Sorry Riona, I took the liberty of starting this thread for you, and in another forum, since you hesitated to do so yourself.

Quote:

I was about to post this really bizarre and off topic piece I wrote about sex, but then I decided not to because "Its not in the spirit of the holiday" (without looking it up tell me which episode that quote is from).

Basically it was about double standards, how something grosses one person out but the thing they don't mind talking grosses another person out. I'll save it for later, actually I'll just write it again because I don't save things.

So, you were saying ?

( and I'm drawing a blank on your 'holiday' quote. Dammit )

I love the title of this thread!

I'll give you a hint, the quote is from a Firefly episode. I'll give you another hint later if you can't think of it. And the quote has nothing to do with the content of this thread, it just fit well in the sentence I was writing in the other.

Okay, so Byte's goofy pairing post reminded me of something that is an oddity to me. Byte gets totally grossed out when people talk about sex in regard to fluids, mechanics, etc. But the idea of pairing people up, in various and sundry fashions, doesn't phase her. Similar example: My best friend Mary will say things to me in certain situations that she would never say aloud to other people, or even me, in other contexts. She also seems to be grossed out by very little of what other people talk about or do, but she refuses to wear clothes that show off her ... womanhood.

Its interesting to think about how different people, even coming from the same ideological baseline, have very different ideas of what is, and isn't, apropriate. There's the obvious things of course, but I'm thinking of the ones that are like my examples. I guess I fall into that too. I like wearing things that show off my womanhood, I'm very straight forward in my speech about sex et al, but there is a very clear line between what I will say and what I won't say. And it doesn't seem to be where other people's line is, even other people who believe similarly to me. One of my things is "If you can't say what it is in a bare bones clear cut fashion without blushing then why do you approve of it?"

I have no clue where this is going, but I figured it didn't belong in our positive atributes thread because it would be distracting.

I'm sorry it isn't as sexy as you were hoping for AU. :( But I still love your title, ;)

Oh, this just sets a gong off in my noggin', and makes me think of what Atherton Wing says to Inara, in SHINDIG...

Oh, she blushes.

Not many in your line of work do
that. You, you are a singular woman
and I find,

I find I admire you more and more.

Yeah, I had to look up the specifics of that quote, but I'm still refusing to admit defeat on the 'holiday' line. Dammit. I mean, obscure lines often stick w/ me... like Wash's " 3 point, 4 hour... should do it ". hee hee oh, that still cracks me up.

I can't say I understand it either. I'm really new to shipping, I used to have a much more negative response to romance tropes, and sometimes it still annoys me. But sometimes I get all fangirlish about it.

But I'm still a total prude and not comfortable with explicit or even vaguely allusive talk.

Here's another, I absolutely love Men In Tights Robin Hood, I like it more than the real Robin Hood. But Mary thinks its crude. And yet other things that you'd think she'd find crude or ooky don't phase her at all. I love Men In Tights but she won't watch it with me. We're Mach!

This thread needs to be sexier. DT is still waiting for his "seven minutes in a closet". :)

Ha ha..that was the only thing that I could think of, but I had the wrong ep. I was thinking it was tied into her 'trying to fix the bible' tirade, from Jaynestown, because I couldn't think of any holiday they celebrated, during the show. I almost was gonna guess Shepherd Book, from the same episode, but it just wasn't sounding right. And now I know why.

I feel bad, but not entirely. My gut was telling me 'River', but it just wasn't registering as to the when or the where.

Also interesting, I like Robin Hood: Men in Tights as well, and crude comedy. I guess because it doesn't take itself seriously and is mocking itself, whereas most romantic flicks take themselves seriously and it seems like bathos to me.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Narm

However, I did not like Knocked Up, which was about as crude as a pregnancy comedy could be - the only thing I thought was funny was the pink-eye.

I love Men in Tights, too
You be suprised how many people I know couldn't watch that or other spoof movies, because they don't understand humor. I know people that have gotten really angry over something I thought was hilarious. It's one of those things that has to be developed to be understood. If you don't understand what others find funny, how can you make a joke or relate to others in that way? I think it's sad ta not have a sense of humor, one of the truly great things about being human.

About the other thing, I'll talk about anything with anyone. If all things in life were equal, I would have made a great Doc. Plague, pestilence, bring it. I guess I have a clinical side that I can turn on for that. Some people don't. I'm fascinated by all things biological (esp neurological ) and have an understanding about biology that some nurses I've talked to don't...

My family, however, has never ever been able to talk about emotions or what they are thinking or feeling. I've never figured out whether they feel things too deeply or are afraid of getting judged for their emotions and this has apparently been going on for generations. On the flip side, my kid CAN'T shut up about what she thinking or feeling, heh.

Okay, so I thought of a great use for this thread.

What are your favorite romantic/sex scenes in movies/shows?

My favorites are: Cold Mountain, when they are finally reunited and have sex and a child is conceived, the one time they are together, very well done scene.

Braveheart: The marriage scene and the after-marriage scene, wow, just, wow, I cry every time, its overwhelming. Wow.

Don't laugh, if you do I'll laugh at your favorite sex scenes.

Well, I suppose ANYTHING is funny if it's sped up a lot with Yakety Sax playing over it.

So I'll go with that.

Most of the time they're just gross, if not pointless.

That's why my favorites are always ones that I feel add to the film. Excessive or gratuitous sex scenes are boring and we fast forward through them at my house. But we don't fast forward through the ones on Cold Mountain and Braveheart. My dad is notorious for fast forwarding through sex scenes, but he leaves Braveheart alone, he must think its beautiful and well done too.

I guess as I get older the sex scenes not as fascinating. I have become a connoisseur of the tete a tete, the private little stolen moments. A brush of the hand, a knowing stare, she blushes, a deep sigh...

THEN maybe eventually a tastefully artistic love scene that leaves more to the imagination than anything.

One of the things that got me right off about Firefly. Those little moments where Mal and Inara are whispering together leave me dizzy.

Mostly I joke about it, and people reach for the brain bleach. I guess technically that doesn't count as writing...

On the other hand, I think that's about as long term and meaningful as any of Jayne's interests will ever get.

It's also one of the few crack ships suggested by some of the the show writers to have some basis. One of them wrote a story where Mal speculates that Jayne's relationship with his guns will ultimately be what ends him. That, or drinking too much and mistaking them while in a stupor for women...
