PERIDIDDLE

Well, mmkay, I have some random plans to make a 'Everything I Need To Know In Life I Learned From Joss Whedon' t-shirt via a place like CafePress or Zazzle...

Thing is, I'm gonna need quite a few quotes from our one and only fearless leader. I've spent a while combing the 'net (and looking at close to a hundred threads on this site...you know, do get a new little blurb at the top...) and I'm about out of quotes...

But that can't be right. SO, I'm sure a bunch of people here have their personal favorite quotes from Joss, and I would love you all forever if a few people could share theirs!

For reference, I guess, here are the ones I've found that I plan to use.

"Remember to always be yourself. Unless you suck."

"I also don't trust Caribou anymore. They're out there, on the tundra, waiting... Something's going down. I'm right about this."

"I'm very much of the 'make it dark, make it grim, make it tough,' but then, for the love of God, tell a joke."

"My visions of the future are always pretty much standard issue. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and there are flying cars."

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn."

"Quiet on the set... unless yer poultry."

"Every day's a negotiation and sometimes it's done with guns."

"Aliens, you know, that's something everybody else has done and is doing. It's a great metaphor to play with, but it's not what I'm interested in. I'm really interested in 'you are there,' in 'you are a part of this.' And I think aliens take you out of that. I also think everyone needs to spend some time away from latex." (Note: That's iffy. And yes, I changed the last sentence a tad bit for a better effect...but, yeah, might not use it.)

Thanks in advance!

"Bwaa...it's kind of a warrior...strikes fear into the hearts of..."

HONORBOUND

Did you see these at IMDB?

Personal quotes

[when asked how he designed each unstoppable season villain to be unique and threatening:] "We got into a problem with that. We kept saying, “This monster can't be killed.” It's like, “Well, have you used violence?” It was never about the unstoppableness. It was never about the monster. It was about the emotion. The monster came from that. We didn't always make them unique. We tried as much as possible, but what was important was how they related to the characters and that's what made them unique." [April 2003]

"But nowadays I'm really cranky about comics. Because most of them are just really, really poorly written soft-core. And I miss good old storytelling. And you know what else I miss? Super powers. Why is it now that everybody's like "I can reverse the polarity of your ions!" Like in one big flash everybody's Doctor Strange. I like the guys that can stick to walls and change into sand and stuff. I don't understand anything anymore. And all the girls are wearing nothing, and they all look like they have implants. Well, I sound like a very old man, and a cranky one, but it's true."

"It's fascinating to me, the shows that I've always loved the best, "Hill Street Blues" (1981), "Wiseguy," "Twin Peaks" (1990) have always been shows that did have accumulative knowledge. One of the reasons why "X Files, The" (1993) started to leave me cold was that after five years, I just started yelling at Scully, 'You're an idiot. It's a monster,' and I couldn't take it anymore. I need people to grow, I need them to change, I need them to learn and explore, you know, and die and do all of the things that people do in real life. And so [on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997)] we're very, very strict about making sure that things track, that they're presented in the right way. Because, ultimately -- and this is one of the things that I did find out after we had aired, the soap opera, the characters, the interaction between them is really what people respond to more than anything else. And although we came out of it as a sort of monster-of-the-week format, it was clear that the interaction was the thing that people were latching onto. So we were happy to sort of go with that and really play it up and really see where these characters were going to go." [NPR Fresh Air, 8 November 2002]

[about tearful emotions while filming the last episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" :] "The last scene that I filmed [involved] a one-day player with no lines, which is great. I actually said, 'I want the last scene to be a one-day player with no lines, so I don't lose it.'" [The New York Post, May 20, 2003]

"Joss likes those old movie serials." -- Marti Noxon, about Whedon's cliffhanger endings to episodes [January 26, 2003]

"The times are chaotic. For me, I would hope that people look at ["Angel" (1999/I)] and gain strength by it. With everything that I do, I hope that they see people struggling to live decent, moral lives in a completely chaotic world. They see how hard it is, how often they fail, and how they get up and keep trying. That, to me, is the most important message I'm ever going to tell." [The Vancouver Sun, February 3, 2004]

[after The WB channel canceled the series, causing hurt feelings among the cast and crew -- hurt which was dramatized in the finale] "We put a lot of that heartbreak into the script, into the show, so it would hurt as much to watch as it did to have it taken away from us. I would not have been as brutal about the ending -- had we had another season." (May 10, 2004)

[about his "Buffy" and "Angel" TV shows] "Redemption is something you have to fight for in a very personal, down-dirty way. Some of our characters lose that, some stray from that, and some regain it." (May 13, 2004)

ANGELDOVE

These are two of my favs, that haven't been mentioned:

"If I had created reality television I would have had a much greater influence, but then I would have had to KILL MYSELF."

"I set out in television with one simple goal: to purchase a russian bride. Didn’t work out. Immigration stuff -- it’s complicated."

And this is just an interesting note from an interview:

MSN: Buffy's tombstone read "She saved the world -- a lot." What do you want on yours?
JW: You know, I've been thinking about this since I was, like, 11, which is not surprising for me. And it's changed a lot. Right now? I would want it to say that I was still learning.

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn." --Joss

HEB

Hey,

I don't know whether any of these are of any help to you. I've been looking for similiar things myself as I've been thinking about making a 'The Philosophy of Joss Whedon' poster for my room which would be more geared to his views on the universe and stuff rather than how to live life. So anyway here's a few quotes I found that may or may not be suitable:

‘last – it’s like first only it comes later’

'I’m not a control freak – I’m a control enthusiast' (maybe you could make it something like 'don't be a control freak, be a control enthusiast')

I'm not an adult! I don't want to create responsible shows with lawyers in them. I want to invade people's dreams." - Joss Whedon

"I'm like an addict. I can't go a season on a show without an apocalypse. There probably would have been one on Firefly."

'seize the moment because tomorrow you might be dead'

'if nothing we do matters then all that matters is what we do'

MANTICHORUS

(On Serenity): "It's a crazy-quilt of infotainment that like to call a 'film', and it just may be the best one ever made. Or one of the ones in the middle. Probably not the worst... I'm thinking middle. High middle. So buckle up and get ready for that patented Joss Whedon "high-middle" excitment. It's on its way."

And another, from SFX, regarding the shift from firefly to Serenity:
"I will always mourn the show. This movie may be a beautiful butterfly, but I loved that damn caterpillar."

Zoë Warren: "At last, we can retire and give up this life of crime." (after breaking into a practically empty bank safe, from the Serenity trailer.)

THESOMNAMBULIST

One quote from Joss that always makes me laugh is on the directors commentary for Buffy season two when he says's:
"Besides, killing extras.... Funny every time!"

and then some dood gets frazzled by the judge as he says it. Cracks me up. I'm laughing now.

CORNCOBB

An old issue of SFX provided me with a whole list of Joss qoutes and I've picked a couple out of an interview so, without further ado:

"I truly believe that in years to come, people will look back and say, 'That was a show that was on TV.' Yessir. I truly do."

"Sweet muscular Jesus, I never thought I'd get through it."

"Well you know vampires aren't real: I have that to fall back on. If vampires couldn't have erections, our show (Buffy) would have been 12 episodes long."

"We're easing back on the goats. There've been complaints."

"Cardigans, cardigans, cardigans."

"I don't watch pornography. I just write it."

"I do see an end in sight... it's called a massive coronary."

"I can see the headlines now: 'Joss Whedon in pissed as fart shocker'."

"Praise. You get lots of praise. Eventually you begin to think, 'I INVENTED TELEVISION!' and 'Why doesn't my wife think I'm cooler?"

Re: Nathan Fillion and Gina Torres on Buffy and Angel: "I was worried it seemed too incestuous."

"I do not support our president's actions in pretty much anything he does."

Hope that helps

"Gorramit Mal... I've forgotten my line."
