Well, I had rationed out watching my last episode or two for my first watch-through of the series, trying to stretch out Firefly as much as I could.

I have a problem though. As of tonight, the episodes are "over" for me, and I'm heartbroken. I know, I can go back and watch the commentaries and buy some other stuff, but you here all know what I mean. Seeing all the visual poetry in OiS kinda made me get poetical (AMAZING episode! I was with the crew; I didn't ever GET River until now, but... [insert incredulous Mandarin here] Ok, I'm there.)

Annnnyway. I haven't written fan fiction in years, and I don't quite consider what follows as a fanfic (more, a fan's reaction). But inspired by River-ness on the episode, blended with with Mal-isms, I kinda got poetical about bidding goodbye to Firefly maidenhood but saying hello to the whole 'verse ahead. :) Sorry if this isn't the right forum; I'm new-ish still.

Heh, what follows is kinda angsty.

Everybody dies alone?

A small part of me died tonight, and though I am not alone I felt it.

I looked alone, did not feel crowded (that can come later—tomorrow’s crowded). Just trying to get by, trying to keep food on the table and fuel in the tanks. Is that my destiny?

I stand aside on the shore, watching the other children play and watching some who have stopped to rest.

Some of the children walk in awe, dreaming of what might have been and what still could be, sharing those secret dreams in hushed voices, giving the dreams a voice. Some of them chase each other shouting; in their play they seem angry but the love for each other is there.

The day is dry in some ways, even beside the black, waters stretching wide with possibility.

Some of the children have grown weary of the play; watching as a new ones arrive full of energy and good intentions, the weary ones grow unhappy, frustrated at watching the new play, wishing for some of that energy, and hating that it is vanity and will lead to naught. They play a little, push small lines in the sand and pick at blades of grass, too tired to swing sticks and chase the wind.

I stand aside though, and even if understanding, I do not comprehend.

A few children are timid for a little while. They arrived late, for so long not knowing there was such play, not knowing such kind of joy or such sweet sorrow could exist. But they suspected, somehow they knew to search, that the children would be there waiting, or so they hoped.

Many of the young ones welcome the newcomers, offering them brown play clothes and specimens of mud and fresh, fresh drink.

Quietly, timidly, but with firm determination the newcomers approach, and find their hopes have not been disappointed. The new ones find family—regardless of what came before, even if nothing much comes after, they have the now, the present, and O such a present!

So the children come and go, visiting, joking, sharing, weeping, dreaming, knowing.

And for now it is enough; it is serenity.

You can also watch the episodes over again and again, and in doing so you'll probably see new details every time. I own two copies of Firefly, and I watch them, but lately I just watch firefly from hulu.com to keep the series popular over there.
