Hey there everyone! Was going to use Book's line from the pilot (btw - this is going to get confusing with both the pilot and the movie called Serenity...) about being out of the world for a while but I've been watching The Message instead and want to post this now before I forget (believe me, new baby equals sleep deprivation equals short-term memory loss)

Anyway, back to the point. I haven't been around these parts for a while, but now Offspring's starting to sleep a little longer at night, I'm getting my brain back and am starting to do some writing.

One thing I can't get my head round though is how the Inara leaving the ship story will play out. I haven't read all the stories on here, but I expect there's one that I'll read and decide, 'yes that's what happened'

So, the question is this, do you guys have any problem with me incorporating your plots into my own canon for Firefly, so that I can weave them into my own stories?

Didn't want to tread on anyone's toes my first go - so figured best to ask!

thanks, Barney

In the, oh, four whole minutes since writing this, I'm worried that maybe I haven't explained myself properly (I believe I mentioned the sleep deprivation)

I don't mean I'm going to take your plots and write my own stories using them. I mean I want to include them in a time-line of the past that my stories will build on. So that if you write a story where, say, Kaylee leaves the ship and starts to work for the Alliance and I were to write a story set after that, then Kaylee would no longer be on the ship in my story and she'd be working for the Alliance.

I'm making things more confusing aren't I... time to shut up and make a cup of tea...

I would have thought most fanfic authors would be flattered and delighted if you followed their particular projections of the future.

Feel free to use anything of mine. It would be interesting to see where someone else can take what I've created.

Shiny!

Obviously same goes for my stuff if I a) ever finish anything and b) have the guts to post it here!

What you're actually talking about here is "fanon"--fan created canon. In some fandoms, things get read and absorbed and sometimes mixed up with what a person saw on a show. Some fannish authors don't mind when others "borrow" or adopt their ideas. Some do. In certain instances, fan writers do collaborate on a "shared universe" kind of thing.

In my experience (going back to pre-Internet zine days) there was always a sort of unspoken rule that you asked first--especially if you wanted to use a new character another fan author had created; or a specific storyline. It's common courtesy. You shouldn't just pick and choose ideas out of various fics, really.

Of course, that's my personal opinion--and I'll say for the record here that I'm very protective of any specific storyline I come up with, and generally don't share my toys with others...it's a matter of preference and experience.

That's a fair view, and 's'why I asked -thanks

Excellent rule. In the absence of a real canon like a series would give (gorram Reavers who run Fox Network go straight to *diyu* for cancelling it) permission should be sought.

And we know not to ask HawkMoth.

I find it interesting that some writers of fanfic feel that permission should be asked to borrow from their stories, when they themselves did not get permission to borrow from Joss Whedon's work.

I don't write fanfic, but i do produce some fan art. And I certainly don't expect anyone to ask my permission to use it. It was created from the love of the show, and given freely to other fans.

Its nice when they do ask, but I never say 'no'.

Well, yes, we're all "guilty" of "textual poaching" (you all should try to find that book, by Henry Jenkins). The whole concept of fanfiction/fanart is still a very gray area in terms of copyrights, borrowing, etc. When you see disclaimers on net fiction ("Firefly and its characters belong to Joss Whedon/Mutant Enemy, and no infringement is intended" or words to that effect) you're seeing a variation on what was used in practically every media fanzine since the old Star Trek days.

But as I said, it's a matter of personal preference, or what a fan writer is used to, when it comes to allowing other fans free rein. I'm operating on almost 30 years of fannish experience. It's kind of hard to explain, but once having "poached" from a TV show, we generally tried to avoid doing it to our fellow fans.

Ah, but some artists mind, as well. Especially when artwork is lifted from a person's web page and used elsewhere, without permission or credit given, and often altered in some way. Same thing with a web page design or layout--there was a huge discussion/argument over on the Universal Serenity Boards about this. Sure, you take the risk with anything you put on the web, to be seen by others, but you hope no one would just take it.

Anyway, not intending to start an argument here or dissauade anyone else from sharing as they choose to, simply trying to explain more of my view on the subject.

Fanon overlap is almost inevitable though--it's certainly possible to subconsciously or inadvertantly use a character or planet name someone else came up with; and it's happened that fan writers come up with similar ideas on their own.

Ah, but one other point: It's also considered proper practice to give credit where credit is due; if you've asked and gotten the OK to use Author A's original character or concept in your own work to make an acknowledgment of such in your author's note or intro.

Just my two cents in that I agree w/ hawkmoth. I don't think that fanfic authors mind for the most part other than hoping that credit is given to their story that started that particular aspect of fanon...much as credit would be given if an author wanted to play w/ another's original character (OC).

It might be interesting to see where someone would take one of my ideas. As long as I got some sort of credit, it wouldn't bother me at all.
