I thought I'd start a thread to discuss random and varied Firefly related creative projects. What are all you guys making at the moment?

For myself I have a few projects in mind for this summer, which I'll fill you in on in due course. I'd like to start off by asking for some advice. I recently bought an 8x10 inch canvas art print of Serenity from e-bay (sucked in by the low price and clobbered by the postage!):

But it didn't turn out as 'arty' as I was expecting. In fact it looks a little dull (its just an inkjet image printed onto thin canvas, not originally drawn or anything) and now I'm stuck with what to do with it. I could get some nice gold and silver pens and collect autographs on it at cons, but if anyone has a more original idea for what to turn it into I'd love to hear it.

I would love to say that I am a creative artsy person. But I have NO PATIENCE. Started a hook rug when I was 12, still unfinished.

Have a book that I started whilst in the UK. It is a romance, anyway Penguin Books was quite interested in it - it still sits unfinished in me PC.

Took me 6 months to embroider a small runner for a chest of drawers, and have an enitre house that needs trim painting inside. Just have no patience. I greatly admire anyone that does anything creative.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Get it signed, frame it, and hang it in front of your door.
Make copies of it and hang them all over town.
Post a larger version so us photoshoppers can use the pretties
Lock it in a vault, just in case it's worth something.
Hang it in an art gallery.

Ok, running out of stuff now....

Hey, guess what? I made a Browncoat!
Sorry, had to do it...

I agree with PR...take it to cons and get it signed. That would be very shiny! And then lock it in a vault, 'cause all the BDH's signatures will be worth their weight in platinum one day...

I still want to make a soft sculpture (pillow) of Serenity (the ship)...
I'll buy different sized pillows and pillow forms,
sew them together into the shape of the ship, and then cover the outside with metalic fabric...
maybe embroider the pilot(s) face & some of the crew in that front 'window'
and of course embroider on the name Serenity

But I've gotten sidetracked by wanting to put together costumes for the Browncoats Ball and FlanventionII

Make sure you use silver lamé; most other metallic fabric is very scratchy!
And post pictures when you finally get it done! I wanna see it!

I was thinking about sewing it onto a bag or something but it might rub off with use. You're probably right that it would look better with wonderful siggies on it (I think I'm unsatisfied because the printing makes 'the black' look a bit grey. Never mind)

Onto my next project - cross stitch! MPhillips has kindly given me permission to make a throw pillow from one of his drawings. I've drawn up an embroidery chart and here's what it should hopefully look like when it's done:

Should be about 10 by 12 cm, and take me approximately 2 or 3 weeks it I stick with it every evening!

Sewing? Gah! I suck at any kind of handicrafts. But I am descended from Hugenot(sic?) cabinet makers and am actually quite good at woodwork.

Writing is my thing - I saw something posted a while ago about a cross-fic challenge, but I can't find the the thread with the details. I have something nicely cracktastic brewing.

I'd like to be a bit more 'hands-on' creative, maybe print some t-shirts.

Alternatively, mebbe some 'Verse-style recipes...

I've been making shirts, ever since i realized that i wasn't going to stop wanting them, and they weren't getting any cheaper. cardboard stencils cut out w/ an exacto knife, then fabric paint onto shirt. not too hard, but quite time-consuming (the making of the stencils that is)

Do you have piccies of any of these shirts? I'd love to see!

Oh and Embers, that sounds like such a fun and original project! I wants me a squidgy Serenity!

I'm also planning another project. My Serenity model is winging it's way to me as we speak:

I plan on making a mold of it and casting it in clear resin (looks like crystal). I might make one in mock bronze as well. Plus I can make Serenity candles with the mold! Shiny!

I'm working two jobs at the moment - teaching english as a foreign language to a bunch of hyper italians in the morning, and computers in the evenings, so all my creative projects have ground to a halt!

I wrote a Jayne version of "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" (I am the Very Model of a Modern Minor Criminal) and hope to write other silly songs like that at some point. I'd also like to write a post-Serenity comic which the talented people here would be welcome to draw, but I have no idea ~how~ to write comics, so that's something I'm checking out. I mean, with screenplay I have an idea how it's structured, but comic scripts? Not a clue! Any advice from those in the know?

On the handicraft side, I'm knitting a cuddly Spike (the Buffy character) as a birthday gift for a friend. And Geekmafia is soooo going to tease me like crazy when he finds out. This is the part where I mention that I'm woeful at any arts and crafts stuff. I'm determained to give it a go, though.

Oh yeah, I'm making my first trembling forays into the world of animated gifs.

Comics you can write out in almost a script form, but with a description for background...

Example; Panel 1 Exterior shot of a small church, on what is clearly a frontier planet. Keep it dusty, a little rustic. Mix of transport out front, horses and jetcars (like Burgess' only not as smart) Speech bubble over, text as follows "And so I say to you..."

Panel 2 Interior shot of same church, viewpoint is speaker, unseen except for edge of hand in shot (this is Book, so colour appropriately) Folk are in their Sunday best - think 19th c frontier. Text "Our lives, from..."

That sort of thing. You need an artist you can trust with the vision. Alan Moore does great comic scripts, with a lot of bizarre asides. You want something really rich and complex, too, check out Neil Gaiman.

All my creativity is tied up in the Serenity Crossover Story project.

(Could really use help gettin the word out, gang!)

My artistic talent is near zero, but I was inspired by the new faux Serenity sequel trailer that was posted today and am now eager to try my hand at some video editing.

That was priceless! A sort of spoof comic book if you will! But with a great message to get people to write funny, funny fluff!

The idea of a Jayne/ Arogorn slash is just insane! And yet...

I'm currently working on trying to finish my From Under The Cork Tree fanfic challenge. I have 'Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner' and 'Sugar, We're Going Down' left to write. And I'm trying to write a short ficlet that's a Firefly/Sin City crossover for the crossover challenge.

I've also got a River fanmix to finish. I'm actually done with compiling the songs, but I have to do the cover art(or ask my friend Edge to do it like she did for my last fanmix)

I'm hard at work on a fanfic. It's my first one of any kind, and I really like the story idea. Without giving it away, one character in one FF episode has a throwaway bit that suggests this entire story. Don't want to say more than that, because I love to write and I'm pretty good at it, so I'm going to spend as much time as necessary to make this a very high-quality piece, and I don't want anyone hijacking the idea and pumping out some quickie thing that doesn't do it justice. (Of course, it may have been done before, but there are just too many fanfics in too many places for me to know for sure. However, I did do some searching and couldn't locate anything that seemed similar - or even close - so I don't think it's been done.)

So far I've written about 20 pages of ideas, research, outlines, and story bits that add up to about one page of actual story, and that amounting to about half of what would be the teaser (the bit before the opening credits) of an episode of the show. BTW, I'm also simultaneously writing it as a script, though that's just a tool to make the story better (by reducing things to essentials it helps keep the work focused).

Shiny! Can't wait to read it.

You know it occurs to me that we have a very wide range of talents on this site. It would be great if we could network to produce more stuff.

For example the comic book idea is pure gold. We could also get poets and musicians together to write some songs.

I want to hear more from the arts and crafts side, and how we can form our own little community.

Just make sure you put your whole thing out swiftly, then - seen too many ideas, some of them my own, hijacked partway through by hamfisted morons. ( translation; people with no original creativity and a very poor grasp of characterization, and an inability to construct a plot arc, or even a gorram sentence...)

Oops. Troll much. Sorry.

In terms of creative things I've been doing, I hope everyone has seen my banners
I love photoshop art; can't draw, but I can cut, paste, and blend like nobody's business!
There is a lot of talent here. Tritan can make some great costumes, there's some wonderful artists and writers, some just plain creativity... How can we turn this to dollars? More importantly, how can we turn it to promotion for our favorite 'verse?

Well I plan on finishing that cross stitch, getting Morena to sign it this September and then offering it for auction for Equality now. If it turns out well.

I do have the idea that those Serenity candloes I was talking about would be fairly marketable. I still have to think some more though. If I put the wick in the glowy tail she's have to constantly be doing a nose dive! Ah well, I'll post when I get them done.

I'm also planning on making a Zoe vest. Again, if it comes out well I'd be happy to make more for other people but we'll have to see if my leather sewing skills are up to the job!

None of mine will see the light of day until it's finished, so I'm not too worried about anyone "borrowing" any of my ideas.

I know what you mean about fanfics - the quality varies just about infinitely. But the vast majority of authors aren't claiming that they're producing great literature, so I don't worry about it. They are what they are, and I either like 'em or I don't. Anyway, mine's only intended to satisfy me - though the bar I set for myself is relatively high.

Bump because I waqnt to hear those weird and whacky ideas for the verse.
See, even Joss has some interesting notions:

"What next? Interesting question. I see an epic Serenity adventure told in woodcuts, then a Jayne/Wesley crossover done in a series of haiku left in small wooden bowls to float down the Seine... Finally an interpretive dance (ya GOTTA have an interpretive dance!) about Mal's personal hygene that becomes an opera/ miniseries starring Sean Bean as "Odor".

That's just one man's vision."

And a fine vision is it too!
