My all time favourite item of clothing is the big suede anorak I bought in Sicily in 1992. I called it "horse" as even though the label said it was made form cow hide, as a leather worker I knew it was actually horsehide (it's Sicily...they waste nothing the horse inevitably died of old age after years of service)I was 20 kilos heavier than usual when I bought it so it was quite big. I kept wearing it even after I lost the weight. horse weighed 4 kilos and I was lost in it but it took me through quite a few cold Canberra winters. it now lives with and is worn by it's Aunty Shellie (dear friend and ex housemate).
I also love the cotton Anokhi shirts bought while I was in India. They're beautiful colours and perfect for hot Newcastle summers.

US Army standard issue Mk65 Field Jacket.
I kept it for years and years, and finally passed it down to my niece when she needed a warm coat for winter, she's not real big on the beat up surplus look herself, but her friends think it's pretty awesome, and she does find the enormous pockets useful.

So I currently have a jet black one - and one cool thing I've always liked is the liner, as it was the only jacket I owned and I was *very* poor, the liner doubled as a house-jacket in lieu of a flannel shirt, still does, and if I am not at the moment wearing it, my cat Kallista will immediately snuggle herself into it, since it was what I used to keep her warm when she was just a kitten.

I find the copious pockets useful as well, candy, tools, gadgets, it's like bringing home with you, and only fair since women get away with carrying a purse - you'd be amazed at the effectiveness of having all that junk in my pockets handy, I gotta wire saw in there, fire starter, bone wrench that'll fit most common nuts n bolts, swiss army knife, and of course, plenty of candy, cause you can never have too much of that.

I hear ya on the pockets. Horse had huge pockets on the outside and two even bigger ones on the bottom of the insides. No need for a bag. I'd take my umbrella snacks books etc....damn I miss that coat. but it just doesn't get cold enough here to wear it...plus it was adding to upper back and shoulder pain. At least I've finally found a bag I like the look of that's big enough for all the stuff I cart around.

AAAAAHHHHHH! GEDDOUTTAMYHEAD!

I've had mine for 30 years and more. Saved my ass for me, or at least my back, when I came off the bike in the rain. I was able to slide on my back, and the jacket doesn't look any the worse for it. And yeah, the pockets all seem to be in the perfect place and are the perfect size for all sorts of great stuff.

And all that's great, but that's not WHY it's my favorite item of clothing. The really big reasons are less tangible. My dad gave it to me when he retired from the U.S. Army. Also, any time I put it on, I *KNOW* that winter is finally here. It rarely gets cold enough down here to wear that jacket - maybe a few times a year.

But yeah, it's a helluva thing, that jacket. Comfortable, well-made, damned near indestructible.

Yep, which is why I gave it to my niece - that was my original issue, Mikey, still has the discolored and slightly ragged spots where I ripped off my unit patchs and threw them at the finance officer over my back pay, it's BEEN places, that one has.

My new one is jet black with no identifying marks, and is also lined with tasershield and ballistic cloth, which isn't at all obvious due to it's construction and color - although even with the liner in it, it's a bit LIGHT for the winters around here, I got a full suit for that, used to use a snowmobile suit, but I got a padded, insulated workmans coverall and customized that - it's good down to about -30F

Oh, speakin of, someone asked me exactly what I would DO if I caught someone tryin to B&E out there when it was knee deep snow and that bloody cold - ya know what I told em ?
"threaten them with a water pistol"
Bonus points if you can figure just why that is an extremely evil thing to do.

MINCINGBEAST

I wrinkle my tremendous joo nose in disdain at your sartorial deficiencies. I am partial to three piece suits. I like sweater vests, too.

The single most wonderful garment I have ever owned, and sweated in, was a vintage pink ruffled tuxedo shirt. I used to wear it with a leather vest, and black jeans that left little to the imagination (the word little was deliberately chosen). It was the equivalent of a Jayne hat, I suppose, in that it demonstrated my good taste, and was a challenge: come and fuck with me, please. Were I not about 40lbs too strapping, I would still wear the cursed, frayed thing out whenever I was in a bad mood. Ah, to be a dandy again, and not a beast...

Hi Chris!
Hubby was working at Circuit City when first we met... I was working atta gas station across the street and he came in for Gatorade every day (he worked in the warehouse?) and he was wearing a celtic design necklace and I asked him about it one day...and well, the 31st of this month will be our tenth anniversary. Funny, I wasn't EVEN looking to date at the time.... I think he had a dark kahki jacket from there, is that the one you're talking about? Or were you working up in the front where they actually let people see you?

And since you asked...My favorite article of clothing gave up the ghost last year... it was a heavy and well made cotton sweater mom got me 12? years ago, it was an old fashion tapestry design in fall colouring and it was reversable to boot...and I couldn't bear to part with it so I cut off the sleeves and made a really comfy pillow out of it...Also, I bought a shirt four years ago that I will probably never be able to wear but it reminds me of something Inara would wear so I'm going to frame it and use it in my Firefly themed dressing room! SOON to be completed, YAY!

Yeah, the warehouse one. Surprisingly warm given the lack of bulk.

I would not know what to do without my many different colored cardigans... it's how I get away with wearing jeans and tees to work. Throw the cardigan and some nice shoes on and presto work attire... I am somewhat resistant to dressing like an adult.

Black leather longcoat I've been wearing for 15 years or so. A pair of very stretched out gray sweaters, and lately, my Batman boxer shorts.

Oooh I love cardigans too. my favourite one is skinny bright grass green with 3/4 sleeves. Not wearing jeans, t-shirts and sneakers to work is the one thing I'm gonna hate about being a speech pathologist...I just cannot get the knack of wearing "smart-officey" clothes without looking dorky or uncomfortable I mean I can put them together ok and have on a number of occasions been singled out by lecturers as a model for what we should wear on prac but I just don't feel right. wore my "prac" clothes to after school care one day as I didn't have time to change. One of my favourite year 6 girls looked me up and down, shook her head and said "no offence but what you're wearing would look really good on someone else...but its kind of wearing you really isn't it?" they're never wrong.

America loves a winner!

My worn brown leather bomber jacket. Only get to wear it a few months out of the year, but it rocks.
