As in, which of his 3 t.v. shows ( Buffy,Angel,Firefly ) had the better 'actor'. Not character, or the people you think are the shiniest in real life, but which regular cast member do YOU think stands above the others as being the best ?

Now, 'best' may be a bit subjective, so I'm not necessarily asking who's done the most work. Some of our fine folk haven't seen much at all in the way of t.v. gigs, here in the US. But maybe awards? Nominations ? I'm not really a connoisseur of fine acting, so those who are more inclined, feel free to jump in and offer who, and why, you think is the better actor.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

That's a tough one, since they had such great ensembles on each show. Not sure why you didn't include Dollhouse, but for that one I would choose Enver Gjokaj, with Olivia Williams in second place.

Going out on a limb here, but if you are talking about the acting on Joss' shows alone, not their general body of work, here's what I'd say:

Buffy - Sarah Michelle Gellar

Angel - Amy Acker

Firefly - Nathan Fillion

Buffy : Nicolas Brendon
Angel: J. August Richards
Firefly: Nathan Fillion.

But it's all extremely close. With Buffy while I think Nicolas Brendon was consistently the best, I don't think I've been as moved by anyone as much as when Emma Caulfield delivers Anya's feelings - or lack off - regarding Joyce's death. That was simply fantastic.

My bad. Dollhouse too. Thanks

And to clarify, I didn't mean ONLY from their work from the Whedon 'verse, but over all.

Nicholas Brendon is curious, as I've not seen him in much of anything, since Buffy. Neither have I seen Charisma Carpenter too often either. ( I guess a separate thread could be on which cast member has worked the LEAST since their show was cancelled, but that's sorta mean )

Amy has to get a nod from me, as her portrayal of Illyria was so much a contrast from Fred. Sure, there was the blue make up, but man... one of my all time favs.

If we consider the entire Whedonverse, then I'd have to choose...

Chiwetel Ejiofor

My money is on Alexis Denisof.

Of all the characters in the Whedonverse, I think Wesley undergoes the most evolution, and Denisof successfully portrays every step. If you look at his other roles (for example, on HIMYM or in MAAN), we see him successfully portraying completely different character types.

Joss has a talent for finding the right person for the role, but in may cases, those folk seem to excel at a single role and not much more. They may have depth in that role, but not a lot of range. Denisof demonstrates both.

I'm limiting myself primarily to folks that Joss has "discovered," not including folks like the Operative or Agent Coulson. That makes it harder.

Alexis is a good bet.

I guess what made me think of this was seeing Anthony Head in Warehouse 13. He's been in a thing or two, I suppose, since Buffy, but I've not seen much of him.

Ron Glass, well, he's chosen to not act so much lately, hasn't he? ( He really needs to update his Imdb profile pic... lol )

FIREFLYPASSENGER

To me "the best" is the actor who is Oscar caliber. Someone who can do both comedy and drama. Someone who can transform himself into someone new.

I love Alexis Denisof. He was marvelous in Much Ado About Nothing. Wesley's character arc remains my favorite in all he Whedonverse.

Reed Diamond is enchanting and delightful as the Prince Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing and in Franklin and Bash there is no Prince in Damien.

Amy Acker is great as Fred, Illyria, In Dollhouse and as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing.

Jewel Staite is wonderful as Kaylee in Firefly and then as Heidi in Wonderfalls, two very different girls.

Sean Maher as Simon in Firefly then as a Girls Gone Wild Producer in CSI: Miami was a complete transformation.

I've been a long time fan of Clark Gregg he is always a joy to watch.

My vote for the Best Actor in the Whedonverse goes to Alan Tudyk hands down.

On CSI he played a pedophile in Burn Out.
On Dollhouse he played Alpha.
On Firefly the happy go lucky Wash.
On Suburgatory the Yuppy Dentist Noah. Then we have so many movies with so many characters.
Tucker the Hillbilly - Tucker and Dale vs Evil (HILARIOUSLY FUNNY).
Steve the Pirate - Dodgeball.
Sonny the Robot - I, Robot.
Gerhardt the Gay German drug addict stripper - 28 Days. He remains my favorite character
Wat - A Knight's Tale.
Simon - Death at a Funeral.
Ben Chapman the Racist Coach - 42.

Alan Tudyk transforms himself each time in each new character.

Joss' actors all have that special something that makes them special.

Then next actor in the Whedonverse to come close to Alan's talent in my opinion is Fran Kranz.

Topher the tech- Dollhouse.
Marty the druggy - Cabin in the Woods. Claudio the young soldier - Much Ado About Nothing.

Alan Tudyk and Fran Kranz are both Oscar caliber in my opinion. They are both great talents.

Ashamed that Alan didn't even come to mind. ( Guess I picked the wrong week to stop sniffin' glue! ) Great suggestion.

I don't know how Joss does it, but his list of actors he finds and then keeps using is a virtual treasure trove of awesome talent. One of the many things I really dig about how he does his business.

Agreed.

And as for Dollhouse I would go for Harry Lennix. I always felt he was in a different show compared to the others.

In terms of considering their work beyond the Whedonverse, I'm afraid that I'm not well enough informed to make a decision on that but for sheer variety of work then Adam Baldwin continues to impress me.

Not sure why, but Whedon works seem to be more difficult to separate actor and writing.

On Dollhouse, I always felt I was waiting to see what else would come from Amy Acker.

For Firefly, I kept feeling drawn by Inara, not sure if only due to tension/chemistry with Mal. But Summer crafted delivery of lines that nobody else in cast could make sense of during readings.
