After the first few times James Randi caught Sylvia Browne tricking people out of money, her career should have ended. But it didn't. Why not? James Randi's style of quiet rationalism wasn't strong enough to counteract the guile of lively Sylvia Browne.

For Sylvia Browne, substitute still living politicians such as Dick Cheney and Paul Ryan. Or an athlete such as Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Rationality just works too slowly to be effective in destroying the reputations of frauds before they can do real damage. People want to believe until it is impossible to believe.

Why the hell interject unrelated political commentary into this thread? Why bring up Lance Armstrong? Isn't the fraud that WAS Sylvia Brown story enough? Randi has devoted his life to call out frauds like her & those who peddle false HOPE.

I agree. Randi needs a louder voice. Penn & Teller are fine disciples , but while they may agree with him often, his crusade isn't necessary theirs.

I post this in tribute to what Randi has done.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Attacking Sylvia Browne, like James Randi did, while she is alive and in the middle of swindling some gullible souls is always in perfect taste. On the other hand, it is in poor taste celebrating somebody dying. You know?

I do agree with you that people just desperately want to purchase false hope. I'm not trying to minimize what James Randi does, but a million-fold more gullible people have been tricked by politicians (or Armstrong, who was in the news yesterday) than by psychics like Sylvia Browne. I feel sad for gullible people, the kind of people who blindly believe psychics or just give their loyalty blindly to the headmen in their political tribe and church.

The problem really isn't Browne or politicians, because these crafty people will always be with us. The problem is how people think about Browne and politicians. The Amazing Randi can't do all the thinking for us, even if we were willing to delegate that responsibility. There is not that much rationality, as practiced by James Randi with psychics, in the world. Most people can't reliably tell the difference between rationality and proofless, glib rationalizations used by psychics and politicians.

People need more accurate memories and more thoughtful cynicism when dealing with crafty people such as Browne, may she RIP. Or Dick Cheney, may he burn and acrid, eyestinging smoke rise forever.

Anywhoo... I'm glad Sylvia has stopped lying to folks, making $ off of scamming the gullible. I wish she had stopped when she was still alive. She chose ... poorly.
