Okay, I'm bored out of my mind and this ran through my head. The 'verse is about to explode. (Don't ask how or why or say it's impossible, this is just one of those silly 'what if' scenarios)You only have enough time to save 3 out of the 9 characters of whom you will have to restart society with. Who do you save and why?

Personally, I'd save Simon because its good to have a doc around. Especially seeing how every other doctor would be wiped out of the 'verse. I'd save Kaylee because she can find something positive about the 'verse exploding and make us feel not so down in the dumps. Last, I'd choose Mal because he's hot and we are gonna have to reproduce to get society growing again, so why not him? We'd make beautiful babies.

You had better be hotter than Kaylee as she has already expressed a preference for Mal "I Love my Captain"

It depends on your point of view and sexual orientation - did someone say sex? I`m jus` sayin`

I think, I would worry too much about Jayne being there no matter what, although if there was no money & no guns, I don`t know how he would react - probably not very nicely

Shepherd Book would be another to avoid if you didn`t want to be preached to all the time - but you could probably learn a lot more about his background & past history

River - hmmm, difficult one, but if she knew I had to pick 3 and I knew that she knew, then she would have to come along: quote - "Also I can kill you with her brain"

Simon - If River doesn`t go then maybe Simon would be more than a little upset, although having somebody along who is a genius helps

Kaylee - I think with all her energy & feelings, she would be great to come along, but again maybe be full of sorrow for all those lost people.

Wash - Someone who could keep the mood light - although how he would react if Zoe weren`t there, I don`t know.

Inara - well, she has a way with both men & women, making them feel at ease & releasing tension, get`s my vote.

Zoe - If you have Wash along, you could certainly say that they should remain the happy couple and be quite productive, on her own, I think she is a survivor (the only member of her original squad to survive the battle of Serenity)

& Mal - I think he would be quite happy as long he doesn`t have to be in any one place for any length of time unless it was truely a beautiful place with Inara.

So I guess, my 3 would probably be - Kaylee, Wash & Inara - They are the easy going threesome who I think would get along well & maybe with myself & there would be 2 males & 2 females to even the balance.

Now, have I gone into this too much?

Darin (Zol.)

I'm a guy and if I was looking to restart society, there should be three women to maximise our chances. Kaylee, obviously. Inara would be good too. But my third choice... hmmm. River or Zoe?

I guess River, as Zoe's happily married and wouldn't be unfaithful to Wash. Plus if I had chosen Zoe, she could kill me with her mind.

First on the list has to be Mal, because he's the one that will survive no matter what happens...

And then after that I'd go for Wash and Zoe... not sure why, just instinct.

For me it would have to be the following:

Simon: Gotta have a doctor around to pass on medical knowledge to future generations and save it from having to all be relearnt, also to fix up any injuries resulting from the 'verse explosion.

Kaylee: As above, but with knowledge of mechanical engineering (plus she gets extra points for cuteness and positive attitude).

Mal: He's a good all rounder, smart, cunning, good with weapons, basically a good guy to have on your side.

My reasons for not choosing the others are:

I'm not sure that you could have Zoe without Wash or vice-versa, and at least they'd be dying together. Plus not much call for a pilot if the 'verse has exploded (presumably taking everywhere worth flying to with it), and Mal's as good a fighter as Zoe.

Jayne is good at fighting but not really all that much else, you also want someone you can trust when you're the last survivors of the universe.

Book is all very well, but because of his vows he can't help to rebuild the gene pool. Plus I'm not all that big on religion myself.

River's a tricky one, I doubt Simon would want to live without her, but she's a little too crazy and unpredictable to rely on when rebuilding the human race. If she's such a genius she'll be able to save herself anyway .

As for Inara, I'm not sure there'd be much place for soemone from high-society in a world where it's back to basics and practical skills are more important than ettiquete. Not saying that a companion ain't skilled, but not with the kind of talents you'd need to rebuild humanity.

Only problem with my selection is that of course poor l'il Kaylee has 3 men fighting over her. Obviously, to introduce as much variety into the gene pool as possible, we'd all have to take our turns .

Kaylee: "No call to be snappy, Jayne."
Jayne: "Are *you* about to jump onto a moving train?!"

4 people total? Yikes. Humanity is lost. That's a lot of inbreeding. I'd forfeit my spot for Jayne, and let him have choice of the willing. Because if it's the end of the 'verse as we know it, I'd rather shuffle off. Jayne for genetic purposes. Jayne's the biggest and toughest, most survivability. Zoe, Inara, and River would probably be the best bet. River would carry the intelligence, molding a new humanity with pseudo-psychic abilities and vast intelligence. Zoe would bring in more strength and toughness with a large heaping dose of agility. Inara would be the better choice than Kaylee. That much death and loss? She wouldn't be able to handle it. Inara would be able to teach the remnants of humanity diplomacy, empathy, understanding and the like.

But still. Only four people. It wouldn't take many generations before it turned ugly, even with careful breeding.

You never know. River's a genious. Maybe she'd find another populated 'verse for them to live in or maybe she'd discover a way to create new humans. I'd say with her, anything's possible.

Y'know, I hate to be a sh*t about all this, but given the minimum numbers required for minimal genetic diversity, well, 4 ain't near enough. Given that, I'd need Inara, and about 1,100 of her Companion sisters, just to have a chance of making a realistic go of continuing the human race.

And you, of course, Kaysky! And about 1000 friends of yours....

Hmm...I don't think I know 1000 whores. And besides if it's just you and 2002 women... I just don't think any man has that kind of stamina. It'd be fun to find out though. I'll still bring Simon and Mal. They can give you a break when you need it.

ooh, well the 'verse is about to cease to exist and we're somehow going to survive..okay.

*twg decides to use Cozen's reasoning of needing more than four people*

Simon, Mal, Inara, twg...and I would need all the men and women of FFF to join me. There are just soooo many intriguing men and women here that I think would be very useful in repopulating the earth. Okay, I'm just looking for a reason to get Static out of the clubhouse.

Well I'm a guy but we need Simon 'cause he's a doctor. So the other two better be women. Zoe because she's a smart, capable leader type and Kaylee because of her mechanical, practical smarts. Also a personality like hers would be helpful. Although the human race would be better off if I were replaced by Mal...or Book...or Wash...or maybe even Jayne.

Freudian slip?

Anyway I would take Kaylee, Inara and Mal.

Kaylee - cause there have to be women to reproduce with and being unwed I wouldn't mind taking her in a manly fashion.

Mal - cause he's a survivor and good leader. If any of the crew could find their way through the apocalypse my bet is on Mal.

Inara - cause she's the expert on the act of breeding and we're gonna need that to start the human race over again. That or just for a fun way to pass the time

Actually it is my understanding that inbreeding wouldn't be a problem if each generation produces a lot of kids but only lets the ones with the best qualities reproduce. As I understand it is only inbreeding with small amounts of children or a lack of selection that makes inbreeding bad.

Of course you’d need to make sure that the kids didn’t know it was icky to sleep with the family. And it would be brutal on the women, if even possible. (How many kids can they produce?)

Well for purposes of society I’d have to say Kaylee, River and Book. Kaylee’s innocence, Book’s faith, and River’s intelligence could do a lot towards creating a good society.

The problem I foresee is that if Book isn’t the breeding sort of man of the cloth that would mean that all children would share my genetics.

That is a scary thought. On the other hand making that happen sounds good.
