BADGERSHAT

Not a Firefly related topic, but important.

For those of you who are not aware, there was a shooting in Ohio last night at a Damageplan concert. In total, 5 people were killed, including the gunman, and Darryl "Dimebag" Abbot, the band's guitar player.

Damageplan was formed recently by Dime and his brother Vinnie, who were the founding members of the metal supergroup Pantera. An absolutely spectacular guitarist, and, in general, a really cool guy, despite his substance issues.

The story is still vague, but apparently someone went up on stage, shouted something about the breakup of Pantera (lots of bad blood between the Abbot brothers and former Pantera singer Phil Anselmo), and opened fire, hitting Dime and one other member of the band, plus two audience members. A second member of the band was also reportedly killed, but the identity has not been released of that second member.

Senseless, absolutely senseless.

When did music become such a catalyst for violence? Rap has been under scrutiny for some time now, because of the large amount of rap music related violence--much of it completely assinine, having to do with whose lyrics are better, or other unimportant issues relating to "street cred" and such. Now metal has tragedy, apparently over the breakup of a band (which happened almost three years ago).

What's next? Country/Western assassinations over the size of pickup truck engines?

I don't get it, I really don't.

MALICIOUS

Jefe,

The US is the most violence-ridden country in the verse. Look at the school and work place shootings. Look at the serial killers, look at the senseless street shootings daily. People need to chill and be more like us Firefly fans. It. Just. Sucks.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not trying to be disrespectful or inconsiderate, but shouldn't this thread be in Real World or Talk Story?

I Live in Columbus, where this happened.
according to the news reports, about 40 seconds into Damageplan's set, the shooter forced his way through the back door of the club, past the security guard, came on stage from stage left, and shot dimebag from about 15 feet away, then again at point blank. He then apparently shot another band member ( i forget who),and then anyone who tried to stop him, at one point stopping to re-load his pistol. in all around 20 rounds were fired in the club, which had about 400 people there to see the show. A Police officer who was in the area when the 911 calls went out( from people in the audience) was on the scene within 2 minutes, and shot the shooter dead. in all 7 people were shot, 5 dead including the shooter. He has been identified as Nathan Gale, a seemingly normal guy, who worked landscaping, and played Semi- pro Football for the Lima(OH) Thunder. People who had talked to him in recent days said he was acting completely normal, and was talking about plans for the next few weeks and next year's football season. According to the Columbus Police department:
" We may never know why he did this "
