Don't slam a movie you haven't seen!!!!!!!!

Ok, I have been a little unnerved by the recent posts slamming I Robot.

To start out I am a fan of the work of Asimov and I consider his stories to be visionary.

With that said I must say that I don't think it is cool for people to be overly critical of the movie without even seeing it.

As far as I am concerned Will Smith has never dissapointed me in the films he has acted in, they have been enjoyable and a good time.

I understand that this movie is not an exact translation of the Book, but since when has that been a suprising or unheard of event with us in Fandom, there are reinterpretations all the time, and a lot of them can be and are very entertaining.

There is no doubt that those who are devoted to the works of Asimov would rather see a more direct translation of the stories onto film, I understand and appreciate this, however I think it is also important note that many who have worked on the movie have said that the Spirit of the Stories are there.

Also, and very important is that this is a big movie for Alan Tudyk, and if by chance he reads the messages here he might be bummed with all this criticism being thrown at a project that he put a lot of time and effort into, and that is not in the Browncoat spirit, I would hate to think that his introduction to this message board is reading negative messages about a movie he stars in.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought part of being a Browncoat was an understanding and appreciation of the actors themselves, not just the characters they portray in Firefly.
We should be supportive of their other projects.

Maybe the movie will suck, maybe it will blow our minds with it's greatness...I mean who knows, I don't and even if it did Suck I am not going to go on this message board and go off, That is not considerate to Alan's feelings.

I wouldn't go to a friend and tell them that something they worked really hard on, and took pride in Sucked!

Firefly has really helped a lot of us, and Alan especially has brought a lot of happiness to us in his portrayal of Wash, so lets just give this whole thing a chance.

All I have to say is SBC you nailed it right on the head. We have to support the actors in the movies that they make. I personally like Allan and I think he will to do a great job! Now people I hope the script is not written poorly, because it if is not then you know.

Asimov's books are great, hopefully the screen writer is good as well. Then again, don't judge a movie until you have seen it yourself. All I can say is I look forward to it coming out. Not as much as the BDM!!

On the other hand, as a singer and dancer, I have to say I rely on my friends to be honest. If something I create ... sucks ... please be honest enough to tell me and wake me up from my bubble of misguided bliss.

I am sensitive enough to tell my artist friends the truth without resorting to 'sucks'. If I truly believe that something could be improved ... or should just be dumpsterized at the earliest possible moment, I'll tell them.

Having said all that I will add that I do intend to see "I Robot" even though what I've seen of previews and interviews leads me to believe that this story shares nothing more with Azimov's vision than that of having a common name.

Will Smith always entertains me and Alan is one of my BDH's.

I was just thinking on this topic further, and my earlier no-holds-barred support was ill considered.

I have not, nor will not, at any time, watch a "Barney" movie.

There! I said it!

In the meantime, I look forward to 'I, Robot'. And another fab movie to mention is a UK one with Clive Owen called 'I, Croupier'. Very funny and well done ... fairly drips with cynicism. (sp?)

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I won't judge the film until I've seen it, but the main thing that upsets me and other Asimov fans is that they could have given it another title. How about "Robot Revolt" or something like that. The film began from a screenplay entitled "Hardwired" by Jeff Vintar, and did not receive the "I, Robot" title until after FOX decided they needed that to give the film some credibility, along with being able to use some of the character names and the Three Laws of Robotics. I'll let you know what I think of the film on its own in a few days.

First off, Alan Tudyk is the Man. If "I, Robot" was just him dressed up in a robot costume goofing off for two hours, I would go see it.

He is one of the funniest men alive, and I would hate to think that he would take any ire towards "I, Robot" personally.

As I have stated previously, the problem I have with "I, Robot" is in its genesis. It is a matter of principle. It was not supposed to be "I, Robot." If it started out as an adaptation, I think I could try to overlook any transgressions.

This is how I see things going down: they saw that they could capitalize on the Asimov name and the title recognition of "I, Robot" with sci-fi fans and it had a better chance of being successful. So they took the existing script, tailored it to fit their needs (i.e. plugging in some recognizable Asimov characters). From my stance, it seems to be purely a marketing decision.

I like Alex Proyas as a director. I love Alan Tudyk (platonically). I think Will Smith has done some good stuff, too. But I just can't get past the idea of that marketing ploy.

Now, I will admit that I could be completely wrong about that and the movie. I loathed the idea of a remake of The Italian Job, and bitched and moaned incessently about it. After all, they were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off. Anyway, some friends dragged me to see it, and it turned out to be a fun enough time.

So, yes, pre-judging a movie can prove faulty. If I see the movie and my pre-judgement in the matter turns out to be completely erroneous, I would freely admit it.

Anyway, where was I going with this? Oh, yeah, Alan Tudyk is awesome and I support him even if he might be in a project I don't care for. There are a lot of actors I like who aren't always in movies I like. It doesn't mean I like them any less.

Ellison is getting name-checked all over the board right now, but in support I'll paraphrase - "you're not entitled to your opinion, you are entitled to your informed opinion".

On another thread someone said you don't have a right to criticise a show unless you're a fan - plain wrong, but you certainly shouldn't destory a film you haven't seen.

If the trailer doesn't grab you - don't see it, the marketing people messed up - just remember that sometimes you get a good film marketed badly (Shawshank) or a bad film marketed well (just about every other summer blockbuster that opens huge and collapses under the weight of its own stink)

Will I see I, Robot? I don't know - its off the radar here in the UK, so I've seen very little - the effects look pretty cool, but I have little idea of how the story will hang together.

Let's be clear, I'm an Asimov fan, but if I watch this (and I suspect I will), I'll judge it on its own merits - what is clear from the advance word is that they are not trying to do a LOTR, and should not be judged as such - good or bad, it'll stand on its own merits.

Heck, if we judged everything on the concept, who would have said anything good about Johnny Depp starring in a movie based on a Disney ride?

Okay, that's a simpler and smarter way of putting what I said.

Case it point. I saw Batman and Robin. I want those two hours of my life back or else I intend to take a pack of smokes to everyone involved in making that film and make them smoke it - taking away two hours of their life.
