America loves a winner!

I hear there's no water left in the # 2 (?) reactor, and that if they don't get the power wired up to the cooling systems.....well.

As to the spike and drop in radiation....what's that about ?

That's...

Fail. Just, fail. Not only do you blow up the containment, but this will take out the other reactors too. We're not even talking about radiation along the lines of an atomic bomb or Chernobyl anymore. We're talking about six or more Chernobyls.

The instruments I can only assume are inside the power plants. The spikes are associated with hydrogen explosions as the zirconium casing for the rods melted off, leaving the rods bare to each other.

The explosions then released radiation into the environment, which is the only reason I can think of why the readings would drop down again. So far, it's done this without fully breaching containment as far as I know, which is why the whole reactor cores aren't exposed yet (which would result in all the water flash vaporizing and kaboom and much more radiation which will not go away).

Operation to use helicopters to dump seawater into the reactors are underway. Due to radioactivity levels, the helicopters can't hover and can't fly very low. Most of the water is being dispersed rather than hitting the intended targets.

1 sieverts = 100 rems. 12,000 would be 120 rems.

Here is the effects it'll have on the body in rems.

5-20 Possible late effects; possible chromosomal damage.

20-100 Temporary reduction in white blood cells.

100-200 Mild radiation sickness within a few hours: vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue; reduction in resistance to infection.

200-300 Serious radiation sickness effects as in 100-200 rem and hemorrhage; exposure is a Lethal Dose to 10-35% of the population after 30 days (LD 10-35/30).

300-400 Serious radiation sickness; also marrow and intestine destruction; LD 50-70/30.

400-1000 Acute illness, early death; LD 60-95/30.

1000-5000 Acute illness, early death in days; LD 100/1

Question is, how close to the radiation source were measurements taken, 10 miles away or at the wall of the containment building?

120 rem seems right, considering accounts of most people potentially exposed doing all right so far, but with some scattered cases of sickness. That is assuming they're not hiding the truly sick.

That's bound to get higher in the near-ish future.

Latest update:

Efforts to cool down the reactors using helicopters to drop water was abandoned after 8 flights due to water being dispersed in the air before reaching its target. A total of nearly 200 flights were required, but was never made.

Efforts to cool down the reactors using 5 fire trucks armed with water cannons have also failed. The water failed to reach the intended target and the fire trucks have pulled back due to high radiation levels.

Efforts is now being made to restore power to the plant by running new power lines from the electrical grid. However, even with the restoration of power, the water pumps will have to be repaired first due to damages.

The helicopters... what a Fail. That seems so desperate an attempt for the very reason it didn't work - comparatively low volumes of water for the task, slow delivery, hard to focus, and off shore winds - that it has to be a big red flag that they would even try it. They are reaching.

The NYTimes this morning is even less optimistic. Today's paper focuses on how much worse US nuclear experts think the problem is than do the Japanese.

“We believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures,” Mr. Jaczko said (chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission).

His statement was quickly but not definitively rebutted by officials of Tokyo Electric, the plant’s operator.

“We can’t get inside to check (!!!!!!!!!!), but we’ve been carefully watching the building’s environs, and there has not been any particular problem,” Hajime Motojuku, a spokesman for Tokyo Electric, said Thursday morning in Japan.

Later, a spokesman for Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, Yoshitaka Nagayama, was more equivocal, saying, “Because we have been unable to go to the scene, we cannot confirm whether there is water left or not in the spent fuel pool at Reactor No. 4.”

Sss - what? So where's their optimism coming from?

My favorite cluster fuck quote of the day:

"General Electric said it will send about 10 (they don't even know the number) gas turbine generators to Japan to help replace lost power generating capacity. >> Michael Tetuan, a spokesman for the company, said that the operators of the damaged plant had requested generators, but he did not know what they would be used for. <<

What I don't understand is why they can't fly a remote control helicopter into the place to visually verify the status of the water level in the spent fuel rod pool. Something as simple as a Dragonfly would work or numerous others used by various film makers.

Corporate News is reporting that USAF/CIA "may" publicly fly a Global Hawk robot over the Jap nuke plant today.

Privately They've probably been doing that since Day 1, and keeping the radiation measurements Top Secret.

I live 10 miles from a nuke plant, that I can see outside my window. 5 years ago when the dam hydro plant next door CAUGHT ON FIRE AND "COULD NOT BE EXTINGUISHED" the nuke plant had a "little emergency", due to loss of electricity for cooling water. THERE WERE NO BACKUP POWER GENERATORS FOR THE NUKE PLANT IN USA... AN IRANIAN CITIZEN WAS IN CHARGE OF BUILDING THAT NUKE PLANT IN USA, until last year when he cheated on his wife and tried to hide his paychecks from US divorce court by wiring dollars to his bank account in Iran.

My local nuke bomb factory at ORNL is the world's largest nuke waste site, where Commie Russia and LIBYA sends its nuke waste, where THOUSANDS of foreign citizens work stealing USA's Top Secrets. Even the director of ORNL was an illegal alien who could not leave USA or Border Patrol would not allow him to re-enter USA (hahaha laughed the local Bohemian Grover News Corporation).

We are frakked.

There's a lot of unknowns listed on the most damaged reactors... I suspect they figure they're beyond saving and aren't bothering with situation updates anymore.

also worrisome: temperatures in the water in the reactors thought secure are increasing.

This latest bit of news isn't good, but the US was likely right in setting the evacuation zone at a 50 mile radius.

Quote:

High radiation detected 30km from nuke plant

Japan's science ministry says relatively high radiation levels have been detected on 2 consecutive days about 30 kilometers northwest of the quake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The radiation measured 170 microsieverts per hour on Thursday and 150 microsieverts on Friday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano says the government will take appropriate measures if this level of contamination continues in the area for a long period. But he says this would be unlikely.

Radiation was measured for 2 hours from 10AM on Friday at 18 spots in areas 30 to 60 kilometers from the plant in Fukushima Prefecture.

The highest reading of 150 microsieverts per hour was detected at around 1:30 PM local time, about 30 kilometers northwest of the plant. The location is within the zone where residents have been instructed to stay indoors.

Readings of 170 microsieverts were recorded at the same location at 2 PM on the previous day, Thursday.

Experts say exposure to this amount of radiation for 6 to 7 hours would result in absorption of the maximum level considered safe for one year.

The ministry also observed radiation levels of 0.5 to 52 microsieverts per hour at other observation points within a 30 to 60 kilometer radius of the plant. It says these levels are all higher than normal, but not an immediate threat to health.

The government has evacuated residents living within a 20 kilometer radius of the plant, and instructed those in a 20 to 30 kilometer radius to stay indoors.

The ministry is full of it - Yuriko, despite the protestations of both her family and myself, returned to Japan from Italy, and according to the geiger counter she brought with her, the radiation is both stronger than the ministry is admitting, and has covered a longer range, as she has encountered great difficulty in finding a safe route through the chaos because of this.

Admittedly, she could be reading it wrong, but as smart as she is, I doubt it.

Tokyo has only 8 million residents. It's also 150 miles away. Maybe what they really meant was a combination of cities along that north eastern sea front, but said Tokyo instead because it was more alarming and because Americans can't do geography for crap.

Upwards estimates of deaths from Chernobyl, including thyroid cancer, were 200,000, but then again that was from the WHO and greenpeace, so that could be wrong in either direction.

Latest update of the Fukushima reactors from REUTERS. I know the Japanese say that we here in the US are hyping everything, but one have to admit. When looking at the report below, it really doesn't look good.

Quote:

TOKYO | Tue Mar 22, 2011 8:54pm EDT
(Reuters) - Following are main developments after a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated northeast Japan and crippled a nuclear power station, raising the risk of uncontrolled radiation.

- Nuclear plant still emitting radiation but source unclear, says IAEA. The UN atomic watchdog says Japan has not given some information relating to one reactor.

- Smoke and steam seen rising from two of the most threatening reactors, No.2 and No.3, at the Fukushima nuclear plant on Tuesday, denting hopes of immediate progress in bringing them under control.

- Core of reactor No. 1 also a worry with temperature touching 380-390 Celsius (715-735 Fahrenheit), plant operator says. Reactor built to run at a temperature of 302 C (575 F).

- Engineers have re-established power cables to all six reactors and have started a pump at one of them to cool overheating fuel rods. Lighting had been restored at one of the control rooms, local media said.

* Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan says people should refrain from consuming leafy vegetables from Fukushima prefecture and tells the governor of Ibaraki prefecture to hold off on shipments of raw milk and parsley due to the nuclear crisis.

- Japan's health ministry says it has detected above-safety level radiation in 11 types of vegetables from the Fukushima area where the nuclear plants are located, Kyodo news agency reports on Wednesday.

- The World Health Organization said on Tuesday the detection of radiation in food is a more serious problem than first expected, and food contamination is not a localized problem. It says, however, there is no evidence of contaminated food from Fukushima reaching other countries.

- Plant operator TEPCO says a small trace of radiation had been found in the Pacific nearby, but officials stressed the levels were minute and posed no immediate danger.

- Miniscule numbers of radioactive particles believed to have come from the crippled nuclear power plant have been detected as far away as Iceland, diplomatic sources say. But the tiny traces were far too low to cause any harm.

- China and South Korea say they will toughen radioactivity tests on imports of Japanese food, and Japan tells four prefectures near the nuclear plant to halt shipments of spinach.

- Government also bans milk shipments from Fukushima province. Japanese food produced outside the nuclear crisis zone is safe.

- Official death toll from earthquake and tsunami exceeds 9,000, Kyodo news agency reports national police as saying.

- The government estimates the total damage from the quake will reach 15-25 trillion yen ($185-308 billion), the Nikkei newspaper reports.

* TEPCO, the crippled plant's operator, may eventually require more than one trillion yen in financing to help it overcome the disaster, Jiji news says.

Neutron beam observed 13 times at crippled Fukushima nuke plan

Electric Power Co. said Wednesday it has observed a neutron beam, a kind of radioactive ray, 13 times on the premises of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after it was crippled by the massive March 11 quake-tsunami disaster.

TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear plant, said the neutron beam measured about 1.5 kilometers southwest of the plant’s No. 1 and 2 reactors over three days from March 13 and is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.02 microsieverts per hour and that this is not a dangerous level.

The utility firm said it will measure uranium and plutonium, which could emit a neutron beam, as well.

In the 1999 criticality accident at a nuclear fuel processing plant run by JCO Co. in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, uranium broke apart continually in nuclear fission, causing a massive amount of neutron beams.

In the latest case at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, such a criticality accident has yet to happen.

But the measured neutron beam may be evidence that uranium and plutonium leaked from the plant’s nuclear reactors and spent nuclear fuels have discharged a small amount of neutron beams through nuclear fission.

Richard Lahey, who was head of safety research for boiling-water reactors at General Electric when the company installed the units at Fukushima, told the Guardian on Tuesday workers at the site appeared to have “lost the race” to save the reactor.

“The indications we have, from the reactor to radiation readings and the materials they are seeing, suggest that the core has melted through the bottom of the pressure vessel in unit two, and at least some of it is down on the floor of the drywell,” Lahey said.

They probably should have entombed it right when explosions started removing parts of the containment buildings. This goes back to my idea of why don't they build nuclear power plants underground, possibly dug into the bedrock. Pipe in groundwater from outside the bed rock, then, if it goes haywire, evacuate everyone via mine shaft or elevator then collapse it.

Prevention is worth a trillion-dollar cure...

Once meltdown starts it cannot be entombed in concrete, because the nuclear reaction will continue and explode.

Only cure after meltdown is to detonate a bomb inside each reactor building, to throw the fissile material so far apart it cannot react.

Chernobyl was a dry reactor with an explosion which stopped the reaction. Fukushima is a wet reactor where meltdown never stops...

Yeah, but at least if it's in the bed rock and you collapse it you limit impact to groundwater and air. It's why when someone tests a nuke they drill into granite stock to detonate. The only concern you have there is if the blast triggers an earthquake on a nearby fault, but that's easily solved by something else I've been saying: don't build in earthquake zones.

As I see it the possible impacts are worse than the meltdown itself, so you ought to build your plant right off to limit that impact. Put in all the safety measures you want to stop the meltdown, fine. But nature and Murphy's law will find a way, so when you're designing and building treat it like it WILL happen, even if the risk is low.

I've decided that we don't have any business messing with nuclear anymore, I was open to it before this, thought maybe we could make it work, after all France does it fine. But I've changed my mind. I understand our curiosity and experimentation with it back when, we didn't know what would happen and wanted to figure it out. But we know now that it is a force beyond our control, it is a powerful and, quite frankly, twisted force. Having your face melt off and not even feeling it? That's twisted. I've made my decision, we checked it out, we used it, we learnt what it could do, and now I want us to be done and not mess with stuff beyond our control, because we really can't control it, we thought we could but we just can't. Sounds extreme I know, but that's the conclusion I have come to for myself. I guess if someone thinks its safe then they can do it, but I will have no part in encouraging it.

"12 years ago workers were exposed to such a criticality, and 2 were dead within 7 months. The workers now are not being supplied with dosimetry meters...But we at Fox News have been issued one."

Neutron Blue Beams Shooting From Fukushima Reactor

By Gary Jacobucci
4-4-11

Neutron 'blue beams' can now be seen shooting from one of the damages reactors night and day.

"International nuclear experts believe that melted fuel is causing a small, uncontrolled chain reaction there sending out a burst of heat, radiation and a blue flash of light what the nuclear industry calls a localized criticality. From what we understand, this is not good news for the workers trying to prevent a nuclear meltdown there."

One person gave this reflection on blue beams He was a medical student when the nuclear reactor was installed at UT. The joke on campus was that the good news was that they had an ultraviolet detector that could pick up this type of radiation leak - the bad news was that if you were in a position to detect these 'blue beams' that you were going to be dead in a few weeks.

Besides improvements in nuclear power generation like supercharging the uranium fuel in the reactors with plutonium (MOX fuel), radiation is finding more applications in medicine.

In addition to irradiating parts of the body where cancer is found, one fellow here in town had radiation injected into his blood stream for a diagnostic from a high tech piece of equipment at the Elko Hospital. He was told it would be fine, but to stay away from his children for a few days. When they couldn't get the machine to work right for the diagnostic, they told him he would have to go through the procedure again (he said no).

The FDA pushing for the irradiation of food to keep us safe of course.

http://www.activistpost.com/2011/03/codex-alimentarius-irradiated-food
.html

The FDA acknowledges the fact that irradiation changes the makeup of food when it says in the same proposal that "Irradiation has various effects on foods that may cause changes in the characteristics of the food. Such changes may occur in the food's organoleptic, nutritional, or functional properties that would not be noticeable at the point of purchase but could be apparent when consumed or cooked."

The USDA allows irradiation of food and calls it "electronic pasteurization" so as not to alarm consumers. An official with the USDA who helped to ease food radiation restrictions now is with the UN doing the same with international guidelines. Many scientists believe that irradiation causes genetic and molecular changes that increase the risk of cancer in those who consume the food.

Then there are nuclear weapons. There are the heavy bombs and the ideology of M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) which also keeps us safe.

And now we have the use of depleted uranium. Prior to the War on Terrorism, it was thought to be a crime against humanity to spread nuclear waste on an enemies nation due to the long term toxic effect it would have on future generations.

But when it was found that the elements in depleted uranium could penetrate armor like nothing else, the toxic effects were no longer a concern.

DU ignites upon firing, filing the air with microscopic irradiated particles on both the giving and receiving end of the munitions.

Aside from destroying the health of the soldiers, the DNA mutations are passed into the womb...

http://www.tetrahedron.org/articles/gulf_war_syndrome/uranium_infantic
ide.html

The use of nuclear, atomic, radiological, etc. is M.A.D. and will be our demise on this planet if we continue down this path.

Tokyo (CNN) -- Japan began dumping thousands of tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean on Monday, an emergency move officials said was needed to curtail a worse leak from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

In all, about 11,500 tons of radioactive water that has collected at the nuclear facility will be dumped into the sea, officials said Monday, as workers also try to deal with a crack that has been a conduit for contamination....
