Approximately 7000+ items in the BSR were affected by someone in China who thought that they could spread a trojan through FFF.NET's BSR.

Normally, this isn't too big of a deal since we can restore from backups that are performed daily and maybe at most lose a day of stuff, unfortunately the people who are responsible for backing up the site didn't do their jobs properly and did not notice that the backups were bad.

The sysadmins are attempting to restore as much of the data as possible, but at this point it doesn't look good.

As it stands now, FFF.NET only has BSR content up to May of 2006. Everything from then till now is most likely lost unless the sysadmins can find a recent good backup.

You have no idea how badly I feel right now about this. I wish there was something more I can do at the moment, but there isn't since it's out of my hands. The only thing I can do is wait and hope that a good backup will show up.

:(

7000+?? Be better for the Chinese hundan to stay outta my radar or...Well, as for the backups, I hope they would find something and maybe try to be more careful with the job from now on and special good luck for the sysadmins who are trying to save us from this 'cause...damn, May'06 - it's been a while. Hopefully everything will turn out shiny and don't you feel sorry for this none, it wasn't your fault :) Indeed, thanks replying this humble thread :)

YEESH!

I just looked at my stuff the other day, and thought about saving it... I upload stuff and then delete the working copies. gonna hafta look real hard, and see what copies of work in progress I kept.

Haken, Please keep us updated on what the sysadmins find, or when they give up, maybe we can re load much of the stuff we put up...

So, we're popular enough to be a target. :crap: :censored: Hopefully things with the backups will work out. I think I probably have bookmarked quite a few stories from that time period; and haven't read them yet.

Just one more reason for me to quit procrastinating and read faster.

I don't know if it will help any, but the wayback machine at archive.org seems to have up to the middle of July available. I'm not sure if they could be restored from there, but they would still be available. I could stand to hear a little more.

Well, I lost all my stuff - Of a Thousand and The Endless Road - though I don't think anyone was reading them.

I can't see where you are at fault here, though I can understand you feeling badly. For myself, I appreciate everything you've done. I've only been here a few months, but it's a great site, and hackers happen. THanks for everything!

Well, . There's always someone who has to bollocks up a good thing for :censored: and giggles, isn't there?! Hackers. :finger: 'Nuff said.

Something similar happened at an MB I belonged to several years ago, and I'd seriously suggest anyone who lost work here to ask around here and see if anyone has a copy, just in case. I'd have lost three years' worth of work in that particular situation if someone hadn't downloaded/saved copies of some of the pieces I'd posted there. As it was, I spent over a year recreating an entire novel-length fanfic I'd deleted from my system after posting, from the few notes and hard copy scraps I had kept--but at least I didn't have to start over with everything. So, seriously--ask around.

Regardless, my heart stands beside everybody who is experiencing that shock, loss and grief right now. Losing something *you created* out of sincere inspiration and a chunk of yourself about a subject you care about is a terrible, terrible blow, and I am sorry for your losses. :( :( :(

Maybe the next step in the face of tragedy is :finger: defiance: Anyone planning to repost what was saved, or are folks waiting to see what was salvageable from the back-ups?

Viva la BSR!!!

I've got my fics saved in other locations so I'm not as upset with that as I am in loosing all the great feedback.

I won't be reposting my stuff here. People can read it at fanfiction.net.

Do an advanced google search, with the site cache:fireflyfans.net. For you LeiaSky:

Don't click the main links, but the little *cached* link underneath the page description. For example, here's one of your chapters, feedback and all:
