Ah, that is a good moment. Makes me wish I paid more attention to comic books.

Sounds like Marvel screwed that storyline RIGHT up, though.

I think the last commentor may have a point about not really equating with "making a stand on principle" with "patriotism," but it's too afflicted with random rhetoric American-themed catch phrase soup for me to make sense of it.

The scary part is that they think we're the crazy ones.

Seriously, someone has collected some of the more obvious examples at "superdickery.com", under propaganda extravaganza - but if you go there make sure your pop-up blocker and defenses are in place cause the host just tried to foist a hostile popup at me, potentially containing a drive-by download of some malware, grrrr.

Much as I can't stand Marvel, they did try a bit to slide under that by presenting mutant persecution as something boneheaded, ridiculous, and offensive, they just didn't do it all that well, especially when some of the more out-there writers thought it every bit as fine an idea as Jim Crow laws... *hisss*

I used to not like DC because I didn't think their heroes had very much depth to them beyond "superpowers!"

Except Batman, who is always an exception.

But more and more, I appreciate some of their off-universe because of the stories they can tell. Just for Watchmen alone, I have oodles of respect for Alan Moore. And then there's Frank Miller, and Neil Gaiman. There's more imagination in DC now. I think it's about time I jump ship from Marvel.

Though I still kinda don't like Superman. He's the resident Paladin/Cape, and me and Paladin/Capes don't get along too well.

Well, to be fair, Superman hasn't been the same since the late 90s (after the "Death/Reign/Rebirth" meta-arc). Once they dropped the triangle numbers and let every Super-book go in their own direction, anything resembling a continuing storyline became impossible.

Then "Birthright" came along and pretty much ended the Post-Crisis timeline that had given us so much, reducing Lex Luthor to a Smallville-ized charicature of his Pre-Crisis self, and gutting him of what made him Superman's perfect foil.

Now that they've brought the triangle numbers back (since the "World of Krypton" multiseries kicked off), it's taking an upswing in quality (as long as you ignore "Birthright" and the repurcussions).

Though Superman still isn't at his best except when he's interacting with Batman (as in the referenced Superman/Batman pages).

I blame Didio, really, with his "nothing can change permanently" editorial mandate. I fear that DC is one step away from a "One More Day" type continuity frell up.

Hopefully Didio is eventually replaced with someone more daring; there's a whole passel of interesting Superman stories yet to be told, but they'd all be "game-breakers." You can already see the writers starting to rebel against the status-quo (what with Jimmy learning Clark's secret identity in "52," and the aforementioned return of the triangle numbers).

I read that book, and oh, how I hated that story arc. Sorry--great art, but a miserable storyline, IMHO.

I can understand that. I mostly just thought it was funny, even if it's a bunch of drug user stereotypes. Superman normally kind of bugs me, he's very vanilla.
