Seriously. Not just for the shows, the characters or stuff like that. But for showing you points of view or concepts that you otherwise would not have known, or making clear things which might have been sorta kinda on your radar, but you've never bothered to really look at, until HE made mention of it, or made it a subject of some story line.

Thanks Joss!

( and by Joss, I of course mean his extended cast of writers and such, not just THE MAN all by his lonesome. )

BORIS

I'm thankful to Joss and Co for the way they interpret things I've always been aware of and then turn them into exhilirating intelligent entertainment. I can honestly say I haven't learned anything new or been inspired to think about things differently because of Whedonverse creations/ideas. his themes are pretty familiar to me, having been a profoundly observant being who's existed on the fringes of society (and for the most part chosen to) I get where it's all coming from. I do appreciate how Whedonesque stuff has created a medium for me and others to connect with kindred spirits and it has to some extent made our particular brand of social "uniquism" kinda desirable. e.g.People seem to have a genuine affection for fireflyfans as opposed to say trekkies and want to taste a slice of what brings us together from our diverse paths...not trying to be judgemental, just an observation. Also I love the way Whedon stuff gets referenced in other stuff. It's a big part of modern pop culture and we're part of that...so big Fat thankyou Joss Whedon and friends. having said that, I have the same feelings about Judd Apatow and co and Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg and Co, Bill Prady and Co for the same reasons. would love for them all to do something together. And the Robot chicken and Venture Bros guys too.

It doesn't have to be any major epiphany like thing, but more of a subtle, " oh yeah! ".

One small example is the Albatross line from Serenity.

MOST folks, like the Operative, viewed an Albatross as a sign of bad luck. Mal correctly reminds us that, it only became that way after some idiot killed it.

I pointed out this finer detail to a friend, and they realized that they hadn't thought of it that way. The Albatross wasn't initially synonymous with bad luck, but as the story unfolds, that what so many are left with thinking.

WHOZIT

It's been awhile since you can say I thanked him. I'm not going the thank him for "Dollhouse" because it was not his best work, but I supported the show and told everyone who would listen to watch it. When the "Avengers" comes out I'll go see it, and if it's as good as I hope it is I'll give Joss a great big At-A-Boy!

For the poetically challenged like me, the albatross poem The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner can be heard in either of two versions (1798, 1800): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rime_of_the_Ancient_Mariner
The 1798 print version: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Rime_of_the_Ancyent_Marinere_%281798

"Modernized spelling" 1817 print version: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Rime_of_the_Ancient_Mariner_%281817%

THE OPERATIVE - "That girl will rain destruction down on you and your ship. She's an albatross, Captain."
MAL - "Way I remember it, albatross was a ship's good luck... til some idiot killed it. (to Inara) Yes, I've read a poem. Try not to faint."

Would I have looked that up except for Serenity? Thank Joss.

WISHIMAY

I didn't get the albatross thing either, the first time I saw the movie I looked that up, too.
It would make a decent question at the next con- Did he read that in school, or was it someone else's idea? Good line though.

My kid wore her Jayne hat last night to our local Fall Festival, guess it was too dark or she was too short or it was too busy but I was disappointed that no one figured it out.

I also have this crazy idea of starting a kinda faction within the browncoats.... The Order of the Parasol and The Cobb Club (we already have Fillionaires) where people wear their hats or take parasols in public and report back here when they catch someone, or have decals on cars or have secret handshakes...A little junior high-ish but it sure sounds like fun ta me! At the Backwoods bash several gals had chinese folding fans, maybe that could be the symbol for Inara's girls!! (and guys if you wanna go there). I'm not sure which club I'd join....?

I liked that Mal knew about the Albatross. My parents weren't well educated and subsequently i was encouraged to read alot when I was growing up, so I got the reference and appreciated it. I particularly liked the comment that followed re Mal Having read poetry...I always see Mal as working class but well read...like my folks and me.
