an ongoing franchise - but they hamstrung themselves by leaving themselves nowhere to go with the sequels.

I think a remake is a great idea, because they can avoid the mistakes made before, and really make the most of a good concept.

And like I said, the script has some really good stuff in it. But it also makes the same mistake as the original - definitively ending the story - but then adds on a inexplicable "no, tricked you, you weren't the last one" coda at the end.

With a bit of rewriting, it could be a really good flick. And I;m hoping they've fixed these thing, since the draft I have is a year old now, and they've likely tweaked it since hiring a director.

What really killed me with 2 was that not only were they immortal, but they were ALSO from a different planet/future time (take your pick, depending on non- or director's cut).

I mean, WTF?!?!? And then conveniently they omit that McCloud didn't know Ramirez when they met in the Original, yet they knew each other in the past/future/other planet before coming to their respective times.

The first was fine as a stand alone concept, but 2 just f*cked it all up and made it impossible to comprehend.

By the way, C. Thomas Howell did a stint on NBC's short-lived "Southland", which is now on TNT.

And his boyish good looks are long gone. It took me a while to figure out who he was; he looks like he's got a good 20 years of heroin addiction under his belt, but there's no mention of that in his bio. Dude looks really rough these days, though.

They were stuck. They made a stand-alone film, that turned out to be a huge cult hit on video, and people started asking for a sequel - which the original made virtually impossible (at least, before the prequel became the norm).

So, while it turned out terrible, I can respect them a bit for trying to do something new (at the very least, you can't call 2 a rehash of the first....though you can say it of the 3rd) with a story that was already over.

I didn't really want to get into 3, but since it's been mentioned...

Look, anything with Michael Ironside is going to suck. Which is sad because I really like him as an actor. But yeah, his presence will ruin everything he's in. How is that for a paradox?

Can't really argue with that. I like Ironside, but he does a lot of crap. I liked Starship Troopers (no, it's not the book, but it makes it's own points) and Total Recall, though.

But point of fact - he was in 2 not 3. That was Mario Van Peebles in 3.... who arguably has an even worse track record than Ironside.

(I am encyclopedic on Highlander stuff - even the stuff I hate)

I stand corrected. I totally confused my episodes there. And ok, the reason I hated 3 was because Van Peebles. For some reason I superimosed Ironside over Van Peebles in my head.
